.SYNOPSIS...
A strong weather system will bring moderate to heavy snow
accumulations today and tonight along the East Slopes of the
Cascades as well as most of Eastern Washington and north Idaho.
Central Washington will see much lighter amounts with little to no
snow accumulation for the deep basin and Lewiston area. The
system will also bring a potential for high winds in the
Cascades... Waterville Plateau... and western reaches of the
Columbia Basin. Expect dry weather with occasional fog and
seasonable temperatures from Thursday through the weekend.

.DISCUSSION...
Today through Wednesday: Our weak, transitory upper ridge has
shifted eastward as the next Pacific storm system approaches. Its
associated cirrus shield has already spread across the region. A
low stratus deck continues to blanket portions of far eastern WA
and northern ID, but with these high clouds moving overhead, it
appears unlikely for denser fog to form this morning.
Light, warm frontal precipitation has begun to spread inland
along the Washington coast as of this writing. Hi-resolution
models show this precipitation spreading across the Cascades later
this morning, reaching eastern WA this afternoon and northern ID
by this evening. This shortwave is quite robust, and guidance
suggests that most locations will start off as snow with this
system, with the exception of the lower Columbia Basin and near
Lewiston. Given the relatively cold lower atmosphere and strong
moisture tap, a widespread snow event appears likely with this
storm. Warmer air along with breezy southwest winds will develop
as the cold front passes late tonight into Wednesday morning, and
some locations may briefly change over to rain. Winter Weather
Advisories and Warnings have been posted across much of the
region. A slight chance of freezing rain will be possible toward
the tail end of this event, particularly along the lower Columbia
Basin, but any accumulation would be minimal. Precipitation will
diminish across eastern WA Wednesday morning, then northern Idaho
toward the afternoon.
Behind the frontal passage, a strong northwesterly jet will take
aim at the Cascades Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. With
dry, stable air likely to move into the region, this pattern bears
some resemblance to prior mountain wave wind events that have
caused localized damage along the east slopes of the Cascades in
the past. A High Wind Watch has been posted for this timeframe for
those locations. Additionally, gusty southwest winds are likely
to develop across portions of the Basin, the Palouse, and into the
Spokane area tonight into Wednesday morning. Dang
Wednesday night through Tuesday: The longwave pressure pattern
will feature high pressure along the west coast. This will result
in drier northerly flow over the Inland Northwest. There will be
times when disturbances will push across through this northerly
flow. Models are fairly consistent with a weak disturbance around
Thursday night or Friday. Then there is the potential for a
stronger disturbance moving down over the weekend. The weaker
disturbance is expected mainly to bring some increasing mid to
high level cloud cover with a chance of light snow or flurries
mainly over the ID Panhandle. The shortwave trough for the weekend
will bring a better chance for precipitaiton with best chances
again expected to be over the ID Panhandle. The pattern would
suggest a better chance for snow as the dominant precip type. I
don't see this as being much of an impact to travel though except
potentially over Lookout Pass. It will depend on how deep this
shortwave becomes and early indications is that impacts will
mostly be over into Montana. Modified Arctic air will try to
squeeze through out of western Canada over the region though. This
may bring a period of brisk northerly winds with colder
temperatures heading into the early portion of next week. The
close proximity of the longwave ridge for mid week into the
weekend will increase large scale subsidence. The boundary layer
will be moist with fog and stratus expected to develop. Air
stagnation will also be a potential concern with western zones in
and near the Cascades seeing the better potential for stagnant

06z TAFs: Boundary layer winds are beginning to shift to the
south and low clouds near Pullman are quickly migrating northward
toward Spokane and Coeur D Alene. With a lack of obs or cams in
this activity, there is some uncertainty how low restrictions will
become when this arrives in the next 1-2 hours. Otherwise....mid
and high clouds are expanding inland as a weak wave tracks into
Wrn WA. This will bring a chance for very light snow across NE WA
and N ID aft 15z then a stronger and wetter system begins to
moisten from top down after 20z...with -sn/sn expected to develop
around 00z and continue through 06z bringing LIFR/IFR conditions
and snow accumulations at the terminals except KLWS. Strong winds
will be possible at KEAT after 06z. /sb
