High pressure to the north will strengthen into Thursday.
Meanwhile low pressure off the Southeast coast will intensify
and become nearly stationary south of Long Island from Wednesday
night into Friday, then weaken and move slowly east Friday
night into Saturday, A weakening cold front will move across
Saturday night into Sunday. High pressure will build behind the
front early next week.

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING/...
The forecast is mainly on track with only minor adjustments made
to some of the hourly forecast elements, particularly cloud
cover. Some areas have cleared out, but conditions are expected
to become cloudy once again overnight.

Showers with a developing low to the south could reach coastal
sections late. NE winds should remain nearly steady, maybe
increase slightly after midnight, around 15G25 mph at the coast,
and 5-10 mph most inland sections.

Lows tonight should be in the 50s in most places, except upper
40s well inland north/west of NYC.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM WEDNESDAY MORNING THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/...
Complex situation begins to evolve as an upper trough to the
west merges with offshore troughing and then closes off beneath
an amplifying ridge over eastern NoAm. This should result in a
period of rainfall mainly Wed morning, tapering off in the
afternoon as the closed low drifts off just to the NE. Meanwhile
strengthening sfc high pressure over northern New England and
eastern Canada will interact with the developing low to the
south to produce strengthening NE winds Wed into Wed night,
backing N late Wed night as the low parks near 39N 70W. Winds
across the forks of Long Island should increase close to 30 mph
with gusts up to 45 mph by daybreak and to 20-25 mph with gusts
30-35 mph most elsewhere along the coast and in NYC.

It will remain cool, with high temps on Wed just shy of 60 in
most places, then falling to near 50 along the coast and into
the 40s inland Wed night via CAA on the NW flank of the offshore
low.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Greatest impacts with a coastal storm will be felt east (Eastern
Long Island/SE CT) late this week.

Stacked low just south of the 40N/70W benchmark will have an impact
on the local area Thursday and Friday before finally ejecting east
ahead of next vigorous but slowing trough. This trough is slowed in
this blocked pattern as it lifts north of the Great Lakes region
late this weekend into early next week.

The offshore low will result in periods of rain with highest chances
east, and lower chances west, and gusty north/northeast winds.
Again, the strongest winds will impact eastern locations, with much
lighter winds west. In fact, gusts close to 50 mph are quite
possible Thursday and Thursday night over Long Island, and possibly
SE CT.

Once the western Atlantic low pulls away, a weakening cold front way
out ahead of the upstream trough passes Sat night into Sunday, with
little fanfare other than a few showers and clouds.

Temperatures will begin below normal due to clouds and northerly
winds. Temperatures will moderate over the weekend into early next
week closer to normal levels as the storm pulls away.

&&

.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Low pressure will approach from the south tonight and meander
through the end of the week before moving northeast by the
weekend.

VFR to start the TAF period, however MVFR ceilings develop this
morning as showers approach the terminals.

Winds remain from the NE 10-15 kts with gusts developing this
morning 15-20 kts and 20-25 kts by this afternoon. Gusts could
be higher than forecast, especially E of the NYC terminals along
the coast Thursday evening, closer to the low. Will need to
monitor the potential for low level wind shear into tomorrow
afternoon and evening, more likely for the eastern terminals.

.OUTLOOK FOR 06Z THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY...
.Thurs morning-Friday...MVFR or lower possible with a chance of
rain. NE wind gusts 25-30 kt possible.
.Saturday...MVFR early becoming VFR late.
.Sunday...VFR.

.MARINE...
Winds will continue to increase in response to a strengthening
pressure gradient between high pressure to the north and
developing storm to the south. Gale warnings have been issued
for the ocean waters beginning tonight, with a storm watch for
the ocean E of Moriches Inlet for Thu into Thu night. A gale
watch has also been issued for the E Sound/Bays beginning Wed
night, and for the remaining non-ocean waters on Thu.

On Thursday, Gale force winds are likely as the pressure
gradient tightens north of low pressure. Most available guidance
also indicates storm force winds (48+ kt) for the eastern ocean
waters later Thursday and Thursday night.

Gales likely linger into Friday, then winds will finally diminish
this weekend as the storm pulls away.

Rough seas Thursday will remain elevated into the weekend, but do
subside as winds diminish.

.HYDROLOGY...
A coastal low will impact the area from mid to late week.
Rainfall from Wed into Fri could total as much as 1.5-2.5 inches
across SE CT and the forks of Long Island, about an inch for the
rest of Long Island and southern CT, about 3/4 inch for NYC
metro, and 1/4 to 1/2 inch NW of the city. No widespread
hydrologic issues are expected at this time due to the long
duration of the event and episodic nature of any heavier
rainfall.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
There is the potential for widespread minor coastal flooding and
localized moderate flooding from Wednesday through Friday
depending on the track and intensity of low pressure
developing over the western Atlantic. The south shore back bays
of Nassau and SW Suffolk in particular could see several cycles
with moderate flooding. Locations adjacent to Peconic and
Gardiners Bays, and the north facing coastlines of the twin
Forks of Long Island, may also be susceptible to moderate
flooding.

Beach erosion will also be possible Thu into Fri morning due to
high surf.
