.SYNOPSIS...
Blowing and drifting snow combined with bitterly cold north winds
will make Saturday a potentially dangerous day to travel across
central Washington. Snow accumulations of eight inches or more
from Chelan to Wenatchee to Vantage will be possible. North winds
gusting between 40 and 50 mph in the Columbia Basin will have the
potential to make roads impassable due to drifting snow. Winds
are expected to subside by Sunday with cold temperatures lingering
into next week.

.DISCUSSION...

...POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS WINTER STORM FOR CENTRAL AND NORTH
CENTRAL WASHINGTON ON SATURDAY...

Today: Bands of light snow are expected today across the Palouse
into the central Idaho Panhandle where 1 to 3 inches of
accumulation are expected by this evening. The evening runs of
the GFS, NAM, and ECMWF have shifted this band a little further
south keeping much of Spokane county under an inch of accumulation
today with up to 2 inches for Coeur d'Alene. Bands of snow today
will occur with a shortwave well ahead of the stronger storm
expected to develop over central Washington this evening. Fluffy
accumulations that occur today will have the potential to blow and
drift tomorrow, so we will be monitoring the placement of this
band of light snow over southeast Washington and the central
Panhandle.

Tonight through Saturday Night:

*Snow Amounts: The Wenatchee, Chelan, Leavenworth, Waterville, and
 Priest Rapids areas continue to be the hit the hardest by the
 NAM, SREF, and ECMWF. We are looking for 8 to 12 inches of
 accumulation tonight through Saturday evening for these central
 Washington communities where the models continue to forecast the
 best combination of upper level difluence, strong isentropic
 ascent, and low level easterly upslope flow. The latest model
 runs have decreased snow amounts for north Idaho and northeast
 Washington. Places like Sandpoint, Coeur d'Alene, Spokane,
 Colville, and Republic are expected to receive less than 4 inches
 accumulation tonight through Sunday morning. The decrease in
 precipitation amounts appears to be tied to a low track that is
 slightly further west.

*Strong North/Northeast Winds: The northeasterly pressure gradient
 will peak Saturday and remain quite strong through Saturday
 evening leading to sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts of
 40 mph or more for the Okanogan Valley, Waterville Plateau, and
 Upper Columbia Basin. With the prospect of 4 to 8 inches of new
 snow around Omak, Mansfield, Ephrata, Moses Lake, and Priest
 River, blowing and drifting Saturday raises concerns for reduced
 visibility and potential road closures in these wide open areas
 that are susceptible to north/northeast winds. The Highway 95
 corridor between Sandpoint and Post Falls will have the potential
 for gusts in the 40 to 50 mph range as well, but may not have as
 much fresh snow to blow around with 1 to 4 inches in the
 forecast today through Saturday.

*Bitterly Cold Temperatures: Temperatures on Saturday won't warm
 up much with another surge of Arctic air slamming the Inland
 Northwest. High temps on Saturday may not get out of the teens in
 north Idaho and northeast Washington. Daytime wind chills for
 Spokane, Coeur d'Alene, Deer Park, Sandpoint, and Bonners Ferry
 will be in the -5 to -15 degree range Saturday and Saturday
 night.

Sunday through Thursday: The pattern for early next week starts
off very cold as a blocking ridge persists in the Eastern Pacific
with a deep fetch of north-northeast flow out of the arctic into
the Inland NW. 850mb temperatures are progged to be around -15C
Sunday with highs in the teens which is 20 to 25 degrees below
normal. Also keeping temperatures down will be a closed low over
Oregon that ejects northeast into Eastern WA/N Idaho providing
mostly cloudy skies and a chance for light snow. Sunday night may
be the coldest temperatures of the season with the potential for
breaks in the clouds over Eastern WA, decreasing winds, and fresh
snow cover as this wave exits. Some of the raw model guidance has
temperatures near -10F for Winthrop and Republic. Widespread
single digits are likely with pockets of below 0F over Central and
Eastern Washington. North Idaho may hang onto stratus keeping
valley lows above 0F. Monday will be another cold but likely dry
day. For Tuesday through Thursday will be watching systems
dropping in from the north-northwest. This should help moderate
our temperatures to some degree but still well below normal. Most
of the model solutions still take the brunt of the energy from
these waves to either west or south of the area but there has been
enough run to run variability in the details to have much
confidence this far out. JW

.AVIATION...
06Z TAFs: Mid and high level clouds will continue to stream in
from the northwest. TAF sites will start off VFR through much of
the night as clouds gradually thicken and lower. Weak overrunning
precipitation is producing light snow at Bonners Ferry, Sandpoint
and the surrounding mountains. This will sag south overnight with
light snow/flurries spreading into the the KGEG- KCOE corridor
into early Friday morning. Will see an increase of snow across the
TAF sites through the day, in fact the snow looks to become more
pronounced from KPUW to KLWS by 16Z and gradually spreading to
KMWH and KEAT after 21z. As the snow increases, anticipate cloud
decks and visibilities lowering to MVFR with local IFR conditions.
Snow intensities should gradually increase after 00z, especially
from KEAT to KMWH. Winds will remain light through the period,
veering to the north to northeast by Friday evening /rfox.
