Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A powerful cold front will bring strong north winds, much cooler
temperatures, and snow to the mountains this weekend. A large
portion of north Idaho and eastern Washington will likely
experience an early freeze with low temperatures in the upper 20s
and low 30s Sunday night, Monday night, and Tuesday night.

.DISCUSSION...

...BLUSTERY NORTH WINDS...UNSEASONABLY COLD TEMPERATURES...AND
MOUNTAIN SNOW THIS WEEKEND...

Today: Upper level low will move south into the Pacific Northwest
later today. This morning will be fairly benign with a slow
increase in clouds. Afternoon temperatures will top out in the mid
50s to lower 60s for most valleys. This is about 5 to 10 degrees
below average...but by Saturday we will fondly remember these
'warmer' temperatures. Rain will develop in the afternoon with the
low moving in. Most models are showing the best chance of showers
remaining across the northern counties of WA and ID. There is
some instability stretching from the Republic area southeast
towards Spokane/COE and to St Maries. Have kept thunder in the
forecast for the afternoon. Some of the high res models are even
showing wrap around precip from the surface low starting this aftn
and continuing through the night across portions of the eastern
Columbia Basin into the Palouse. But they all agree that the
heavier precip will be across the north.

Tonight through Saturday Night: The low will remain near the WA/OR
border and bring continuous pieces of energy into the region.

*Winds: Winds will become northeast Friday evening and begin to
 blow down the Highway 95 corridor around midnight. By morning the
 winds will spread down the north/south oriented valleys of
 northern WA and into the Columbia Basin and the Spokane area.
 These winds will remain elevated through Saturday night. Sunday
 winds will continue, but will be less than what is seen Saturday.
 Have decided to issue a wind advisory for Boundary, Bonner and
 western Kootenai counties for Sat and Sat night with gusts up to
 50 mph possible.

*Snow Levels: Snow levels will start out above 5k ft this
 afternoon and then lower quickly overnight and Sat morning.
 Saturday levels will be btwn 2500-3500 ft, with another drop to
 1500-2500 ft Sat night into Sunday morning.

*Rain/Snow: Today and tonight we should see rain and high mountain
 snow. Towards Saturday morning we will start to see snow mix with
 rain across some of the northern valleys of NE WA and N ID.
 Cannot rule out some rain/snow mix down along the Highway 2
 corridor during the afternoon, but it should not be accumulating.
 Sat night most locations along Highway 2 and northward will see
 rain/snow mix, with possible very light accumulations of less
 than an inch, mainly for grassy surfaces. The mountains however
 could see 6 to 12 inches of snow. Will continue the winter storm
 watch.

*Temperatures: Have lowered our temperatures a few degrees further
 that what was previously in the forecast. Lows in the mid 20s to
 mid 30s is forecast. Saturday high temps will be 20-25 degrees
 below average for this time of the year. Our high will actually
 be what we should typically see for our low temperatures for the
 end of September. Highs in the 40s expected. Wind chills in the
 20s to mid 30s is expected...even lower in the mountains.

*Impacts: Lots of potential impacts, so will make this brief.
 People keeping gardens going, or have not harvested their bounty:
 it would be best to either protect your sensitive plants or pick
and pull your items. Any outdoor enthusiasts: Dress for the
weather. It is going to feel like winter, a fleece will likely not
cut it. Boaters: be prepared for choppy waters, white caps.
Columbia Basin People: Not a lot of precipitation is expected
south of a line from from Ritzville to Vantage. So, any recently
plowed fields could produce some blowing dust Saturday afternoon
and evening. Travelers: Be prepared for winter driving conditions,
especially across the higher terrain. Even in the valleys during
the late night and early morning hours, roads will likely become
slick. Other: the winds may cause isolated power outages and/or
small tree branches to break. /Nisbet

Sunday: Bands of precipitation are expected to continue to wrap
around the center of the cold upper low parked over Oregon on
Sunday. Forecasting deformation bands is tough leading to a low
confidence forecast for precipitation amounts on Sunday. At this
time it looks like the mountains of the central and southern Idaho
Panhandle will have the best opportunity to receive an additional
1 to 4 inches of high elevation snow on Sunday. The Cascades will
also have a good shot of a couple inches of wet accumulation.
Even though snow levels will be down to the valley floors Sunday
morning, it may be tough for snow to accumulate in places like
Kellogg, St Maries, Coeur d'Alene, and Spokane. Early morning
temperatures are expected to be at or below freezing, but ground
temperatures may be too warm for much accumulation. A couple hours
after sunrise, snow may even struggle to accumulate on pavement
on well traveled mountain roads. We are only a week removed from
the equinox and the sun angle is pretty high.

High temperatures on Sunday have been lowered to be in line with
MOS guidance from the evening model runs. Many communities in the
northern and central Idaho Panhandle and northeast Washington will
likely struggle to get out of the upper 30s on Sunday afternoon.
Some long standing reporting sites will break records for the
coldest high temperatures for the month of September. Our forecast
for Spokane is 40 degrees which is very close to the record
coldest high temp on record for September of 39 set on Sep 23,
1926. To add insult to injury, northeast winds of 15 to 25 mph in
the Columbia Basin and down the Highway 95 corridor in north Idaho
will make it feel even colder. Wind chills in the teens during
the morning will only rebound into the mid to upper 20s.

Monday and Tuesday: Confidence is growing that widespread killing
frost will occur across large portions of the Inland Northwest
Monday morning and Tuesday morning. There may be enough northeast
wind persisting into the early morning hours on Monday to keep
some agricultural areas of the Columbia Basin from falling into
the upper 20s and low 30s. If a killing freeze doesn't occur
Monday morning around Moses Lake and sheltered cold pockets around
Wenatchee, chances are good that a freeze will occur Tuesday
morning. At this time, it looks like Tuesday morning will be the
coldest morning of the week region-wide under clearing skies and
light winds. Notoriously cold spots like Republic, Deer Park,
Springdale may dip into the low 20s Tue morning.

Wednesday and Thursday: Temperatures will slowly moderate Wed and
Thu. Afternoon highs in the 50s with pockets of low 60s in the
Columbia Basin and L-C Valley will still be a good 10 to 15
degrees below average. There are small chances for precipitation
Wed night into Thu with an incoming trough. /GKoch

.AVIATION...
06Z TAFS: The area will be in a weak lull between systems
tonight. Limited shower chances will linger around the
GEG/SFF/COE/PUW area through the early afternoon. There is a
threat of MVFR cigs overnight/early Friday over GEG/SFF/COE/PUW
but the confidence low. The next front and area of low pressure
starts to move Friday, leading to increasing shower chances again
with more breezy conditions. Some thunderstorms may be found near
GEG/SFF/COE as well. Overall precipitation through this TAF period
will be mainly isold-sct in variety, though better chances
develop going into Friday night late. Winds be mainly west to
southwest, but the intrusion of the cold front from the will start
to impinge on north ID, turning COE winds toward northeast late

Raw and windy northeast winds will begin late Friday night down
the Highway 95 corridor and then spread into Washington Saturday
morning. Breezy winds will continue through Sunday. Blowing dust
is a growing concern if we do not receive any appreciable
precipitation before Saturday across portions of the Columbia
Basin.

The unseasonably cold weather system will bring a chance of snow
over higher terrain Friday through Sunday. In the valleys areas
of frost are possible each morning this weekend and into early
next week.
