.SYNOPSIS...
Hot temperatures continue today with temperatures reaching
well into the mid to upper 90s. Wildfire smoke will plague
parts of the Inland Northwest contributing to areas of poor
air quality. Thunderstorm chances will be on the rise this evening
and continuing over the next few days. A few storms may be strong
producing hail and gusty winds today and Friday. By Saturday, the
concern will become heavy rain. Drier weather arrives early next
week with seasonal temperatures.

.DISCUSSION...
Today through Friday night: It will be another very warm day across
the Inland Northwest with afternoon highs returning into the
upper 90s to low 100s. Readings should fall shy of Wednesday
afternoon but only by 1-3 degrees on average. The upper-level
pattern is beginning to shift however as the offshore low wobbles
closer to Northern California/ Southwest Oregon Coastline and
deeper moisture begins to stream northward toward the Inland NW.
As a result, thunderstorm chances will be on the rise. The
increased lightning activity will raise concern for new fire
starts and red flag warnings have been issued for this lightning
potential. A few storms could also be strong bringing a threat for
hail and gusty winds.
The first surge of thunderstorms will impact southeastern WA and
the lower Idaho Panhandle this afternoon. Gusty outflow winds of
35-45 mph will be possible with this activity. Numerous models
show outflow winds coming from a line of convection as this
activity tracks into SE WA and NC ID. This boundary could act to
generate new cells across the central and eastern Columbia Basin
as well as the Palouse. Further west, surface heating will promote
a few cells in the Cascades with the greatest risk for areas
south of Lake Chelan.
A weak upper-level wave moves into Ern WA and N ID overnight and
will slowly limp northward into the northern mountains Friday
morning. There will be plenty of moisture and midlevel
instability in the atmosphere for this wave to work with. The main
uncertainty will be how quick this wave weakens and
showers/thunderstorms transition back to showers/clouds. I do
anticipate this wave to be at its peak intensity while in the
Basin and lower ID Panhandle and weaken while moving into my
northern mountains. As such, we have delayed the start of our red
flag warnings for the northern mountain districts until Friday
afternoon. If this wave is stronger...we may need to adjust the
start times.
A second wave of moisture and lift arrive late Friday into Friday
night bringing the potential for another round of thunderstorms.
If timing holds, this second wave will move into southern WA/NC ID
just after 5PM and track northward overnight. With sufficient
cloud breaks Friday afternoon prior to this feature, additional
thunderstorms could spring to life, especially over the higher
terrain. All and all, it will likely be a chaotic environment for
the next two days until the cooler air arrives on Saturday. A few
storms on Friday could also pack a punch over southeastern WA and
NC ID producing gusty winds and small hail. Temperatures on Friday
will be cooler, coming in 10 degrees cooler than Thursday. /sb
Saturday and Sunday: Expect cool, wet and active weather for the
weekend as a strong upper low rolls through the Inland Northwest.
As it makes its way across Oregon Saturday morning, moisture will
increase with good diffluence aloft along with a swath of mid
level instability. There is a chance of nocturnal convection
Saturday morning with isolated lightning strikes, brief downpours
and possibly gusty outflow winds. A better chance for wet
thunderstorms arrives late Saturday afternoon and into the evening
as surface based convection peaks with the arrival of the upper
trough. Most unstable capes near 2000-2500 J/kg, especially in the
northern mountains and also across southeast WA. Pwats increase
to over an inch across much of the region with impressive qpf with
the storms. The timing of the upper trough arrival has slowed
slightly, with the focus of the moderate to heavy rainfall from
Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning with the heavier amounts
across northeast Washington into north Idaho. 24 hour
precipitation amounts could range from around a quarter of an inch
from Wenatchee to Moses Lake, a half inch from Omak to Spokane,
and near an inch from Republic to Sandpoint and Kellogg. These wet
thunderstorms increase the threat of flash flooding. Gusty west
to southwest winds will develop Saturday afternoon through Sunday
morning, especially from the Cascade valleys to the Columbia Basin
with speeds to 25 mph. Showers will be slow to depart from
northeast Washington and north Idaho Sunday with another round of
afternoon thunderstorms. Daytime temperatures will cool
dramatically with upper 70s to lower 80s on Saturday, followed by
widespread 70s for Sunday.
Monday through Thursday: The remains of the upper level low
finally exit to east by Monday, leaving a drier westly flow
aloft that lasts for most of the week. Expect the passage of
weak waves, leaning toward a small chance of showers in the
northern mountains Monday afternoon and even for Tuesday afternoon.
Gusty gaps winds will develop each evening in the Cacades.
Temperatures will gradually warm into the 80s, near seasonal
normal by mid week. /rfox.

06Z TAFS: VFR conditions expected across the region. Wildfire
smoke from the Williams Flats Fire will continue to be a problem,
and may bring MVFR visibility to KGEG & KSFF. Confidence is low
though.
Showers and thunderstorms will redevelop Thursday afternoon
across the Cascades and SE WA and the southern ID Panhandle...and
continue through the TAF period. Mention VCSH for LWS-PUW.
Confidence isn't high yet for showers or thunderstorms to be
mentioned with certainty for these terminals.
