.SHORT TERM...(Today through Thursday)

At 4 AM, skies were partly cloudy with a mix of cirrus and mid
level stratocumulus. A few light radar echos were ongoing over
South Dakota and along the NE/SD border. Otherwise temperatures
were mild and winds were light and variable.

Weak ridging today ahead of a strong trough over the Western U.S.
that will be our main weather maker later this week. This will
lead to another nice day today, with numerous high cirrus drifting
across the region thanks to a subtropical jet and associated
moisture from the Eastern Pacific. A weak shortwave riding through
this flow may bring a sprinkle to northeast Nebraska this
morning, but most will stay dry. Afternoon highs today should
range from the mid 70s along the NE/KS border to the mid 60s along
the NE/SD border.

The main focus of the forecast remains on the shortwave over the
West Coast, and it's subsequent development into a very strong
storm system over the Central Plains Wednesday-Thursday. Rain
chances will be on the increase Tuesday night as diffluent flow
and isotropic lift take shape over a warm front aligned west-east
through central Nebraska. With around a 1000-1500 j/kg of elevated
CAPE and mid level lapse rates around 8.5 C/km there should be a
few rumbles of thunder early Wednesday morning. A few storms
could be hail producers.

The surface cyclone will deepen over the front range of Colorado
Wednesday. As this occurs we may see a warm nose of more stable
air in the mid levels filter into southeast Nebraska and southwest
Iowa during the day on Wednesday, further focusing the best
rain chances over northern Nebraska Wednesday late morning/early
afternoon. High temperatures Wednesday should be quite diverse
over the region, ranging from the upper 30s along the NE/SD border
to the mid 70s along the KS/NE border. Thunderstorm chances will
return by Wednesday evening as the core of the upper trough
approaches and erodes the mid level cap. Storm formation looks
possible Wednesday evening along both a warm front and cold front
near the KS/NE border. Severe storms are possible, with the main
threats being large hail and wind. Locations along and south of
I-80 are most likely to be impacted.

With the arrival of colder air Wednesday night we should see a
transition to snow in northeast Nebraska. The rain snow line will
then sag south and east very slowly Wednesday night and Thursday,
with a transition to snow probable in the Omaha and Lincoln areas
sometime Thursday evening. A Winter Storm Watch remains in place
for portions of northeast Nebraska, where storm total snow may
approach a 6-14 inches. Winds will also be gusty Thursday with
peak gusts of 35-50 mph possible in central/northeast Nebraska.
Don't plan on upgrading the watch tonight, and will leave it to
later shifts to decide between a Winter Storm Warning and a
Blizzard Warning. Really just semantics. Snow amounts in the Omaha
and Lincoln metros are expected to be light, likely only a trace
to an inch. Snowfall will diminish in intensity Thursday night,
before ending all together Friday morning.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Monday)

Drier weather expected Friday afternoon and Saturday under
prevailing northwest flow aloft. Can't rule out a few showers
Sunday, near the KS/NE/IA/MO conjunction point, as another storm
system passes to our south, but it looks like the majority of the
region will stay dry. Temperatures will be unseasonably cool
Friday (15-20 degrees below seasonal averages) with breezy
northeast winds. Then look for a warming trend over the weekend,
with afternoon highs returning to the 60s or low 70s by early
next week.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Wednesday afternoon)

VFR conditions will prevail through mid evening. Deteriorating
conditions though are expected to deteriorate conditions at
KOFK toward midnight. Modest increasing will allow for the
possibility of isold TSRA mid evening till around midnight. After
that will go with -SHRA/MVFR prevailing as precip activity
increases in areal coverage over NE NE the remainder of the fcst
pd.

As for KOMA, not out of the question an isolated -TSRA will move
through. Therefore have included a PROB30 late this evening
through early Wednesday morning to reflect this. MVFR cigs
prevailing then most of Wednesday morning. No precip activity
expected at KLNK but expect MVFR cigs to move mid morning
Wednesday.

LLWS will be a factor at both KOMA/KLNK late this evening through
early Wednesday morning.
