...Red Flag Warning Tuesday through Wednesday morning for strong
offshore winds and critically low humidity...

.Another offshore flow event will impact the region Tuesday into
Wednesday morning featuring strong and gusty offshore winds and
critically low relative humidity. This event will not be as
strong as the last event, but still bring critical fire weather
conditions to the Bay Area. Winds will increase initially over
the North Bay on Tuesday morning before spreading southward.
Relative humidity will initially drop over the North Bay and then
also spread southward during the day Tuesday. Despite some weaker
winds with this event the relatively humidity readings will be
very low with no recovery at night. Winds ease through the day on
Wednesday, but the dry conditions remain.

locally strong across the area with occasional gusts up to 30

.SYNOPSIS...Winds will continue to decrease through Monday
morning. Cool nighttime temperatures are expected through much of
the week, especially in the interior valleys where patchy frost is
likely during the late night and early morning hours starting
tonight. Another round of strong, gusty, and dry offshore winds
are forecast from midday Tuesday through Wednesday morning, mainly
across the North and East Bay Hills. Winds during this next
offshore event are not expected to be as strong, or last as long,
as the current event, but they will still likely generate critical
fire weather conditions when combined with very low humidity.
Otherwise, expect sunny and mild days along with clear and cool
nights through the week and into next weekend.

.DISCUSSION...as of 09:28 AM PDT Monday...Main story outside the
fire weather conditions is the cold temps. Early morning lows in
North Bay were in the 30s with pockets in the 20s, all confined
into the valleys, whereas the ridges remained in the 40s and 50s.
The rest of the Bay Area was in the mid 30s to mid 50s, depending
upon location. This pattern will repeat again tonight with a
slight warming Tuesday night due to incoming winds. We'll see
another drop on Wednesday night and Thursday night. Otherwise the
region will generally have fair weather. Smoke will be the main
concern for the region outside the typical weather. Offshore flow
should push the smoke out to sea, but as we turn see the flow turn
onshore briefly today and then again late week, smoke will move
back into areas. Check with your local air quality management
district for further details on air quality. In addition, see the
fire weather discussion below for information concerning red flag
warnings.

.PREV DISCUSSION...As of 3:40 AM PDT Monday...Winds have been
gradually diminishing through the night as offshore gradients
ease. Winds have decreased most significantly at the lower
elevations. By 2 am, winds had fallen below Wind Advisory levels
at all lower elevation locations, as well as in the Santa Cruz
Mountains. Thus, the Wind Advisory for these areas was cancelled.
North to northeast winds continue to gust as high as 50 mph in the
North and East Bay Hills early this morning. The Wind Advisory
for the East Bay Hills remains in effect and the High Wind Warning
for the North Bay Mountains has been downgraded to a Wind
Advisory. Given current trends and short-range forecasts, all Wind
Advisories will likely be allowed to expire at 11 am.

For the short-term forecast there are two items of concern.
First, another round of strong and gusty offshore winds. An upper
trough currently over western Canada is forecast to drop south and
over the Great Basin by late Tuesday. This will result in rapid
steepening of surface pressure gradients from the Great Basin to
the California coast Tuesday and Tuesday night as surface high
pressure builds to our north and east. North to northeast winds
are forecast to begin increasing across the North Bay around
midday Tuesday and then south into the East Bay by late that
afternoon. Winds are expected to be strongest in the hills and
will likely peak on Tuesday night and then taper off by late
Wednesday morning. Another round of wind advisories will likely be
needed, but probably for only the North and East Bay Hills as
this upcoming offshore wind event will almost certainly not be as
strong or widespread as the event currently coming to an end. Will
wait until the current Wind Advisories expire before issuing
Advisories for the next event. It should be noted that the 00Z
models trended slightly lower with winds speeds for the
Tuesday/Wednesday wind event. Of course, another round of strong
offshore winds will result in renewed fire weather concerns. See
the Fire Weather Discussion below for details.

The second short-term concern involves locally cold overnight
temperatures starting tonight. The airmass currently in place over
our area is not particularly cold for this time of year. However,
the airmass is very dry which will allow for robust overnight
cooling once winds subside. Overnight lows tonight in the coolest
interior valleys tonight of the North Bay, as well as the
valleys of southern Monterey County, are forecast to be in the
low to mid 30s. Patchy frost is likely in these areas for a few
hours around sunrise Tuesday morning. Stronger winds on Tuesday
night will help hold temps up, but then once winds subside on
Wednesday the stage will be set for two of three more cold nights
in the interior valleys for the remainder of the week. These
frosty nights is the primary forecast concern for the long range
forecast from Wednesday night through Friday night.

Otherwise, models are in agreement in maintaining a high amplitude
ridge just off the West Coast through the week and into next
weekend. This will mean sunny and mild days with high temperatures
mostly in the upper 60s and 70s, along with the aforementioned
cool, and locally frosty, nights. As long as this pattern
persists, rain chances will be nil.

.AVIATION...as of 11:03 AM PDT Monday...For 18z tafs. VFR through
the period except for MVFR to IFR conditions in the North Bay due
to wildfire smoke. Visibility down to 3/4 SM has been observed at
KSTS late this morning. Winds have eased since yesterday with
light offshore flow. Winds will eventually turn onshore late this
afternoon at the terminals near SF and Monterey Bay. The HRRR
brings increasing smoke from nearby wildfires into the region late
this afternoon and evening, continuing overnight. Less confident
on how thick the smoke will be and whether it will mix down to the
surface.

Vicinity of KSFO...VFR. Variable but predominately southeast winds
continuing into the early afternoon. Winds turning onshore late
this afternoon 10-15 kt. Smoke aloft will likely increase late
this afternoon and evening.

SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR with SE winds at KSNS and onshore at
KMRY into the early afternoon hours. Becoming onshore at KSNS as
well by 21z around 10 kt. Smoke may drift south to the terminals
this evening and overnight tonight.

.FIRE WEATHER...As of 8:50 AM PDT Monday...Brief update for the
morning...Red Flag Warning will be allowed to expire at 11 AM.
Will let some breathing room between the current Red Flag Warning
and the next offshore flow event Tuesday into Wednesday. Will
coordinate with neighboring offices and agency partners before
issuing the next Red Flag Warning. Putting this next round into
context it will be similar to event number 1 of last week and not
as strong as event number 2. Stay tuned....

Previous discussion...Models continue to forecast another
offshore wind event from midday Tuesday through Wednesday morning
(the third event over a 7 day period). Models indicate that winds
will begin to increase in the North Bay Hills starting around
midday Tuesday and then develop south into the East Bay Hills by
late that afternoon. North to northeast winds are forecast to peak
between Tuesday evening and late Tuesday night and then taper off
on Wednesday morning. This next offshore wind event is not
expected to be as strong as the event just now winding down. Winds
in the hills of the North and East Bay are expected to be in the
25 to 35 mph range, gusting between 45 and 65 mph, with isolated
higher gusts on the higher peaks of the North Bay. Compared to the
current event, this upcoming offshore wind event will not have as
much upper level support, and strong winds are not expected to
mix down to lower elevations except for isolated locations.
Finally, this upcoming event will be of much shorter duration
compared to the event just now ending. In any case, winds will
easily be strong enough to generate critical fire weather
conditions when paired with very low relative humidity. Humidity
values will increase only marginally prior to the next event, and
mainly at the lower elevations. Humidity is forecast to quickly
decrease once again late Tuesday into Tuesday night as the next
round of offshore winds sweeps across the region. So it's likely
another round of Red Flag Warnings will be issued for the North
and East Bay Hills at a minimum. Will let the current round of Red
Flag Warnings expire before issuing any new Fire Weather Watches
or Red Flag Warnings.

.MARINE...As of 8:44 AM PDT Monday...Light to moderate winds over
the coastal waters today. Locally stronger winds will be possible
along the immediate coast near gaps and passes in the coastal
terrain. Locally breezy conditions will re- develop over the
northern outer waters late tonight and into Tuesday afternoon
before diminishing. Light to moderate north to northeast winds
will then persist through mid week before turning back out of the
northwest into the weekend. A longer period northwest swell will
arrive to the waters today with the swell period then gradually
decreasing throughout the week. Light moderate period southerly
swell will also persist through the forecast period.
