Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area
945 PM PST Sat Nov 23 2019
.SYNOPSIS...Quiet weather will continue through the rest of the
weekend with seasonably mild afternoons and cool nights. Gusty
north winds and lowering humidity is forecast for Monday after a
dry cold front moves through. This will result in a brief period
of heightened fire weather concerns on Monday and Monday night.
Clouds and humidity increase late Monday night into early Tuesday.
Rain is forecast to develop in the North Bay Tuesday afternoon
and then spread southward through the remainder of the forecast
area by late Tuesday evening. Cool, showery weather will follow
Tuesday night into Wednesday, along with a slight chance of
thunderstorms. Shower activity will taper off on Thanksgiving, but
cool days and cold nights will be the main forecast concern
Thursday into Friday.
&&
.DISCUSSION...As of 8:55 PM PST Saturday...After a mild weekend,
a very active weather pattern is expected during Thanksgiving
week, starting with dry offshore winds and fire weather concerns
on Monday, followed by widespread rainfall Tuesday afternoon and
evening. Unsettled weather will then continue with showers,
possible thunderstorms, and lowering snow levels on Wednesday.
Showers will taper off on Thanksgiving as a cold airmass settles
over the area, setting the stage for possible nighttime freezing
temperatures later in the week.
Skies remain mostly clear this evening. Dewpoints are generally a
few degrees lower than 24 hours ago. However, just enough moisture
remains in some coastal valleys for potential fog development
overnight, especially near Monterey Bay and in the Salinas Valley
where patchy late night dense fog is possible. Fog may also form
locally in North Bay Valleys by daybreak Sunday. Clear skies and a
dry airmass above the boundary layer will mean cool temperatures
once again tonight with patchy frost possible in the coldest
interior valleys for a few hours around sunrise Sunday. Sunday is
expected to be a day much like today. Light offshore flow will
continue to maintain dry conditions with mild temperatures. Highs
will mostly be in the 60s and lower 70s.
An upper trough is forecast to drop southeast from the Pacific
Northwest into the Great Basin on Monday. An associated dry
surface cold front is expected to sweep through our area early on
Monday. Gusty northerly winds will develop quickly behind the
front on Monday morning and persist through the afternoon and
evening hours. These gusty offshore winds will bring an even
drier airmass into our area on Monday. Gusty dry winds, combined
with low humidity and fuels that are unusually dry for this time
of year, will mean heightened fire weather concerns Monday and
into Monday night (see Fire Weather Discussion below). Unlike our
typical offshore wind events that primarily focus on the hills of
the North and East Bay, Monday's event will be widespread with
gusty winds expected across our entire forecast area. Strongest
winds will be in the hills where gusts up to 40 mph are likely,
with locally higher gusts possible on the highest peaks. In
addition, cold advection on Monday will allow higher momentum air
aloft to mix down to near sea level. So, valleys and coastal areas
will likely see gusts of 25 to 30 mph. Winds will subside near
sea level after sunset Monday, but will remain gusty in the hills
well into Monday night. Winds will decrease in all areas by
Tuesday morning.
Attention then turns to a second system approaching from the
northwest that is set to bring our area its first widespread
soaking rains of the season. This system will have a trajectory
farther to the west compared to the Monday system and will have
entrained ample moisture from another, much wetter system north
of Hawaii. Models have been consistent and in good agreement
regarding the timing of precipitation. Rain is forecast to spread
across the North Bay on Tuesday afternoon and then south across
the remainder of our forecast area on Tuesday evening. This looks
to be a robust and dynamic front that will be capable of producing
a brief period of heavy rain just prior to frontal passage late
Tuesday. Also, the latest NAM indicates a brief period of gusty
southerly winds just ahead of the front late Tuesday afternoon and
evening.
A cold and unstable airmass will follow the front, resulting in
showers, possible isolated thunderstorms, and lowering snow
levels late Tuesday night through Wednesday. Snow levels are
projected to drop to 2500-3000 feet by late Wednesday. Snow levels
will then drop as low as 2000 feet by Thanksgiving as a cold upper
low settles over northern California. But shower activity is
expected to taper off on Thanksgiving, which will lower snowfall
accumulation potential in the higher hills, especially in northern
portions of our area where moisture will be limited. In any case,
accumulating snowfall is certainly possible Wednesday and Thursday
in the hills above 3000 feet, especially from the Santa Cruz
Mountains and southern Diablo Range southward. The highest
potential for accumulating snow will be in the Santa Lucia
Mountains.
Regarding rainfall totals, models have been gradually trending
wetter next week. Rain totals from Tuesday through Thursday are
now projected to range from 0.50 to 1.00" across much of our
area, with locally up to 1.50" in the Santa Cruz Mountains and
Santa Lucias. More than half of next week's rain will likely fall
late Tuesday with the cold frontal passage.
The cold airmass with next week's system will mean chilly daytime
temperatures, with highs mainly held into the 50s on Tuesday, and
only in the upper 40s to mid 50s on Wednesday and Thanksgiving.
Overnight lows will mostly be in the mid 30s to mid 40s and likely
won't reach freezing until after precipitation and cloud cover ends
later in the week. Once skies clear there is a potential for
freezing late night and early morning temperatures with overnight
lows possibly falling into the upper 20s in the coldest inland
valleys. These cold temperatures will most likely occur starting
Thursday night, but possibly as early as Wednesday Night in the
North Bay Valleys if there is sufficient clearing. Cold nights
will continue through Friday night.
Longer range models show that aforementioned wet system north of
Hawaii edging eastward to about 140W by next weekend, where it
will direct a plume of very moist air towards the West Coast. Both
the GFS and ECMWF indicate the potential for significant rainfall
in northern California by late next weekend. But much uncertainty
exists this far out regarding the location and timing of
precipitation potential.
&&
.AVIATION...as of 9:46 PM PST Saturday...For 06z tafs. VFR
conditions with clear skies and light offshore winds overnight.
Could see some patchy fog and/or mist form in the North Bay
valleys around sunrise Sunday. Otherwise, VFR expected through the
TAF period at all sites. A few high clouds will move overhead
tomorrow afternoon. Models do bring some patchy stratus to the
coast on Sunday evening, but not expecting cigs to form at this
time through the period. Winds will become onshore Sunday
afternoon.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR with light winds overnight. Cannot rule out
some haze Sunday morning due to trapped pollutants. Winds becoming
west northwest 10-15 kt around 22z Sunday afternoon.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR with light southeast winds overnight.
Onshore winds Sunday afternoon 5-10 kt. Patchy stratus is likely
to form near KMRY Sunday evening.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...As of 8:45 PM PST Saturday...Dry and seasonably
warm weather is forecast through Sunday, which will continue to
dry the fine fuels. Latest fuels charts show most areas at record
dry levels given the dry fall. Attention is now on Monday for an
expected atypical wind event. Scenario will be more of a dry cold
front versus typical offshore wind event. Gusty north winds arrive
in the hills Monday morning but humidity starts out reasonably
high. Burst of winds will travel north to south through the
district on Monday morning with lowering humidity, especially for
the inland hills. This should be an equal opportunity event as the
synoptic front/forcing will drive winds across all locations from
the North Bay to Central Coast. Winds of most concern appear to
be around Mt Hamilton and the Santa Cruz mountains then shifting
to the higher terrain of San Benito and Monterey county (Los
Padres Forest) on Monday afternoon/early evening. Models show
burst of downslope/Northeast winds along Highway 1 around Big Sur
later Monday afternoon/evening. Monday will not be a day for any
burning due to winds and unstable airmass aloft. Any ignitions
will spread rapidly under these atmospheric conditions. Limiting
factors will be slightly higher humidity than past offshore wind
events, and short duration of event. Humidity will rise Monday
night and most strong winds should end by late Monday night. Rapid
increase in humidity forecast for Tuesday and wetting rains are
forecast to spread across all locations by late Tuesday evening.
Showery and cool weather will then continue through Wednesday,
with showers tapering off Thanksgiving Day. Longer range models
hint at potential more rain by late next weekend, especially in
the northern portion of the district.
&&
.MARINE...As of 8:34 PM PST Saturday...Generally light northerly
winds will continue tonight across the waters as surface high
pressure sits over the eastern Pacific with a trough in place
along the California coast. Winds will increase on Sunday and
become stronger through Monday behind a dry cold front. Gale force
gusts will be possible over the outer waters on Monday and Monday
evening. The combination of increasing winds and moderate swell
will create hazardous seas conditions across the waters,
particularly for smaller vessels. A cold front will also sweep
through the waters on Tuesday and Tuesday night bringing showers,
a chance of thunderstorms, and gusty winds. Rough seas with high
wind waves and a moderate period northwest swell will develop next
week.
