Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
A coastal storm will impact the area from Sunday through Monday
night. Weak high pressure will build in through the middle of
the week. A cold front will move through Thursday night. With
another frontal system impacting the area late in the week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
Temperatures and dewpoints are in generally good agreement
between forecast and observed values. Forecast remains on track.
High level clouds are increasing as evident in IR satellite
imagery with more mid level clouds expected to move across
overnight.

Cold dry air continues to funnel south into our CWA from a high
pressure system centered over Quebec, which is expected to
gradually weaken. An upper level ridge axis over western PA
shifts into NY State. This shift brings in a moist airmass with
precipitable water values increasing from 0.20 inches to 0.50
inches by the morning. Despite this increasing moisture trend
lingering cold air near the surface will allow temperatures to
fall into the low to mid 20s overnight.

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Complex system Sunday morning could bring wintry mix in the
late morning hours prior to an all day rain. Precip type will
depend on the duration of the lingering cold air mass. Model
soundings in our northern counties show a subfreezing profile
with a slight 0F isothermal layer near 800mb. This lends to a
near complete snow sounding in the morning hours. Near the city
and across Long Island, this warm later is more pronounced and
as a result could see more a a snow/sleet/rain mix. Any snowfall
accumulations would be around or less than one inch near the
city with higher amounts further north.

By the afternoon, the upper level trough over the Great Lake
region pivots into the Ohio River Valley a broad low pressure
system develops near DelMarVa and deepens south of Long Island.
The orientation of the low will allow for significant isentropic
lift over the forecast area. This system brings with it a moist
and relatively warm air mass PWATs nearing 1 inch. Rainfall
amounts once the mixed precip changes over the rain could total
near 1 to 2 inches as the rain should last until the late
evening. Northern counties could see trace amounts of freezing
rain as surface temperatures hover around 28-33F for the Lower
Hudson Valley through most of the day.

As the low moves further offshore towards the overnight hours
cold air is pulled south behind the front. The 1000-500mb
thicknesses decrease to below 540 dm allowing for a second round
of mixed precipitation in the early morning hours particularly
for the Lower Hudson Valley and Southern CT. Uncertainty exists
in the accumulation totals as much is dependent on the eventual
track of the the offshore low.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The low will track slowly to Cape Cod through Monday night as
it continues to strengthen. Minor differences in the thermal
profiles between ECMWF, NAM, and GFS, with GFS a bit warmer than
the other two. Despite these minor differences, this continues
to be a low confidence precipitation forecast, especially in the
metro area and along the coast, with higher confidence inland.
As the surface and 850 mb lows pass east of Long Island, colder
air will filter in, allowing the wintry mix line to move south
Monday morning and afternoon. There will also be uncertainty in
precipitation intensity Monday morning and afternoon as models
are hinting at a heavy band of precipitation developing
somewhere across northeast New Jersey and the Lower Hudson
Valley, that might make its way into the New York City metro
area, but where exactly this sets up is still largely unknown.
This band will also add to the uncertainty in precipitation type
as dynamic cooling of the column would occur in the heavier
precipitation, changing precipitation back to snow quicker than
forecast. With all that in mind, thinking is that a changeover
to all snow is expected early Monday evening for the New York
City metro area and western and central Long Island. The Twin
Forks of Long Island may not changeover completely or at all.

As for snowfall amounts, 6 to 12 inches are possible across
portions of Northeast New Jersey, the Lower Hudson Valley and
inland southeastern Connecticut. A Winter Storm Watch continues
for these areas. This is a long duration event, with a snow to
wintry mix (or rain) to snow changeover for many places. There
may be impacts the Monday morning and evening commutes depending
on location and precipitation type transitions.

3 to 6 inches are expected across southern Westchester and
portions of Northeast New Jersey and portions of inland
southeastern Connecticut.

1 to 4 inches are expected for New York City, metro New Jersey,
central and western Long Island, and coastal .

Less than an inch is expected for the Twin Forks of Long Island and
coastal New London.

Liquid equivalent amounts will generally be between 1 and 1 3/4
inches.

An upper level system may impact the region late Tuesday into
Wednesday, but not confident enough to put POPs in for this
system just yet.

Colder air filters in behind an area of low pressure that
passes well south and east of Long Island. This may create some
instability across the ocean waters that may bring in some light
rain or light rain/snow showers for southern portions of Long
Island Wednesday night.

A frontal system may impact the area at the end of the week.

.AVIATION /06Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
High pressure gradually weakens overnight, then drifts to the
northeast Sunday as a warm front approaches from the southwest.
The warm front will likely remain to the south of Long Island Sunday
afternoon as a wave of low pressure begins to develop in the
vicinity of the Delmarva. This low then tracks slowly east through
Sunday night.

VFR conditions through the overnight and into early Sunday morning.
MVFR conditions develops as a mix of rain, snow, and sleet begins.
Conditions lower to IFR in the afternoon as the precipitation
transitions to all rain from south to north through 23Z. A
wintry mix will remain at KSWF through Sunday evening.

Any runway accumulations at the coastal terminals will be light and
slushy and should be short-lived. Around 1 inch is possible at KHPN
before a changeover to rain, and 2-4 inches is possible at KSWF
before mixing with sleet and possibly freezing rain by early evening.

N to NNE winds under 10 kt will veer to NE by morning. E/NE winds
Sunday morning increase to 10 to 15 kt, and to 15 to 20 kt in the
afternoon with gusts 20 to 30 kt, with the highest gusts along the
coast.

.OUTLOOK FOR 06Z MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY...
.Late Sunday Night...IFR conditions with rain at the coast and NYC
metro terminals, with a wintry mix at KSWF transitioning to periods
of rain toward 04Z. E/NE winds 15-20 kt with G20-30 kt, gusts as
high as 35 kt possible east of the NYC metro terminals. Wind
backing to the N/NE by morning.
.Monday...MVFR/IFR. Precipitation transitions back to all snow at
KSWF, then during the late afternoon and evening for the remaining
terminals. Northerly winds 15-20 kt gusting 20-25 kt gradually
diminish Monday night.
.Tuesday...MVFR in lingering snow early, otherwise VFR. NW winds G15-
20 kt.
.Wednesday...VFR.

North winds becoming NW winds of gale criteria begin Sunday
afternoon of the offshore waters. Waves increase to 8-9 feet for
the offshore waters. Winds diminish Sunday night, but should
still remain 25 to 30 kt on the ocean waters through Monday
night. Sub SCA waves for the eastern sound are expected by
Monday night.

Waves diminish Monday night, but remain above SCA criteria across
the ocean waters through Tuesday and perhaps the first half of
Tuesday night.

.HYDROLOGY...
1 to 1 3/4 inch liquid equivalent is expected Sunday through
Tuesday morning. No flooding is expected as conditions have been
dry and at least part of this is expected to be in
frozen/freezing form, especially well inland.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
There remains the potential for minor coastal flood impacts
with the Sunday into Monday high tides as a slow moving coastal
low tracks to the south and east of the region. While water
levels are low, there is also the potential for 7 to 10 ft
breakers late Sunday night into Monday morning. This could
result in some beach erosion and localized washovers,
especially along the south shore and twin forks region of Long
Island.
