...Moderate to heavy snow with gusty northeast winds tonight
through Monday...
.DISCUSSION...Light rain and snow across northwest Montana will
spread south and east today but noticeable downsloping is expected
for larger valleys thus they will remain drier. Light freezing
rain has been reported in the valleys of northwest Montana
overnight and will continue as the main concern of the morning.
The Missoula/Bitterroot valleys eastward will also experience
light rain with near freezing temperatures early this morning but
amounts will be very light. Surface temperatures will warm by
mid morning eliminating the freezing rain threat. Mountain passes
will also see an inch or two of snow through mid day. If you are
traveling this morning watch out for changeable, slippery
roadways.
The cold arctic airmass will begin to affect Marias Pass by this
evening and then shift westward by Sunday. The main changes to the
forecast this update include:
1) Increased wind speeds especially for canyon locations...some of
which should see gusts to 50 mph at times. This in turn lowered
wind chill temperatures, especially between Kalispell and Marias
Pass. Wind chill values could dip below 40 below towards Marias
Pass by late Sunday into Monday.
2) Trended temperatures colder Sunday as the airmass moving into
the region is very deep and with the combination of clouds,
snowfall and winds, temperatures will struggle on Sunday behind
the cold front.
Snow, blowing and drifting snow are still anticipated with this
storm across the area. A period of mixed precipitation with fog
is possible before the colder air begins to flow west of the
Divide this evening. For more information on impacts, see the

A cold and unsettled period is anticipated Tuesday through next
weekend as a trough of low pressure remains in the area. This will
lead to periods of light to moderate snow and cold temperatures.
Temperatures will range from 10 to 20 degrees below normal
throughout the period with snow possible nearly every day,
although forecast models do show Thursday as a mostly dry day.

.AVIATION...Of initial concern this morning will be light
rain/freezing rain for KGPI and KMSO. Air temperatures may be
just above freezing as rain falls but runway temperatures at or
just below freezing may lead to some icy surfaces. Otherwise,
there will be showers around terminal sites today but warming
surface temperatures by late morning will eliminate any freezing
rain threat. Of greater interest will be the arctic front that
will spill over the Divide tonight into Sunday morning bringing
strong northeast/east winds, snow, blowing snow, and reduced
visibility. Timing for the arctic front looks to be around
03/0600Z at KGPI, 11Z at KMSO, and 13Z at KBTM. KSMN may see
occasional snow on Sunday but arctic air will remain to the north.
