.SHORT TERM...(Today through Tuesday)

Early-morning water vapor imagery revealed a potent shortwave
trough over northern parts of British Columbia and Alberta which
will translate southeast into the northern High Plains today and
through the mid MO Valley tonight. In the low levels, mesoanalysis
placed a stalled surface front from the western Dakotas through
north-central NE and into eastern KS as of 2 AM. That boundary is
forecast to shift east/northeast through our area today in
response to the progression of a surface low through the northern
Plains.

A strengthening low-level warm-advection regime has contributed to
widely scattered areas of light snow early this morning across
portions of NE and SD. And latest model guidance is suggestive
that the ongoing light precipitation will shift east through the
area this morning with little in the way of accumulation. We have
trended downward on today's high temperatures with lower to mid
40s west and lower 30s east.

Tonight, deep-layer forcing for ascent increases ahead of the
migratory shortwave trough, and along a strong arctic front which
will advance south through our area. It appears that a band of
precipitation will develop along the front with steepening lapse
rates potentially contributing to some embedded convective
elements. Initial precipitation type will be rain or perhaps a
wintry mix with a transition to light snow before ending early
Monday morning.

The steepening lapse rates coupled with an intense isallobaric
gradient across the front will result in a corridor of very
strong northwest winds within the post-frontal environment.
Sustained winds of 30-45 mph with gusts to near 60 mph appear
probable across portions of northeast NE beginning around 2 or 3
AM and continuing through Monday morning. As such, we have
upgraded the existing high wind watch to a warning. In addition to
the winds, strong cold advection behind the front will yield
rapidly falling temperatures with the potential for flash-freeze
conditions on wet, untreated roads.

Flurries or light snow showers could linger through Monday
morning with strong northwest winds overspreading the remainder of
the area. The cold advection will offset any increase in daytime
heating with temperatures hovering in the teens to lower 20s.

On Tuesday, the progression of an intense deep-layer cyclone into
the Great Lakes will result in the advancement of a polar air mass
through the mid MO Valley. Highs will be mainly in the single
digits and teens.

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Saturday)

The polar air mass will remain entrenched over our area through
mid week with dangerous wind chills of -20 to -35F developing on
Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Medium-range guidance continues to indicate a warming trend by
late in the workweek into the weekend.

Areas of MVFR cigs near FL015 will move in and out of TAF sites
overnight until more widespread MVFR cigs establish themselves
ahead of a weather system approaching eastern Nebraska by 12Z.
Then areas of light snow and fog will reduce vsbys into the IFR
category for several hours between 11Z and 19Z. Cigs below FL015
are likely during this time as well, with periods of IFR cigs. By
late afternoon, cigs and vsbys should lift to VFR as south to
southwest winds increase above 15kt. By 00Z, a strong low level
jet ahead a strong low pressure system will promote low level wind
shear as southwest to west winds blow at 40kt at FL020.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of west central
Iowa...east central Nebraska and northeast Nebraska.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

A high wind warning is in effect from midnight tonight until noon
on Monday.

An arctic front will move through the area tonight with northwest
winds increasing to 35 to 45 mph with gusts to 60 mph behind it.
Light rain will change to light snow with only minor accumulation.
However, rapidly falling temperatures behind the front could
result in a flash-freeze of any untreated road surfaces.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

On Tuesday and Wednesday, a reinforcing surge of polar air will
bring bitter cold to the region. Wind chill values on Tuesday and
Wednesday nights could fall to 20 to 35 below zero.

or a wintry mix changing over to light snow. While accumulations
should be minimal, rapidly falling temperatures behind the front could
result in a flash-freeze of any untreated road surfaces.
Additionally, winds will increase from the northwest at 20 to 35
mph with gusts to 40 to 50 mph late tonight into Monday morning.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday

On Tuesday and Wednesday, a reinforcing surge of polar air will
bring bitter cold to the region. Wind chill values on Tuesday and
Wednesday nights could fall to 15 to 30 below zero.
