.SYNOPSIS...
The next round of snow moves in this afternoon and evening.
Heavy snow accumulations are expected overnight into Tuesday
across much of the Inland Northwest. The unsettled and cool
pattern will persist through the next week with another organized
storm system possible Thursday night and Friday.

.DISCUSSION...
Tonight and Tuesday:
...Widespread moderate to heavy snow accumulations...
Numerous Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are
in effect. Satellite imagery shows a low just west of Vancouver
Island with a wave digging south down the back side of the low.
As this system digs off the coast the flow will become
southwesterly with a nearly stalled frontal boundary. As this
warmer air overrides the cold air strong isentropic lift will
produce widespread snow. For tonight the highest snowfall rates
will shift from Central and SE Washington early to mid evening
hours into NE Washington and the Idaho Panhandle in the late
evening and overnight hours as the warm front moves northeast.
Expect moderate snow rates to continue in the Cascades. This
boundary lingers over NE WA/N Idaho on Tuesday with additional
accumulations although the highest additional accumulations should
focus over the Idaho Panhandle in the afternoon. Now models show
milder southerly winds surfacing behind the warm front on Tuesday
over SE Washington into the Spokane/Coeur d'Alene area and the
Silver Valley. Current forecast goes for highs in the lower to mid
30s with the Lewiston area warming to near 40F. Models differ
with the degree of warming however with the GFS guidance about 6
degrees warmer compared to the ECMWF guidance. Given the amount of
cold air in place today and the model's tendency to scour out the
cold air too quickly, the forecast leans towards the cooler ECMWF
model. Areas north of Spokane/Coeur d'Alene and westward into
Central Washington will remain below freezing through the day.
*Snow Amounts: The highest totals are expected in the Cascades
with 20 to 30 inches near the Cascade crest, 10 to 15 inches
Plain and Leavenworth areas, and 5 to 10 inches from the Methow
Valley south through Chelan and Wenatchee. The other area of
higher totals runs from the Spokane area northeast into the Idaho
Panhandle with 5 to 10 inches in the valleys and 1 to 2 feet in
the mountains of the Idaho Panhandle. Elsewhere accumulations
will generally run from 2 to 5 inches.
*Wind/Drifting snow: On Tuesday models show winds increasing to 10
to 15 mph with gusts 25-30 mph over the Palouse and West Plains
from Wilbur to Airway Heights. But with the wind comes the milder
temperatures to near or slightly above freezing which should
minimize overall coverage of drifting snow. But still could see
patchy coverage and this has been added to the forecast. But
again not nearly as much expected compared to the last storm. JW
Tuesday night through next Monday...Deep winter will continue
over the inland northwest through the next week with cooler than
normal temperatures and more opportunities for accumulating snow
over the region.
The huge...deep and cold upper level trough visible on satellite
this afternoon in the Gulf of Alaska will eject inland as an
elongated positively tilted wave Tuesday night and Wednesday
morning. What this will do is force the stationary warm front
that will bludgeon the region with heavy snow tonight back to the
south...but it will hang up along a line from roughly Portland to
Mullan Pass and continue to remain as a focus for further
precipitation driving into the Central Panhandle Mountains and
beginning another round of snow after sunset for the beleaguered
Palouse region which will continue well into Wednesday with
another 4 to 6 inches of accumulation on the Washington and Idaho
Palouse...the high terrain around Pomeroy and Alpowa summit...and
the Camas Prairie. The orographically favorable mountains of the
Idaho Panhandle will amass another 10 to 15 inches from this
stalled moist boundary. Most of the warnings and advisories for
these regions (except the Central Panhandle Mountains) will
probably be allowed to expire Tuesday late morning as snow levels
rise in the warm sector with the warm front off to the north. This
is to delineate a break period from accumulating snow in these
areas Tuesday afternoon...but it is likely a new round of
advisories or Winter Storm Warnings will need to be hoisted for
the Tuesday night and Wednesday period in these southeastern
zones.
By Wednesday evening models seem to be in reasonable agreement in
bringing a noticeable break period to the region in the wake of
the passing trough axis with a weak short wave ridge popping up
for Wednesday night through Thursday morning. The evolution of the
inevitable deterioration of this welcome break is the subject of
some model disagreement with the ECMWF bringing a return of active
weather by Thursday afternoon...while the GFS holds off the next
system until Thursday night. In any event models are in good
agreement in plopping another deep and cold upper trough off the
coast which will support another coastal surface low which in turn
will generate another warm front over the forecast area appending
off of the coastal low. Basically the same pattern as tonight's
storm system. So...expect another organized storm system with
another round of widespread accumulating snow across the region on
or about Thursday night and Friday. The difference will be this
next storm will not have a solid and deep Pacific moisture
feed...and with the Arctic air mass of the past few days now
replaced by a more polar maritime air mass expect snow/water
ratios to be less than the dry fluffy 20:1 ratios of recent
storms. Tentatively these elements suggest this Thursday
night/Friday storm will be capable of mountain heavy snow...but
more of a 2 to 4 inch accumulator in the basin zones and possibly
just rain in the L-C valley.
Beyond Friday model agreement begins to break down...but where
there is agreement suggests a slow transit through the region of
the parent upper trough on Saturday with a disturbance laden
northwest flow for Sunday and Monday. This flow will bring a cool
down for the weekend...not arctic but still well below
normal...and opportunities for weak currently poorly resolved
transient storm systems with minor accumulations but so far models
do not advertise any organized or potentially strong storm
systems into early next week. /Fugazzi

LOW IFR CONDITIONS ACROSS THE REGION DUE SNOW THROUGH TONIGHT
A strong warm front is moving in across the Inland Northwest
bringing another round of snow. All TAF sites will see low IFR
conditions with light to moderate snowfall. The warm front will
lift north of KLWS by around midnight with moderate confidence the
the heavier snow will lift north of KPUW around midnight as well.
The snow looks to become hung up between the Spokane/Coeur d'Alene
corridor and the canadian border. There is some uncertainty if the
heaviest snow will sit over KGEG, KSFF and KCOE through Tuesday
afternoon or if these areas will also at least see improving
conditions. All TAF sites, except for KLWS, are expected to see
moderate to heavy snow accumulations and snow consistency will
become wetter and heavier through the morning on Tuesday as
temperatures warm. Low level wind shear will be a concern at KPUW
late tonight with a 50 kt low level jet setting up just west of
the airport. Better mixing by Tuesday morning/afternoon is
expected to result in 20-25 kt wind gusts for KGEG, KSFF, KCOE,
