Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Omaha/Valley NE 615 PM CDT Thu Jul 4 2019 .SHORT TERM...(Tonight through Sunday) Issued at 245 PM CDT Thu Jul 4 2019 Thunderstorm chances the next few days will continue to provide the main forecast challenges. Large scale pattern in the mid levels still features a trough from central Canada back into the western US, and a ridge over the Gulf Coast area. The flow in our area is from the west/southwest. The overall pattern will remain somewhat in place through the short term, except for a retrogression of the ridge back toward TX. It is another fairly low confidence forecast for tonight. Forcing is not overly strong, at least through the evening, and the atmosphere is only weakly capped. Suspect there will be some storms around this evening, but with slightly less coverage than last evening. The 12Z KOAX soundings showed there was 1.58 inches of precipitable water (PW), MUCAPE near 1400 J/kg and only 14 knots of effective shear. That will continue to change this afternoon, but it is not an environment strongly supporting severe storms. Latest short range convection allowing models (CAMs) suggest highest chance of seeing isolated to scattered storms this evening will be across the northern half of the forecast area and mainly before 10 pm. These could produce gusty winds and locally heavy rain. A blend of more model guidance, including some of the parameterized models, suggests an MCS will try to move in from the west after 1 am cdt. This will probably be somewhat linear or have linear segments with some potential for damaging winds. The model trend though is for the strongest storms to stay farther to the west, with the low level jet remaining in western or central parts of NE. PW values are forecast to mainly be in the 1.50 to 1.90 inch range. For Friday, expect that storms will tend to weaken through the morning. Uncertainty increases for the afternoon as a slightly cooler airmass tries to build into at least the northern part of the forecast area as a weak front tries to push south. This boundary could be the focus for heavy rain Friday night as the low level jet increases. Rain amounts over 2 inches could occur Friday night, as PW values increase into the 1.80 to 2.40 inch range. High temperatures Saturday and Sunday should be mostly in the 80s with lows in the mid 60s to lower 70s. Will keep thunderstorm chances in those periods mainly 20 to 40 percent. .LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Thursday) Issued at 245 PM CDT Thu Jul 4 2019 The overall large scale pattern remains in place early next week, with hints of weak shortwaves moving east/northeast through the region. Stronger mild level flow however should remain to our north and northwest. Kept chances for rain in our area mostly in the 20 to 30 percent range. There are hints that mid level heights will build a bit in our area toward Wednesday and Thursday, with a slightly drier signal and highs pushing back into the 90s. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Friday evening) Issued at 613 PM CDT Thu Jul 4 2019 Showers could be in the vicinity of KOFK through about 02z, then strong thunderstorms could affect this location 11-13z. Chances are highest generally north of a line from David City to Fremont and Harlan. Some storms could produce gusty winds, lightning and brief heavy rain, but the chance of widespread hazardous weather is low. Later tonight, mainly after 3 AM, the chance of thunderstorms will increase from the west. These storms could produce strong outflow winds and heavy rain, especially west of a line from Wayne to Schuyler and Seward. Storm chances will linger into Friday, especially through mid morning. Flooding is occurring on the Missouri River from around Blair southward to Rulo, and also above Lewis and Clark Lake. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday night through Thursday Storm chances are expected to increase again Friday evening into Friday night and Saturday morning. Storms could produce gusty winds and areas of heavy rain, which could cause localized flooding. Thunderstorms remain in the forecast through the weekend and into early next week. Later outlooks will provide more details on the threat of any severe storms. Flooding will continue along the Missouri River. Levels should be at or above flood stage from Blair southward to Rulo, and above Lewis and Clark Lake through the weekend and much of next week. .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT... Spotter activation will probably not be needed, but spotters are encouraged to report wind gusts, hail, and heavy rain amounts if they occur in your area.
