BY TUESDAY...
This Morning: The tight little low responsible for our heavy snow
last night is quickly moving east. As of 2 AM, the center of the
low was between Ritzville and Colfax. By 7 AM, the low center will
be crossing the Idaho/Montana border with snow mainly limited to
light showers over the Panhandle mountains. There will be a couple
hours of gusty winds across the Palouse this morning...initially
out of the south shifting to the west. Sustained 15 mph winds with
localized gusts to 25 mph will produce drifting of the snow that
fell yesterday and overnight. Fortunately, winds should relax by
mid morning as the surface low quickly moves eastward.
This Afternoon: Portions of central and eastern Washington may
experience some sunshine this afternoon, but the break in the
clouds will be short-lived. Low pressure organizing off the
Washington coast will spread clouds across the Inland Northwest
during the afternoon. By mid to late afternoon, snow will increase
over the Cascades. Wenatchee, Chelan, and Moses Lake will likely
see the return of accumulating snow by 3 or 4 PM.
Tonight into Tuesday: Low pressure organizing off the coast of
Washington will stall overnight and linger through at least
Tuesday night. The snow we received overnight was a quick hitter
with high snowfall rates. The warm frontal snow that will spread
over the region tonight into Tuesday will be a different animal, a
more prolonged event. Look for bands of light to moderate snow
(driven by warm frontal lift) to overspread eastern Washington
and north Idaho this evening. At this time, it looks like the most
significant surge of snow will occur tonight across the entire
region with bands of moderate snow lingering over the northern and
central Idaho Panhandle through Tuesday and possibly Tuesday
night.
Storms involving stalled or slow moving fronts can be brutal to
forecast. The potential for hours and hours of snow can lead to
very high amounts (localized). Some spots in north Idaho could
conceivably receive well over a foot of snow...maybe more by
Wednesday. The latest runs of the ECMWF and NAM don't bring an end
to the snow for the central Idaho Panhandle until Thursday. The
GFS shuts it off Wednesday afternoon. If the GFS verifies, we are
looking at widespread 6 to 12 inches for Kellogg, St Maries, Coeur
d'Alene, Spokane, Sandpoint, Deer Park, and the northern Palouse.
If the ECMWF verifies, we may continue to add a few more inches
to that total Wed night into Thursday. At this time, it looks like
accumulations in the Columbia Basin and Okanogan Valley will be
more modest with the bulk of the snow falling tonight with 2 to 4
inch amounts for Moses Lake, Grand Coulee, Omak, and Republic.

Wednesday through Sunday: Active weather will continue through
the work week and into the weekend. While all the models agree on
weather systems moving through the region, they disagree on
evolution, track of the systems, and timing. It is difficult to
pinpoint a specific dry period, other than maybe Wed night or
early Thursday when the GFS and ECMWF are showing a brief
shortwave ridge building in ahead of the next low pressure system.
(tho the NAM and Canadian would say a big no on that...)
So...trending toward the EC and GFS...it looks like decreasing
snow on Wednesday as the trough exits the region. Then we have a
drier period Wed night into Thur. Late Thur into Friday another
system moves in bringing another round of snow. The trough remains
across the region through the weekend for continued showers,
especially across the mountains and most of north Idaho. The deep
Columbia Basin may remain mostly dry for next weekend.
Temperatures will be well below average for this time of the year.
Highs are expected to be in the mid 20s to around freezing.
Portions of the LC valley have the best shot of going above
freezing. Lows in the teens to lower 20s is expected. There will
be many locations, especially across the north that will see
single digit readings Thursday morning and perhaps again by next

06Z TAFs: A potent shortwave disturbance will move across the region
tonight. A surface low will track eastern WA with a trajectory
between KPUW and KGEG. Snow is expected to be heavy at times
between 08-11Z with VLIFR conditions possible with snowfall rates
near an inch per hour possible. Winds will be breezy at KPUW for the
morning hours with blowing snow possible across the airfield. There
will be a short break in the snow from late Monday morning into
early afternoon, but another round of snow will move in by Monday
evening along a warm front that will slowly shift up across the
region. It is expected to bring the potential for heavy snow by
Tuesday morning. /SVH
