.SYNOPSIS...
The weather will remain unsettled but continued through tonight
with valley rain and mountain snow. Accumulations will be light.
Very cold temperatures are expected to arrive early next week as
a cold Canadian air mass invades the region. This will likely
deliver the coldest temperatures of the winter with highs in the
teens and 20s and lows in the single digits. This cold will
persist through most of next week.

.DISCUSSION...
Tonight...Satellite imagery shows three closed lows in the western
U.S./Canada that will dance around the western states tonight.
The Inland northwest is between these system resulting in a mainly
dry westerly flow. But looking closer there is a frontal boundary
stalled over northern Oregon this afternoon. This front will move
back north tonight as a warm front and will increase the chances
across the southeast zones, mainly east of a line from about Walla
Walla north to Priest River. Temperatures and snow levels are
such that precipitation will be mainly as rain with snow above
about 4500 feet. Accumulations of 1-2 inches will be possible. A
bigger forecast challenge will be the location of fog and low
clouds. The boundary layer remains saturated and with clearing
skies through the day fog and stratus developed across the
Columbia Basin, along the Columbia and Spokane rivers and north
into the northern valleys and the Okanogan valley. We may see some
relief through sunset or a little later, but the expectations is
for conditions to deteriorate again through the evening. Tobin
Sunday through Tuesday. Punxsutawney may be predicting an early spring
but old man winter won't be going away any time soon here in the
Inland NW. Sunday and Monday will feature the exchange of air
masses from maritime to a modified Arctic bringing with it a
threat for snow then cold and drier continental air mass which
will likely produce our coldest string of temperatures so far this
winter.
2PM surface observations across southwestern Canada from the Fraser
Plateau in Central BC to Lethbridge and Calgary in southern
Alberta indicate temperatures in the single digits to below zero.
Further upstream over the northern BC Coastline, water vapor
reveals a developing low pressure system. This system is forecast
by all guidance to continue to deepen and dig down the Pac NW
Coastline over the next 24-36 hours. The low reaches Vancouver
Island Sunday then N CA offshore waters Monday afternoon. This
particular track of the low will allow that colder continental air
mass to seep in from the north and east while 700-500mb flow
becomes increasing south to southwest. As such, the pool of
moisture over Oregon will buckle back to the north bringing
precipitation back into the region. As the Arctic boundary
undercuts this moisture, the mix of rain and mountain snow will
switch back to all snow and for most elevations. This will occur
at different timing intervals from north to south starting roughly
Sunday morning through Sunday evening.
Confidence is high that the heaviest QPF will fall south of a line
from Prichard to Pullman to La Crosse due to an earlier intrusion
of drier continental air into NE WA, far N ID, and Central WA. So
despite these northern communities carrying a longer threat for
snow as the p-type, amounts should be lighter given the drying as
amounts have been shaved back closer to the 1-2 inch range but
some guidance suggest some areas may be around an inch or less.
Into SE WA and portions of the ID Panhandle mainly south of
I-90...precipitation is looking to linger well into Monday with
the potential for smaller waves bringing snow showers well into
Tuesday. It has been challenging trying to determine exactly when
p-type will switch to snow for the Palouse, valleys spread within
the Central Panhandle Mountains and southward into the L-C Valley
and Camas Prairie. NAM remains very quick bringing the cold air
southward and is an outlier vs the GFS/EC which were generally
preferred. This would suggest rain switching to snow Sunday late
afternoon and evening for much of the US95/Hwy 195 corridor...and
even a few hours later into the evening around the L-C Valley.
Snowfall amounts will have the potential to be more in the 2-4
inch range with higher amounts in Shoshone County and on the Camas
Prairie. Winter weather advisories and warnings were issued for
these areas.
Snowfall amounts for much of Central WA look be lower generally less
than inch increasing toward 2-3 inches around Stevens Pass and
Mission Ridge. Some guidance suggest a second band around
Wenatchee and Waterville which push amounts sightly higher but
confidence is low. No highlights are planned for these areas but
we will continue to monitor trends as this event unfolds for
potential changes.
This transition of air masses will also bring gusty north and
northeast winds. The strongest winds will squeeze down the
Okanogan Valley, Purcell Trench, and spread across the open
Columbia Basin. Sustained winds of 15 to 30 mph will be possible
with gusts in the 30-40 mph range. This will create brisk wind
chill readings in the single digits to even below zero. For Monday
and Tuesday, afternoon highs will struggle to warm out of the 20s
with lows in the teens to single digits. Sheltered northern
valleys with fresh snow will stand a good shot for temperatures
below zero. /sb
Wednesday through Saturday...Model guidance has been struggling with
the extended and the ECMWF really seems out of sorts, so this
forecast leans toward a GFS/Canadian/Ensemble hybrid. High
pressure will be over the Pac NW Wednesday and Thursday with
northwest flow across. Wednesday through mid-day Thursday should
be dry, but still very chilly. From Thursday afternoon through
Saturday there will be several transient storm system moving
through the region. For now it is difficult to pin down the timing
of each wave, but expect increasing chances for precipitation
each day. Temperatures will slowly rebound through the end of the
week, but remain well below normal and any precipitation will be

18Z TAFS: Light precipitaiton from overnight has pushed out of the
region this morning leaving a saturated boundary layer across the
region. Light south-southwest winds will pile that moisture up
against the northern mountains. This will keep fog/stratus in the
TAF for KGEG/KSFF/KCOE/KPUW/KMWH resulting in IFR/LIFR cigs/vsby.
Guidance is showing some improvement, but confidence for
improvement in this pattern is low mainly for KGEG/KSFF and KMWH.
KEAT is trying to mix out and expect fluctuating cigs/vsby through
19020z before they stay VFR. The weak cold front will stall
across extreme northern Oregon through the day then shift back to
the north this evening. This will bring another shot of light -ra
to KLWS/KPUW and possibly as far north as the KGEG/KSFF/KCOE
corridor after 06z. KEAT/KMWH will remain dry with low stratus and
