.SYNOPSIS...A cooling trend continues today through the weekend
as an early season trough sets up over Northern California. Gusty
west winds to continue over the ocean and along the coast with
onshore winds in place. Temperatures remain below normal at least
through Monday then gradually return to near normal by the middle
of next week.

.DISCUSSION...as of 3:11 AM PDT Friday...Widespread cloud
coverage early this morning with portions of the South Bay still
remaining clear at this hour. The northern portion of the Bay Area
is under the influence of increasing West/Northwest onshore winds
while the South Bay and Central Coast is still feeling the
effects of cool southerly flow that moved up the coast. The buoys
at Pt Arena and Bodega Bay have recently turned WNW as the first
boundary of cool air starts to press southward. The synoptic
cooling aloft has essentially wiped out the marine layer with
cloud decks around 1500 feet and temps cooling with height, even
in the hills for the first time in days.
The nam boundary layer theta-e clearly shows the next boundary
moving past the Golden Gate by midday and down into the Monterey
Bay region later this afternoon. Expect to see a clearing trend
from north to south as drier air filters in and this trend is
already seen up near Cape Mendocino.
The long talked about upper trough that is responsible for the
noted cooling trend is finally taking aim at Northern California.
The main impacts for the Bay Area will be an abrupt reminder that
its almost October as inland highs struggle to warm into the 70s
and cooler autumn nights arrive. The next boundary may squeeze
some drizzle out along the hills of the Central Coast Saturday
morning as synoptic and orographic lift try and squeeze out the
moist boundary layer along the hills of Big Sur early Saturday
morning.
Otherwise look for crisp blue skies Saturday morning turning
partly cloudy by afternoon as cold air cumulus clouds build up
across the Bay Area hills. At first glance some stronger winds
would be expected given the sharp trough aloft. To be sure, the
model winds look to be slightly underdone. However given the time
of year and lack of inland warming not expecting strong winds on
Saturday for the inland valleys. However strong winds over the
ocean will bring some gusty northwest winds to the coastal beaches
and through the Golden Gate Saturday afternoon. Highs on Saturday
will be isothermal with 60s coast, mid 60s bay and low to mid 70s
inland.
Will need to watch a reinforcing shortwave rotating around the
longwave trough Sunday afternoon. Latest nam model generates a few
showers over the North Coast and down towards the North Bay hills
Sunday afternoon. However, best chances are likely over the higher
terrain of Lake County northward. That being said an isolated
shower on Sunday afternoon over the Napa/Sonoma hills may need to
be added for future forecasts. Expect lots of shallow cumulus over
the ocean Sunday afternoon but most cells should collapse as they
move towards the coast. The bulk of the Bay Area will see highs
from the mid 60s to lower 70s Sunday afternoon with cold air
cumulus over the hills once again due to the very cold air aloft.
By Monday the Bay Area will be square on the backside of the main
upper trough with dry northerly flow over the region while any
residual precip chances linger over the Sierra.
A quick glance at the 500 mb pattern for next week initially may
look unfavorable with cool troughing over the region. However
upon closer inspection a weak thermal trough may develop along the
coast with light northerly flow, mainly clear skies and little or
no marine layer. This would bring seasonable daytime highs from
the upper 60s to mid 70s most areas with cool overnight lows in
the 40s to lower 50s.

.AVIATION...As of 10:50 PM PDT Thursday...Strong southerly flow
continues along the coast. Low clouds have been expanding this
evening and is expected to spread into SFO/OAK and the approach
after 09Z. Models showing late burnoff for SFO Friday which is
reasonable with a strong southerly flow.
Vicinity of KSFO...Southerly flow should keep stratus out until
after 09Z. Becoming MVFR with bases 1200-1500 feet. Late burnoff
of 19Z or later is expected Friday which is in agreement with
model forecasts.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...MVFR cigs over Santa Cruz County and the
MRY Bay spreading MRY after 07Z. Cigs clearing out of the southern
MRY Bay after 18Z returning early in the evening.

.MARINE...as of 02:31 AM PDT Friday...Southerly winds will prevail
this evening with locally gusty conditions near Point Pinos,
Pedro Point, and in the northern San Francisco Bay. Winds will
switch to northwest tonight, increasing on Friday and Saturday as
low pressure develops over the Great Basin. Gale force winds or
gusts are possible for the northern outer waters by late Friday.
A moderate northwest swell will persist, creating hazardous sea
conditions for small vessels.
