.SYNOPSIS...Dry weather conditions and seasonably cool
temperatures will persist through Friday. A major pattern shift
will bring widespread rainfall, strong gusty winds and possible
thunderstorms to the area late Friday night into Saturday.
Lingering showers will continue through the weekend with another
frontal system forecast by the middle of next week.

.DISCUSSION...as of 09:17 PM PST Thursday...The upper level ridge
that has kept the Golden State dry over the past few days
continues to gradually shift to the east this evening. Over the
next 24 hours, a pattern change will unfold as a system begins to
impact the northern half of California, and spreads south on
Saturday. Present infrared satellite imagery is already showing
high clouds increase in coverage in advance of this next system.
For the San Francisco Bay Area and Central California Coast, we
can expect widespread rainfall as well as locally strong winds
beginning late Friday and continuing into Saturday with this first
storm.
There still remains some uncertainty in regard to winds for our
area of the state. The latest incoming GFS and NAM 00Z model
guidance has trended the developing surface low just a bit to the
north from the prior runs. The exact track and associated pressure
gradients of the surface low will dictate the strength of our
surface winds -- a more northerly track and/or weaker gradients
will correspond to weaker surface winds; a low track closer to us
and/or stronger gradients will bring stronger surface winds for
our area. Still waiting on more high resolution guidance to
compute and trickle on in (particularly our in-house WRF model),
so for this evening will hold back on issuing any wind headlines.
If the present model guidance does pan out, would likely need wind
headlines for late tomorrow night to Saturday for the higher
elevations, and even perhaps for some locations along/near sea
level. Will continue to keep a close eye on this evolving system.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 01:56 PM PST Thursday...High clouds are
starting to filter in over northern California, but afternoon
temperatures are still warming into the 50s as of 1 PM. High
clouds overnight should moderate the temperatures somewhat with
overnight lows being warmer than those of the past couple of
nights. Lows should generally be in the mid 30s to mid 40s.
An approaching upper level trough will begin to affect the area on
Friday with increasing clouds and southerly winds. By early
Saturday morning, the North Bay could start to see rain, mainly
along the coast. The main frontal band is forecast to move through
Saturday morning, with gusty southerly winds ahead of and with
the front, and widespread rainfall. Winds will become westerly by
the afternoon, with residual showers persisting into Sunday
morning.
Latest model guidance has backed off the forecast wind speeds
somewhat, at least in the case of the NAM and the locally-run
WRF, while the GFS and Canadian models continue to show very
strong winds. Thus, wind speeds in the grids have been lowered a
little, and will wait another model run to decide about possible
wind advisory issuances. Even so, wind gusts with the front could
still be in the 30 to 40 mph range with higher gusts in the
coastal hills.
Rainfall estimates haven't changed much and still look like 2-3"
in the coastal ranges with locally higher amounts in some areas,
with 0.50-1.50" totals expected in the lower elevations through
Sunday. The heaviest rainfall appears most likely along the main
frontal passage Saturday morning with lingering showers possible
into Sunday. In addition, the cold airmass will allow snow levels
to drop to around 4000 feet, thus there is the potential for snow
accumulation in the higher peaks of the Santa Lucias.
As this system moves eastward, some lingering showers are
possible Sunday night into Monday, especially over the North Bay
as another weak system drops southward. Then, another storm is
then slated to arrive by midweek for additional rain and wind. The
latest model runs of the GFS and ECMWF are showing similar trends
to the 00Z runs, with the GFS being way more bullish with
rainfall for this midweek system than the ECMWF.

.AVIATION...As of 09:25 PM PST Thursday...For 06z tafs. VFR
conditions to prevail through the period with high clouds between
15,000 and 25,000 feet. Winds will remain generally light through
the period aside from locally breezy morning winds down the
Salinas Valley tomorrow. Cigs will begin to lower towards the end
of the taf period.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR with high clouds and light winds. Southerly
winds will begin to increase tomorrow evening along with lowering
cigs. Precip chances will begin early tomorrow morning.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to SFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR with increasing high clouds. Locally
breezy southerly winds down the Salinas Valley in the morning.

become southerly tomorrow and into Saturday ahead of an
approaching storm system. Gale force gusts will be possible
tomorrow night and through the day Saturday. This system will also

waters on Saturday. A larger long period west to northwest swell
is forecast to arrive Saturday night into Sunday.
