.SYNOPSIS...An unseasonably potent storm system is forecast to
bring widespread rainfall and possible thunderstorms to the region
Wednesday through Thursday. After a brief break on Friday,
another storm system will move through the region Saturday into
Saturday night. Wet, unsettled weather conditions potentially
continue into early next week as well.

.DISCUSSION...as of 02:34 PM PDT Tuesday...Mid/high level clouds
continue to stream inland over the region, especially across the
North Bay, this afternoon in advance of a developing mid/upper
level trough. This has helped to keep temperatures down across the
northern portion of the region where temperatures are 5 to 10
degrees cooler compared to this time yesterday. Otherwise, mainly
dry weather conditions prevail.
All attention turns to the aforementioned mid/upper level system
that is forecast to approach the Pacific Northwest and northern
California coast late tonight into Wednesday. Light rain is forecast
to develop over the northern portion of the region beginning late
tonight as a frontal boundary develops and slowly shifts southward.
By sunrise Wednesday, light rain will be possible along coastal
areas before becoming more widespread early Wednesday afternoon.
Rainfall will also increase in intensity Wednesday afternoon and
evening over much of the region as the core of the upper level low
nears the northern California coast. PWAT values in excess of 1.25"
offshore will advect inland across our region and result in moderate
rainfall (locally heavy in the North Bay and coastal ranges) during
this time frame as well. Southerly winds will also increase ahead of
the approaching frontal system with gusts to around 40 MPH near the
coast and in the hills/higher peaks. There will also be the
potential for thunderstorms Wednesday night as a colder, more
unstable air mass moves inland across central California.
The frontal boundary is projected to push south of the Central Coast
by early Thursday morning, yet the parent mid/upper level low will
sweep inland during the day Thursday. This will result in another
round of scattered to widespread rain showers with the potential for
isolated thunderstorms. Given the cold air mass aloft, we cannot
rule out copious amounts of small hail within any of the stronger
convective showers/thunderstorms. Showers may linger into Thursday
night as the main trough shifts inland. With all this said, the
characteristics of this system look more like those from a winter
storm with atmospheric river guidance in line with a weak to briefly
moderate event. Rainfall amounts from Wednesday through Thursday
look to range from 0.50" to 1.00" in most urban locations with 0.25"
to 0.50" in the typically drier and/or rain shadowed locations.
Meanwhile, the North Bay could see amounts of 0.75" to 1.25" with
the coastal ranges and North Bay Mountains potentially exceeding
2.00" (locally upwards of 3.50" in the region's wettest locations).
A weak short-wave ridge will develop in wake of the passing system
on Friday resulting in mainly dry weather conditions. Temperatures
will also warm slightly by Friday afternoon given the increase in
sunshine. The drier weather will be short-lived however as another
upper level system is forecast to bring widespread rainfall to the
region Saturday and Saturday night. This system looks to be a bit
faster and will likely produce less rainfall region-wide, yet still
impressive for this time of year. After a brief break in rainfall
Sunday into early Monday, a third weather system will take aim at
the northern and central California coast. Details with respect to
wind, rainfall amounts and exact timing are less certain at this
time.
All in all, ensemble forecasts project rainfall over the next 5-7
days will potentially exceed 200% of normal for the entire month of
May across much of the region. Folks are urged to stay up to date
with the latest forecast information in the coming days.

.AVIATION...as of 11:05 AM PDT Tuesday...Approaching storm system
is bringing widespread high clouds which is making the extent of
the low clouds difficult to discern. Based on surface
observations and breaks in the high clouds observed on satellite,
low cigs are mixing out this morning with VFR developing at the
terminals. Low clouds will continue to decrease early this
afternoon with VFR through the early evening hours. Winds through
the afternoon will be onshore at 10-15 kt. MVFR conditions
expected to develop by mid- evening at most of the terminals and
continue overnight, though cigs are expected to be higher than
previous nights. The approaching storm system will bring
VCSH/-SHRA beginning tonight and continuing through the end of the
TAF period. Late in the TAF period, southerly to southeasterly
winds will develop and strengthen as the frontal boundary
approaches late Wednesday.
Vicinity of KSFO...A BKN layer persists at the terminal, but VFR
expected to develop shortly and persist through the afternoon.
South to southeasterly winds will develop overnight and
strengthen on Wednesday with gusts to 25kt late in the TAF period.
Rain will begin to intensify late in the TAF.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR expected for the afternoon. Southerly
winds and rain will develop late in the TAF period and intensify
after the period.

.MARINE...as of 09:05 AM PDT Tuesday...Generally light southerly
to westerly winds will continue through Tuesday afternoon. Winds
will back towards the south and strengthen on Wednesday, becoming
gusty through Wednesday night. Winds will shift to westerly on
Thursday and remain breezy following a frontal passage. A mixed
light NW and S swell will persist through the week with steep
fresh southerly swell with the stronger winds on Wednesday.
