.SYNOPSIS...Cloudy skies today ahead of a cold front that is
tracking eastward toward the Bay Area. Light to moderate rainfall
is expected late Saturday and into Sunday morning. Cooler
temperatures are forecast behind the front through Tuesday.
Intermittent isolated rain may pop-up, but will be light and short
lived as drier northern air should dominate. The next opportunity
for rain is with the next system that approaches the California
coast late on Tuesday setting up a wet Christmas holiday.

.DISCUSSION...as of 01:42 PM PST Saturday...A generally mild and
seasonable day today around the region. Temperatures are in the
mid-to-upper 50s. Skies are overcast with higher level stratus
clouds out ahead of a cold front that will bring rain and strong
winds to the area.
The cold front will continue to travel east and pass over the Bay
Area and Central Coast tonight. Light rain is expected ahead of
the front on Saturday evening. Light to moderate rainfall with
higher rain rates can be expected in the North Bay this evening,
and impacting locations southward in the early hours of Sunday
morning. Models are still trending 0.5"-1.0", with the higher
amounts closer to the coastline, and isolated areas of elevated
terrain in the North Bay Mountains and Santa Lucia Range seeing
closer to 1.5" to 2+" of rain. Breezy wind conditions are also
forecast ahead of the storm. Gusts from 20-30 mph, particularly in
higher terrain, is possible, with areas of the East Bay Mountains
and the Diablo Range, Mountains of San Benito County, the Santa
Lucia Range, and interior Monterey County could see gusts around
50 mph. It is for these southern areas of our region that we have
issued a Wind Advisory from 7 PM PST to 7 AM PST Sunday morning.
Winds should subside once the front passes through. Lingering
light rain is expected behind the front, but should begin to taper
in the afternoon and be done by the evening.
Between Sunday night and Tuesday afternoon, a light pop-up rain
cannot be completely ruled out, but cold, dry air be brought over
the Bay Area provides a break in the rain before Christmas. However,
that cooler air from the North will drop morning low temperatures on
Monday into the low 40s upper 30s, with localized areas of the North
Bay Valleys seeing near freezing mid-30s. Patchy frost may be
possible. Afternoon temperatures will be in the mid-to-low 50s.
We have been getting calls from our weather observer located in the
North Pole asking about flight paths for Tuesday evening. Models are
showing more and more agreement that the next weather system will
drop down from the North Pacific. That system is expected to
bring the next chances of rain for the Bay Area and the Central
Coast. Exact timing and amount of rain are still to be determined
depending on the directional path of the low as it moves
southward. However, it is looking more and more like a rainy
Christmas holiday.

.AVIATION...as of 10:03 AM PST Saturday...For 18z tafs. Patchy
fog and low clouds persist in parts of the North and East Bay this
morning. High clouds continue to stream overhead. Elsewhere, VFR
conditions prevail. Patchy fog will further thin and dissipate
late this morning with VFR expected this afternoon. Southeast
winds will prevail today with speeds generally around 10 kt. A
frontal boundary will approach the region this evening with
increasing south to southeasterly winds. Winds aloft will also
increase creating LLWS concerns tonight. The frontal boundary will
bring a period of moderate rain to the terminals early Sunday
morning. Cigs will lower as the front approaches becoming MVFR
early Sunday. Winds behind the front will switch to west to
southwesterly and gradually decrease on Sunday morning. Winds
aloft will decrease behind the front reducing the LLWS threat.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR with high clouds prevailing through the
evening. Southeast winds with speeds around 10 kt expected
through the afternoon. Southeast winds increasing tonight with
gusts 20-25 kt after 06z. Winds aloft will also increase and LLWS
will be a concern tonight during lulls in gusts at the terminal.
Rain expected to reach the terminal between 10-12z Sunday morning
with a period of moderate rain 12-16z. Low clouds will increase
tonight with MVFR cigs developing as the rain arrives.
SFO Bridge Approach...Same as KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR conditions prevailing this afternoon
and evening. Southerly winds will strengthen today with speeds
7-12 kt expected. SE winds increasing overnight, especially for
KSNS where gusts to 30 kt are possible. Winds increasing aloft
will create some LLWS tonight. Rain expected to reach the
terminals 12-13z Sunday morning. Cigs lowering to MVFR as the rain
arrives.

.MARINE...as of 01:36 PM PST Saturday...Southerly winds will
increase across the waters today ahead of a cold front set to move
through later this afternoon through Sunday morning. This frontal
system will bring periods of rain in addition to near gale-force
gusts. Winds will turn northwest behind the front on Sunday
before winds diminish in the afternoon. The combination of
moderate northwest swell and gusty winds will generate hazardous
seas conditions across the waters into Sunday morning. Long
period northwest swell will gradually decrease in height and
period throughout the weekend. Another long period northwest
swell will arrive mid-week.
