.SYNOPSIS...Gusty, dry northerly winds are forecast region-wide
on Monday, with strongest winds expected in the hills. These winds
will result in increased fire weather concerns due to continued
very dry fuels. A vigorous cold front will spread rain and gusty
winds from north to south through the region from Tuesday
afternoon through Tuesday night. Cool, showery conditions, along
with lowering snow levels, are forecast for Wednesday. Showers
will taper off from north to south on Thanksgiving Day, but very
cool temperatures will persist. There is a potential for
nighttime freezing temperatures later in the week once
precipitation ends and skies clear.

.DISCUSSION...As of 9:10 PM PST Sunday...Sunday was another
tranquil weather day with mild temperatures and light winds. This
will be the last quiet weather day our area will see for a while.
The remainder of Thanksgiving week will feature a quick bout of
dry gusty winds, followed by widespread soaking rains, then
cold/showery weather with low snow levels, a chance of
thunderstorms, and finally the potential for freezing night time
temperatures late in the week.
Evening water vapor satellite imagery reveals a shortwave trough
approaching the coast of the Pacific Northwest. This system is
forecast to dive quickly to the southeast and into the Great Basin
by tomorrow. As it does so, it will drag a dry cold front through
our area late tonight and Monday morning. Northerly winds will
increase behind the front from north to south on Monday morning,
and blustery conditions will develop in most areas by midday.
Strongest winds are expected Monday afternoon and early evening
when gusts of 35 to 45 mph are likely in the hills/mountains. At
the coast and in the valleys, wind gusts of 20 to 30 mph are
forecast with locally higher gusts near the ocean. A cooler
airmass will arrive behind the front and high temperatures
tomorrow will be anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees cooler than today.
The airmass will also be dry behind the front, which means
increased fire danger as gusty winds combine with low humidity
and dry fuels (see Fire Weather Discussion below for details).
Winds will gradually subside in all areas by late Monday night.
Confidence remains high that our region will see widespread
rainfall late Tuesday and Tuesday night as a vigorous cold system
from the Gulf of Alaska takes aim and northern and central
California. Models have been remarkably consistent and in good
agreement with this system. About the only change has been a
gradual increase in precipitation totals. Timing of the cold
frontal rain band remains unchanged, with rain expected to spread
across the North Bay Tuesday afternoon, south through the rest of
the SF Bay Area late Tuesday afternoon and early evening (expect
impacts to the evening commute) and and through the Monterey Bay
Area mid to late evening. This looks to be a dynamic system
capable of producing at least a brief period of heavy rain along
the frontal boundary late Tuesday. Also, strong and gusty south to
southwest winds are expected for a few hours prior to frontal
passage late Tuesday afternoon and evening. Strongest winds will
likely be north of the Bay Area, closer to a deep surface low that
is expected to track near the CA/OR border (973 mb low per the
00Z NAM). But the NAM also develops a wave along the front in our
area on Tuesday evening which may locally enhance winds. Winds may
reach advisory levels for a brief time prior to frontal passage
with wind gusts up to 50 mph possible. But because of the short
duration of these strong winds, issuance of a Wind Advisory is not
currently anticipated.
A cold upper low will drop in behind the front, resulting in
widespread showers and possible thunderstorms late Tuesday night
through Wednesday. Thunderstorm potential is highest over the
coastal waters and near the coast on Tuesday night and Wednesday
morning and then inland by Wednesday afternoon.
Scattered showers will persist Wednesday night, but shower
activity is expected to taper off from north to south on
Thanksgiving Day as the cold upper low sinks south. Rainfall
totals from Tuesday through Thursday are forecast to range from
0.50-1.00" in most areas, with upwards of 1.50" in the coastal
ranges, particularly in the Santa Lucias.
Snow levels are forecast to lower to 2500-3000 feet by late
Wednesday and then drop as low as 2000 feet by Thanksgiving. Most
precipitation will be tapering off before the lowest snow levels
develop. In any case, snowfall accumulation is likely above 3000
feet from Wednesday through Thursday. Greatest potential for snow
accumulation is on the highest peaks in the Santa Cruz Mountains
and southern Diablo Range, and especially the Santa Lucia
Mountains.
Cold temperatures are forecast for mid/late week. By Wednesday and
Thanksgiving, highs will mostly be in the upper 40s to mid 50s.
Overnight lows will likely range from the mid 30s to mid 40s as
long as clouds and precipitation are present, but then drop into
the upper 20s to lower 30s in most inland valley locations once
skies clear, which will most likely be Thursday night. We may need
to consider freeze warnings for later in the week.
In the longer range, there is a potential for a wet system
approaching from the west to impact our area by next weekend, but
models disagree on how far west the system will proceed by then,
so uncertainty remains.

.AVIATION...as of 10:00 PM PST Sunday...For 06z tafs. VFR
conditions through the period. Satellite and surface obs have
reported patchy low cloud development along the San Mateo
coastline. Stratus will expand somewhat overnight but should
mainly remain along the coast. The TAF site which may see some
temporary cigs is KMRY for a few hours overnight. The other sites
should remain VFR. Late tonight, a dry cold front will move
through and bring increasing northerly winds. Some low level wind
shear is expected tomorrow morning before gusty winds mix down to
the surface by late morning to early afternoon. It will remain
gusty through the afternoon and into the early evening, with
widespread gusts 20-30 kt and locally higher possible.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR. Stratus has formed along the coastal side
of the Peninsula but is not expected to move inland much tonight.
West winds around 10 kt will continue overnight and then increase
early Monday morning. West winds will continue to increase
through the afternoon with gusts 30-35 kt developing by 16z and up
to and possibly slightly exceeding 35 kt during the afternoon.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...Mainly VFR through the period. Patchy low
clouds forming this evening and overnight. Temporary IFR cigs
are possible near KMRY overnight and around sunrise. Light and
variable winds overnight. W to NW winds will develop earlier than
normal Monday morning and become gusty during the afternoon, with
gusts around 25 kt.

.FIRE WEATHER...As of 8:55 AM PST Sunday...Expect rather poor
overnight humidity recoveries in the hills once again tonight, but
winds will remain light for most of the night. A dry cold front
will sweep across the district from north to south late tonight
and Monday morning, and northerly winds will quickly increase
behind the front. This continues to look like an atypical offshore
wind event. Instead of strong winds being focused primarily
across the North and East Bay Hills, gusty wind are expected to
develop region-wide by midday Monday and continue through Monday
evening. Strongest winds are expected in the hills/mountains
where gusts will likely range from 35 to 45 mph. Breezy conditions
are also expected at lower elevations with gusts up to 30 mph
likely, with locally higher gusts near the coast. Most recent
models don't dry out the airmass quite as much as previous model
runs. Minimum RH values will likely be in the 20s and 30s in most
areas on Monday, except locally down into the teens across
southern interior locations. Winds are expected to decrease at
lower elevations on Monday evening, but remain gusty in the hills
later into Monday night. Red Flag Warnings have NOT been issued,
primarily because of the short duration of the event. However,
near critical fire weather conditions will likely occur given
continued very dry fuels. Moderate humidity recoveries are
expected Monday night and winds will subside by Tuesday morning.
Another brief round of even stronger winds is expected by late
Tuesday afternoon and evening, but these winds will be from the
southwest ahead of a potent cold front and will occur in tandem
with wetting rains across the entire district. Showers and
possible thunderstorms will follow late Tuesday night into
Wednesday, with showers tapering off on Thanksgiving. Most areas
are expected to pick up between 0.50 and 1.00" of rainfall with
this upcoming system, with locally up to 1.50" in the hills. This
rain event will go a long way toward ending our current prolonged
fire season.

increase over the waters tonight as a dry cold front approaches.
Gale force gusts are expected over the outer waters from early
Monday morning through Monday evening. Winds will then diminish on
Tuesday ahead of a fast moving frontal system set to move through
Tuesday night. Winds will re- strengthen Tuesday afternoon and
briefly turn southerly ahead of the front before switching back to
the west to northwest behind the front. This system will bring
widespread precipitation over the waters along with possible
scattered thunderstorms Tuesday evening and into Wednesday
morning. Additionally, a large moderate period northwest swell
will arrive starting Tuesday night. The combination of gusty winds
and large northwest swell will create hazardous seas across the
waters.
