.SYNOPSIS...
Polar high pressure builds in from the north today before giving way
to a storm system that will impact the area late tonight through
Tuesday night. High pressure briefly builds into the region
Wednesday into Thursday before another storm system impacts the area
for the end of the week into the weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Forecast overall on track. There are overcast conditions with
forecast temperatures and dewpoints within a few degrees of
observed values.

High pressure noses down from the north today, keeping
conditions dry. It will remain cloudy with high temperatures a
few degrees below normal, mainly in the middle and upper 30s.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
Strong polar high pressure across eastern Canada will lay the
foundation for a significant winter weather event across the region
from late tonight through Tuesday night. While models are in good
agreement with the overall large scale features, there continue
to be differences with the timing of warming aloft. The NAM solution
continues to be the quickest with a prolonged period of sleet across
most locations, while GFS and more so ECMWF are slower with more
snow accumulation potential before a wintry mix and/or changeover
to rain occurs. Have decided to go with the middle ground regarding
thermal profiles aloft as well as surface temperatures.

The main low with this system takes a track up through the Great
Lakes Tuesday into Tuesday night with a secondary developing
near the area Tuesday evening. The latter of which develops too
late to bring back enough cold air for moderate to heavy rain to
transition back to snow/ice overnight Tuesday. However, western
portions of Orange County may very well never get above freezing
with a significant ice accretion possible.

Light snow is most likely to develop within a few hours either side
of daybreak Tuesday across the NYC metro, then overspreads the remainder
of the forecast area from SW to NE during the morning hours. Snow
will transition over to a mix at the coast late morning/early
afternoon, with a more gradual transition inland. Should the
warmer solutions such as the NAM become a realization, then the
potential is there for more sleet and freezing rain versus snow.

At this time, looking for mostly 1 to 4 inches of snowfall along
the coast, and 4 to 7 inches along with a tenth to quarter inch
of ice accretion north and west of NYC. After collaboration with
the surrounding office, a winter storm watch remains in effect for
Orange County NY and western Passaic in NJ for the combination of
significant snow and ice. An advisory has been issued for all other
zones except eastern Suffolk County and the South Shore of Long Island.
Even if snow totals here don't reach advisory criteria, there is
concern that freezing rain ends up being more widespread than currently
forecast. It however at this point appears that coastal areas within
the advisory would only pick up perhaps no more than a few hundredths
of an inch of ice accretion.

Temperatures will very slowly rise from the 20s around daybreak
Tuesday to above freezing by late afternoon/early evening
except for far interior locations where temperatures may only be
in the upper 20s. A gradual rise will continue Tuesday night as
easterly winds scour out the low-level cold air.

Easterly winds Tuesday afternoon could gusts up to 35 mph along the
coast and 20 to 30 mph inland.

Precipitation tapers off after midnight with total liquid
equivalent of 1 to 1.5 inches.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Any leftover precipitation comes to an end Wednesday morning, with
drier air working into the region Wednesday afternoon through
Thursday as high pressure builds over the area.

The dry weather will be shortlived, as the next weather system to
impact the area begins to take shape over the western U.S. By
Thursday night, a strengthening area of low pressure in the lee of
the Rockies begins to move eastward in association with a shortwave
trough digging into the central U.S. As the low tracks towards the
Great Lakes on Friday, precipitation will overspread the area in the
afternoon, continuing into the day on Saturday. The parent low is
expected to track well west of the area, resulting in precipitation
remaining almost entirely rain, with the possible exception of a
brief period of mixed precipitation at the onset across the Lower
Hudson Valley if precipitation is able to move in while temperatures
are still below freezing. Rain then continues through Friday night
and into the day on Saturday before the low pulls off to the
northeast Saturday night and any lingering precipitation comes to an
end.

Temperatures on Friday and Saturday will be several degrees
above normal as southerly flow ushers in warmer air ahead of the
approaching low. Cold air advection on the back side of the
departing low then ushers in slightly below normal temperatures
for Sunday.

.AVIATION /18Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
High pressure builds to the north this afternoon and into this
evening. Low pressure begins to impact the region from the
southwest late tonight.

VFR through the day and into tonight, with MVFR to possibly IFR
conditions developing late tonight, after 08Z, in light snow.
Most of the day Tuesday will be SN and IP across all terminals
but KJFK/KISP may turn over to mostly IP and RA by 19Z. IP
should cut down on runway accumulations but there is a concern
over the potential for a prolonged period of IP across the
region. A short period of FZRA is possible Tuesday afternoon
across the interior. A turnover to plain rain 21-00Z across NYC
terminals and continues to around midnight.

Light northerly winds, less than 10 kt, become NE late this
morning into this afternoon. Coastal terminals may have a period
of more easterly winds this afternoon. NE winds increase to 10
to 15 kt after 08Z and remain pretty consistent through the day
until becoming somewhat gusty to 25 Kt in the afternoon.

Snowfall rates near 1" per hr for 1-2 hrs possible at onset of
precipitation.

.18z Tuesday...Wintry mix changing to rain late Tuesday for the
NYC metro/coastal terminals, but remaining a wintry mix across
the interior. The changeover to all rain across the interior
gradually progresses northward during Tuesday evening and night,
with only portion of the Lower Hudson Valley remaining a mix of
rain and snow late Tuesday night.
.Wednesday...Becoming VFR with precipitation ending early in the
morning. Increasing W winds, 15 to 20 kt, G25-35 kt.
.Thursday...VFR.
.Friday...VFR becoming MVFR or lower in rain. There is a chance of
rain and snow across the interior early.

.MARINE...
Winds and seas remain below SCA levels across the forecast waters
today and tonight.

A storm system impacting the waters late Tuesday through Wednesday
will result in strong easterlies with a potential for gale force
gusts on the ocean waters and SCA elsewhere. As a result, a gale
watch for the ocean and small craft advisories have been issued for
Tuesday and Tuesday evening. Winds will briefly subside below SCA
conditions Tuesday night, however on the backside of the system,
winds increase once again with a better chance of gales on all
waters on Wednesday.

Winds and seas will gradually begin to subside Wednesday night
as high pressure builds over the waters. Conditions will remain
above SCA levels on the non ocean waters through the night. On
the ocean, SCA conditions will persist into Thursday afternoon
before both winds and seas finally fall below SCA levels. A
period of quiet weather is then expected across the waters
Thursday night through much of the day on Friday before winds
and seas begin to increase again Friday afternoon ahead of the
next system approaching from the west.

A significant precipitation event is likely from late tonight
through Tuesday night with liquid equivalent amounts on the
order of 1.00 to 1.50 inches. Some of this will be in the in
the frozen form. Smaller rivers and streams could experience
minor flooding.

A larger flood threat exists with the late week system due to
additional rainfall and wet antecedent conditions. Precipitation
amounts with this system could be in the 1-2 inch range.
