Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A cold front approaches from the west into Tuesday, with an area
of low pressure riding along it. This low tracks into
southwestern Maine by Wednesday morning, bringing its
associated cold front through the area Tuesday night. An arctic
cold front passes on Wednesday, followed by Canadian high
pressure building in through the end of the week. This high
slowly shifts to the south and east over the weekend. A frontal
system may approach early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
Temperatures outside of urban areas have fallen off much faster
than expected. So have updated hourly temperatures and lows
accordingly. Noting though the approach of stratus from the S-SE
and expectation of a continued thickening of high then mid
clouds, would expect that most fall off should come to an end
not long after 6Z.

Noting latest models and radar trends, have gone with a dry
forecast for the remainder of tonight.

Lows overnight will be in the teens across the interior and Long
Island Pine Barrens and from around 20 to the mid 20s elsewhere
(warmest in NYC). These values should be near to slightly above
normal.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM WEDNESDAY/...
Trend for slower onset time for precipitation continues in the
models, so have made the entire area dry through and including
the 12Z hour.

A 700-500 hPa shortwave trough approaches on Tuesday, reaching
Western PA/far W NY by Tuesday evening. Ahead of this system,
precipitation will spread across the entire area by Tuesday
afternoon into early Tuesday evening. Precipitation will start
out as light snow across mainly western zones Tuesday morning,
but begin to change over to rain by late morning into early
afternoon across coastal areas. Across far western sections of
northeast New Jersey, Lower Hudson Valley and northwest
Connecticut the precipitation will be predominately snow.
Snowfall amounts of 2 to 5 inches are possible across these
areas, therefore a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued.
Across the remainder of the interior 1 to 2 inches is possible,
with a an inch or less at the coast.

The precipitation tapers off during the early morning hours on
Wednesday.

Highs Tuesday will get into the mid upper 30s inland and the
lower 40s at the coast. Temperatures Tuesday night will be in
the upper teens to low 20s.

There is the potential for black ice due to residual water
freezing Tuesday night. Gusty west winds develop behind the
cold frontal passage with gusts up to 30 mph.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
The main story in the long term will be a frigid air mass for late
Wednesday through the end of the week. The frigid air will be
associated with a polar vortex/anomalous upper level cyclone that
will spin over the Great Lakes on Wednesday and then lift up across
New England/southeast Canada on Thursday.

The potential exists for record lows as well as record low max
temperatures on Thursday. See climate section below. Wind chills are
likely to range between -15 and -25, especially inland, late
Wednesday night into Thursday.

An initial cold front continues moving east on Wednesday morning.
Attention turns to the main arctic cold front that will quickly
swing across from west to east Wednesday afternoon. The air mass is
quite dry ahead of the arctic boundary with dew points in the single
digits. The forcing with the arctic front is weak, but with a
significant amount of cold air in the mid levels advecting in above
the surface, lapse rates are quite impressive. The NAM-3KM is
progging a few hundred J/kg of SBCAPE along and ahead of the front.

The potential exists for a broken band of snow showers quickly
moving from west to east on Wednesday afternoon. There could be some
snow squalls that put down a quick half to one inch with rapidly
reduced visibilities. Coverage of the most intense snow squalls
remains on uncertain and all locations are not expected to see them.
Based on cold temperatures aloft, any snow would be on the drier
side. Any snow showers/squalls are likely to move quickly, only
lasting 30 minutes to at most an hour. The main negating factor is
the dry subcloud layer that will likely be present. Have capped PoPs
off in the chance category.

Strong cold advection along and behind the front will bring
sustained winds 20-25 mph with gusts 30-40 mph, highest at the
coast. The strongest pressure gradient exists for the first half of
Wednesday night with winds gradually coming down Thursday morning.

Frigid air then moves in behind the front Wednesday evening into
Thursday. There is some concern that with the cold air being
transported in on a westerly, downslope component, which could
negate a colder scenario. A northerly flow typically helps with cold
air drainage, especially with a limited snowpack over the region.
However, the source of the cold is anomalous and should be able to
overcome any downsloping.

Temperatures will plummet into the single digits for most Thursday
morning and possibly a few degrees below zero across the interior.
Highs will only reach the low and mid teens on Thursday. Another
cold night is likely Thursday night with temps in the single digits.
The air mass moderates on Friday with highs reaching the low and mid
20s. Winds will not be as strong Thursday into Friday, but wind
chills are likely to remain below zero from much of the time
Thursday into Friday morning. Wind chills warm into the teens on
Friday afternoon.

Weak shortwave energy rounding the base of the upper cyclone Friday
is currently progged to pass us to the south. Any slight shift in
this energy could bring a few snow showers/flurries on Friday. Upper
ridging moves overhead this weekend with high pressure along the
eastern seaboard. Temperatures moderate to near freezing on Saturday
and then into the low 40s on Sunday. The next front may approach
early next week.

VFR to MVFR overnight - MVFR mainly N and E of city terminals.
Light N-NE winds bcmg E later tonight.

MVFR to IFR Tuesday. Mixed PCPN begins late morning/early aftn.
Mostly rain for the city and coastal terminals. Mixed rain and snow
elsewhere. CHC all snow at KSWF. PCPN ends near midnight.  Winds
Tuesday mostly SE 10-15 kt with gusts up to around 20 kt.

Most likely total runway snow accumulations: KSWF 3-5 inches,
KHPN/KTEB 1-2 inches, KEWR/KLGA 1 inch, KBDR/KGON 1/2 to 1 inch,
KJFK/KISP 1/2 inch.

High end potential amounts generally 1-2 inches higher.

Low end potential amounts: KSWF 1-2 inches, KHPN/KTEB/KEWR less than
1/2 inch, elsewhere no accumulation.

.OUTLOOK FOR 06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY...
.Tuesday night...VFR. West winds G20kt.
.Wednesday...VFR in the morning, then local IFR/LIFR possible with
scattered snow showers/squalls in the afternoon. W winds G25-30kt in
the afternoon. Gusts to 35-40 kt possible along the coast.
.Wednesday night...VFR. W winds G30-35kt in the evening, G20-25 kt
after midnight.
.Thursday...VFR. W winds G15-20kt.
.Friday-Saturday...VFR.

.MARINE...
Minor changes were made with this update to reflect the latest
trends in observations and guidance. The forecast appears on
track.

A light pressure gradient over the waters will produce winds of
around 10 kt or less over all waters tonight. Winds and seas
increase on Tuesday, with Small Craft Advisory (SCA) conditions
likely Tuesday afternoon on the ocean waters.

Strong cold advection behind an arctic cold front will lead to an
increasing potential for Gales on Wednesday into Wednesday night. A
gale watch has been issued on all waters. Winds decrease late
Wednesday night, but SCA conditions are likely to continue into
Thursday night, especially on the ocean. The pressure gradient
slackens over the waters from Friday into Saturday with sub-
SCA conditions.

.HYDROLOGY...
A strong storm system will impact the area Tuesday into
Wednesday. Precipitation will be in the form of mostly snow
across the interior basins with rain along the coast. Total
rainfall with this storm looks to be around a half an inch with
higher amounts possible.

No hydrologic impacts are expected during the extended forecast.
