.SYNOPSIS...A powerful storm system is forecast to produce
damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and localized urban and small
stream flooding across the entire region from late today into
Saturday morning. Numerous showers and isolated thunderstorms are
expected from Saturday afternoon through Saturday night, along
with continued gusty winds. Two cold weather systems will follow
for Sunday and Monday, bringing additional widespread showers and
dropping snow levels as low as 2000 feet by Monday. Dry but cool
weather returns Tuesday through Thursday of next week.

.DISCUSSION...as of 9:22 AM PST Friday...Forecast for incoming
storm is more or less on track. If there is any trend it is a
perhaps slight slowing of the onset of significant rain and winds
until later tonight into early Saturday morning. This is due to
the surface low intensifying as strong jet stream energy is
inducing rapid cyclogenesis offshore. Have gone ahead and
upgraded the High Wind Watch to a High Wind Warning.
Radar is slowly starting to fill in offshore but expect steady
rain to hold off until late this afternoon. Things will steadily
go down hill this evening as rain overspreads the entire region.
Southerly winds will ramp up as we get into the late evening and
overnight hours. Expect damaging winds to accompany the period
just ahead of and behind the front after midnight and through
sunrise. Some type of squall line or narrow cold frontal rain band
will likely be apparent on radar as this initial boundary passes
through.
There will be a relative lull in the precip behind the initial
front. Then we will be watching the upper and surface low with the
latest nam model bringing it onshore around Half Moon Bay Saturday
evening. If it stays south of the Golden Gate the North Bay may be
spared some of the heavier post frontal rains. Still expect
numerous showers and thunderstorms across the rest of the Bay Area
and Central Coast on Saturday afternoon/evening.
Shower threat will continue on Sunday but it will be much quieter
than Friday night/Saturday.
Next reinforcing shortwave will pass through Sunday night into
Monday with another organized band of showers. Final shortwave
then passes late Monday into very early Tuesday. This is when
coldest air will be around with 850 mb temps to -5 and some very
low snow levels will be possible but moisture limited.

.PREV DISCUSSION...As of 3:05 AM PST Friday...It's the calm before the
storm, with area temperatures mainly in the 50s with light winds.
Satellite imagery shows clouds moving in over California ahead of
the upcoming storm system expected to begin affecting the
forecast area later today. Forecast confidence is high that this
incoming system will bring strong and damaging winds to the area
as well as periods of heavy rain. Timing has shifted a little
slower than previous model runs, however model solutions still
bring warm-advection rains to the North Bay later this afternoon
and evening with heavier rains moving in overnight tonight and
Saturday morning. Southerly Winds will begin ramping up over the
coastal waters this afternoon and begin edging towards the coast
overnight.
Storm warnings are posted for our coastal waters and a High Wind
Watch is in effect for all of our land zones from mid afternoon
tonight. Winds will become quite strong and gusty by late this
afternoon, but the strongest winds are expected just ahead of the
cold front late Friday night when gusts 50 to 60 mph are likely,
with locally higher gusts expected in the hills and near the
coast. Widespread power outages are likely as a result of these
strong winds. Although the strongest winds are anticipated prior
to frontal passage late tonight, winds will remain strong and
gusty through Saturday and into Saturday evening. Winds are
expected to finally subside by Sunday as the low moves inland.
Rainfall with this system is expected to be significant. Recent
models have trended a bit slower with the timing this system, and
now the heaviest rain rates aren't expected to occur until
this evening in the North Bay and late tonight into early
Saturday elsewhere. Rain rates of one inch per hour are certainly
possible along the frontal boundary tonight and into early
Saturday, which will likely cause flooding concerns in low lying
urban areas as storm drains are overwhelmed. Also, some smaller
streams and creeks could reach bankfull by late tonight or
Saturday morning. Due to the somewhat slower timing of the
system, the Flash Flood Watch for most of our forecast area was
extended through Saturday morning, and is now in effect from this
evening through Saturday morning. The mainstem rivers such as the
Russian, Napa, and Salinas are expected to experience significant
rises by late Saturday, but are not currently expected to flood.
Showers will continue behind the front through Saturday and
Saturday night. Two more systems will bring additional widespread
shower activity to the area from Sunday into Tuesday. Rainfall total
estimates from this afternoon through Tuesday give 1.5-2 inches
to the inland valleys and 3-5 inches in the coastal mountains. A
much colder airmass with these will drop snow levels to 2000-3000
feet by Monday resulting in possible snow over the higher peaks.
Drier, but continued cool weather is forecast after Tuesday
through the rest of the week.

.AVIATION...As of 10:01 AM PST Friday...For 18Z TAFs. A very
impactful TAF period is expected over the next 24 to 30 hours as a
powerful system strengthens off the California coast. VFR to MVFR
ceilings are expected to prevail through much of the day in
advance of the system, but ceilings will drop through the night
solidly to MVFR-levels. In addition to the ceilings, strong
southerly winds will develop and impact virtually all terminals
with the potential for low level wind shear. The heaviest rain
will coincide with the frontal passage, which is expected to occur
sometime after 12-15Z Saturday.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR conditions are generally expected to hold
for the day with SCT/BKN deck around 3,200-3,500 ft with
OVC high clouds gradually lowering. Light winds this morning will
become southerly through the day, and increase through the night
and into Saturday morning. Likely will see Airport Weather Warning
Criteria at the terminal, but there remains some uncertainty as to
exactly when the 35 kt threshold will be hit. Rain will also
develop overnight and into the day on Saturday. Low level wind
shear will also be a concern with this storm.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR conditions are expected to prevail
through the day before ceilings lower to MVFR levels overnight
and into Saturday with the powerful approaching system. Very
strong southerly winds are expected to impact both SNS and MRY
with the potential for 50+ kt wind gusts very possible by the end
of the TAF period.

.MARINE...as of 08:57 AM PST Friday...A rapidly intensifying low
pressure system will move into the offshore waters tonight and
then track east across the coastal waters Saturday and Saturday
night. Gale-force winds or greater are expected starting this
evening and continuing through Saturday afternoon. There will be
the potential for frequent storm-force gusts, particularly south
of Pigeon Point. The fresh, wind- generated waves waves will
create dangerous sea conditions for mariners.
