Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area
959 AM PST Thu Jan 10 2019

.SYNOPSIS...Dry conditions with mild temperatures through
Thursday night. Three weather systems are forecast to impact the
region starting on Friday and continuing through early next week,
bringing periods of rain and locally gusty winds. Longer range
forecast models indicate unsettled weather will continue well into
next week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...as of 09:22 AM PST Thursday...Low clouds and patchy
fog, dense at times, continue to impact many coastal areas as well
as the valleys this morning with light winds and abundant low
level moisture in place. Look for conditions to improve through
late morning as the stratus and fog mix out giving way to partly
cloud conditions this afternoon. With that said, the ongoing
short range forecast remains on track. Have made slight
modifications to the QPF (rainfall amounts) for our upcoming
system on Friday/Friday night as the high resolution models are
now capturing the system better. The end result, have lowered
rainfall totals from this system with urban areas likely to pick
up between 0.10" to 0.50" and 0.75" to 2.00" in the coastal ranges
and North Bay Mountains. It is worth noting that some of the
forecast guidance is even showing amounts less than 0.10" for
locations such as Monterey, Salinas and inland rain shadowed
valleys including San Jose.

.PREV DISCUSSION...As of 2:51 AM PST Thursday...One storm system
down, but several more to go over the next seven days.

Ample low level moisture from recent rains has resulted in fog
around the region, some of it locally dense. Fog is currently
impacting portions of the immediate coastline, but more so across
the inland valleys. Several automated stations have reported
reduced visibility due to fog with a few less than one quarter of
a mile. There will be pockets of dense fog, but conf is not high
enough for widespread dense fog to warrant a dense fog advisory.
Once the morning fog dissipates drier and milder conditions will
develop around the Bay Area Thursday. Today will likely end up
being a nice day as weak ridging develops ahead of the next
system.

Speaking of the next system, it is roughly 700 miles west of the
Bay Area. This system will continue to move eastward over the next
24 hours. Previous model runs showed a splitting system with a
highly amplified jet/long wave pattern. The latest 00Z model run
is no different leading to some uncertainty as one upper low
drifts northeast of the region and another heads south to SoCal.
So what does this mean for the Bay Area? Another round of rain,
but SoCal may take the brunt of the storm. None the less, rain
will return to the region beginning Friday afternoon and lasting
through Saturday morning. The coast and coastal mountains will
see the highest rainfall totals at 1-2" in the hills and 0.5-1"
lower elevations. Inland areas will see less at 0.25-0.75". Some
rain shadowing will be possible. Winds will be gusty with this
system, but not as strong as the previous system.

Drier weather re-develops Saturday afternoon through early
Saturday night. Another system begins to slowly move eastward
Saturday night into Sunday morning bringing more rain to the
region. Rain returns Sunday afternoon and will continue through
Monday night. There are differences among the medium range models
regarding rainfall amounts, but it does appear this system may
have a little moisture to work with. Up to 4" of rain will be
possible in the Santa Lucias if everything lines up - 1-3" across
other coastal mountains and 0.5-1.5" elsewhere.

Now the forecast gets interesting as a stronger system
(potentially strongest of the lot) will impact the region Tuesday
into Wednesday. Details vary from ECMWF,GFS,CAN, but they all show
decent rain Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night. Latest
Atmospheric River guidance puts IVT values in the moderate
category.

No end in the active pattern as yet another system is forecast
Thursday and Friday with similar IVT values. Needless to say the
storm door remains open.

Lastly, none of these systems appear to be overly cold, but snow
levels will bounce around 5-7k feet. Therefore, depending on
exact track of each system some wet snow may mix in and accumulate
over the highest peaks of the Santa Lucias/S Gabilan Range.

Side note and weather geek moment - interesting to look at the entire
Northern Pacific Basin satellite imagery. A parade of storms
continues to march across the Pacific. Analysis shows some of the
surface lows have pressures less than 940 mb. Additionally, winds
in excess of 60 kts and waves greater than 45 ft have been
observed.

.AVIATION...As of 09:59 AM PST Thursday...for 18Z TAFs. Areas of
low clouds and fog developed in the early morning hours, resulting
in LIFR conditions at a handful of TAF sites. As of the 18Z TAF
publication time, there have been signs of gradual improvement at
OAK and SJC. As the morning progresses, do expect to see
visibilities improve with an eventual transition to VFR
conditions. Can't rule out a stubborn site or two could see lower
visibilities through the noon hour. Winds are forecast to be
rather light through the day. The next approaching system will
begin to impact the northern TAF sites by the latter half of the
valid TAF period.

Vicinity of KSFO...IFR/LIFR ceilings/visibilities are expected to
gradually improve over the next several hours, with the eventual
transition to VFR conditions around mid-day as the fog mixes-out.
Winds are expected to remain rather light through the day. The
next system will approach by the end of the TAF period with the
chance of light rain/rain showers around mid-morning Friday.

SFO Bridge Approach...Rather similar to the SFO terminal at the
present, but do think the terminal will mix-out a bit before the
approach, given the solid stratus/fog bank covering the entire
southern half of the Bay.

Monterey Bay Terminals...Some lingering morning fog impacting SNS
as of the 18Z TAF publication time, but do expect a transition to
VFR conditions within the next hour or so. Winds are forecast to
remain rather light at MRY today, while SNS can expect some
southeast breezes through mid-day, and resuming again overnight.

.MARINE...as of 09:22 AM PST Thursday...Winds will increase and
back towards the southeast through Friday ahead of the next storm
system. Hazardous conditions from squared seas will exist today
with the main threat transitioning to stronger winds overnight
tonight. A gale watch is in effect for the northern and outer
waters with the anticipation of even stronger winds arriving
tomorrow. A now moderate west swell will continue to taper off
today.
