.SYNOPSIS....A chilly start this morning otherwise partly cloudy
and cool. One exception will be the Central Coast where scattered
rain and snow showers will continue mainly across Monterey County.
Clouds increase overnight into Saturday morning. Rain and wind
develop by Saturday afternoon as atmospheric river takes aim at
the Bay Area. High Wind Watches have been posted with Flash Flood
Watch for the Kincade Burn scar. Periods of rain to continue
through Sunday with major impacts to return holiday travelers.
Stalled front allows rain to continue into Monday before slowly
diminishing. Long range trends show a midweek storm followed by
more rain storms heading into next weekend.

.DISCUSSION...as of 08:15 AM PST Friday... Very cold temperatures
to start the Black Friday rush this morning. Overnight lows
bottomed out in the mid 20s throughout the North Bay valleys,
upper 20s to around 30 in the East Bay Valleys, low to mid 30s in
Silicon valley into the South Bay/Santa Cruz/Salinas Valley, and
mid to upper 30s along the San Francisco Bay Shoreline/Monterey
Peninsula. These were the coldest temperatures expected this week
with tonight forecast to be around 3-5 degrees warmer than last
night. The frost advisory/freeze warning will be allowed to expire
at 9 am this morning.

As of 800am, many sites were just a degree or two too warm to
break record temperatures. Many of these climate sites do not report
but once a day in the evening, so check back as we may have more broken
records to report at that time.

For today, a few lingering showers will persist across Monterey
county and with snow levels continuing to hover at or below 2500
feet through the day. Consequently, a winter weather advisory is in
effect for the Santa Lucia/Big Sur range at that elevation due to
the potential for additional light snow accumulations. Otherwise,
today should be a cool day with fair weather conditions -- partly
cloudy with afternoon temperatures peaking in the low to mid 50s.

Then, the first atmospheric river event of the wet season is set
to begin impacting the area on Saturday and into early next week.
See previous discussion for more details on this event. New
details will be issued with the afternoon forecast by 2-3pm this
afternoon. That said, expect a long duration of strong winds and
heavy rains arriving by midday Saturday and intensifying by the
time the sun begins to set Saturday evening. Widespread impacts
in the form of flooding, downed trees/power lines, mud slides, and
poor travel conditions should be expected. Travel impacts will be
exacerbated by the increased traffic from those returning home
after the Thanksgiving holiday this weekend.

More wet weather expected throughout most of next week.

.PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...as of 4:12 AM PST Friday...Lots of weather
items to consider once again this morning with numerous impacts
for the Bay Area. Will try and sequentially run through the next
several days.

Short term: Frost and freeze products remain in effect through
9 am this morning with temps from the upper 20s to upper 30s.

Scattered showers remain over the ocean and the Central Coast. As
cold upper trough pivots today the models bring those showers
onshore, mainly over Monterey county. Have issued a winter wx
advisory for the Santa Lucia range above Big Sur that includes
the Los Padres NF to account for 1-3 inches of snowfall as snow
showers become more numerous later this morning through sunset.

Tonight will be warmer (but still seasonably cool) as clouds
increase ahead of next incoming weather system. There will be
limited time to prepare for incoming storm. This system will be
different as it approaches form the west with more moisture and
warmer temperatures. Rain will develop by midday or early Saturday
afternoon most locations. A high wind watch has been posted for
all areas starting Saturday and lasting through early Sunday. As
low pressure deepens offshore very strong southerly winds will
develop, first over the ocean and then spreading inland. Coast and
hills will see strongest winds where gusts 50-70 mph will be
possible. Have started with Watch to allow for fine tuning once we
drop the frost/freeze and other non-precip headlines. Local wrf
model runs showing 60-70 mph winds along the coast and hills.
While that may be overdone will need to prepare for possible wind
damage including downed trees and associated power outages from
later Saturday into Sunday.

Next item will be precip concerns. Atmospheric river will take aim
at the the Bay Area. Rain will quickly overspread the region by
Saturday afternoon, then become heavy at times Saturday night into
early Sunday. All of the coastal hills from the North Bay to Big
Sur will be under the gun for several inches of rainfall.
Obviously were coming out of a dry fall so the large rivers have
plenty of storage capacity. Main concern area will be another test
for the Kincade burn scar thus a Flash Flood Watch has been
issued specifically to address this concern. The flashy creeks and
streams will see rapid rises and urban/street flooding will
likely occur Saturday night into Sunday morning.

There may be some decrease or lull for a time on Sunday but
subsequent moisture surges are expected later Sunday into early
Monday depending on exactly where the AR lines up. So Sunday
return travel will be adversely impacted as well as the Monday
morning return to work commute.

The parent upper low offshore will wobble west by Monday afternoon
allowing for a respite in the rain. However, the low will
eventually move inland by midweek with continued rain chances,
perhaps most focused from San Francisco southward.

After another break by about Thursday the models portend yet
another strong and cold trough by Friday into next weekend. Its
going to be a wet and windy next 7 days.

.AVIATION...as of 9:45 AM PST Friday...for 18Z TAFs. VFR
conditions are occuring this morning at the terminals. As the day
progresses, isolated rain showers are possible from about San
Jose and points south as the upper level trough axis passes
through the area. FEW/SCT cumulus and stratocumulus decks will
likely develop as well. Light winds this morning will become
onshore by the afternoon.

Vicinity of KSFO...VFR conditions are forecast today with FEW/SCT
cumulus and stratocumulus decks through the day at/above 3,500 ft
AGL. Light winds this morning will increase out of the west this
afternoon around 15 kt. Expect winds to become south/southeast by
the tail end of the TAF period, potentially becoming strong and
gusty during the day on Saturday.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR conditions are forecast to prevail at
SNS and MRY today. Can't rule out an isolated rain shower from
mid-morning through the afternoon that may bring brief periods of
MVFR ceilings. Light east/southeast winds this morning will become
onshore this afternoon. Southeast winds are then forecast to
develop overnight and into Saturday ahead of the next system.

.MARINE...as of 8:11 AM PST Friday...Generally light to locally
moderate westerly winds will prevail through the day over the
waters. Winds will become south/southeast tonight and begin to
increase ahead of the next system, reaching gale-force during the
day on Saturday. These winds will generate large wind-driven
waves.
