Upper air pattern consists of a closed 500 mb over NW KS in a deep
trough over the plains this morning. There is also a strong
shortwave over southern NM. The low will head northeast into SW MN
by evening with the southern shortwave headed to the KS/MO/OK/AR
border by 00z Mon. This shortwave will then head northeast to
northern lower MI 12z Mon with a negative tilt. Dry slot comes in
this afternoon into this evening before next surge with the next
shortwave comes in for late tonight and there will be a break in the
pcpn. When this happens, the cold air will return late tonight. A
mess of pcpn early this morning will turn over to all rain during
the morning, so the freezing rain will come to an end. Will let
going winter weather advisory continue until 15z when temperatures
will be warm enough to not cause anymore ice. Otherwise, rain will
be the rule for this forecast with snow mixing in late tonight. Only
exception to this will be in the Keweenaw which is where the coldest
air will be this morning and this is where snow will occur before
switching over to all rain. There will also be some lakeshore flood
concerns with beach erosion along the Lake Michigan and bay of Green
Bay shoreline this morning and added the Keweenaw Peninsula with
east flow piling the water up on the east side late this morning
into the afternoon. Will add a lakeshore flood advisory for the
Keweenaw and continue the one for Delta and Menominee Counties.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)

...ACCUMULATING HEAVY AND DENSE SNOW EXPECTED ON MONDAY...

Overall, as we progress through the upcoming week and into next
weekend, temperatures look to remain mostly seasonal, perhaps
slightly above normal. The upper-air pattern suggests the
possibility of active weather; however, the focus of this discussion
will revolve around the most impactful weather in the long-term -
being the winter storm that continues to look more and more likely
for Monday/Monday night.

More science details below, but the main concerns for this winter
storm are 1) timing, 2) impacts to travel/snow removal, 3) the wet,
dense snow characteristics, 4) potential for 2-3'' inch/hr snowfall
rates causing significant restrictions to visibilities and thus
allowing for the potential for higher snowfall amounts. In regards
to the timing, for the most part, models have come into fairly good
agreement with precipitation switching over from rain to snow
through the early/mid morning hours, with the potential for the
heaviest snow to fall Monday morning. It doesn't look terribly windy
during this time period, but given the wet, dense snow and the
transition from rain to snow it is very likely that snow will stick
onto elevated surfaces. Also, given the higher water content of the
snow it is possible there could be a few power outages. Confidence
isn't terribly high though in regards to how widespread any outages
may become due to the lack of stronger winds. Given the concerns and
impacts expected, have issued a winter storm watch to highlight the
upcoming event and get the word out. With an ongoing winter weather
advisory this morning (Sunday), opted to not issue double headlines,
but it certainly does look like warnings will be needed. In some
spots, especially across the south central and along Lake Michigan,
we may not reach warning criteria snow within a 12-hr time period,
but overall impacts to travel (especially during the morning
commute) and possible power outages may warrant the upgrades.

Okay, now where is this winter storm coming from? Well, current
water vapor imagery this morning shows an elongated north to south
streamer of vorticity stretching from all the way from Canada, down
across the Rockies into northern parts of Mexico! This N/S oriented
stream of vorticity is along the backside of the main longwave
trough impacting the central part of the county. Currently an
impressive shortwave is lifting across the Mid-Mississippi Valley
bringing us the energy supporting the ongoing wintry messy
precipitation. Further south, water vapor imagery shows a nice
stream of moisture feeding northward from both the Gulf of Mexico
AND the southern Pacific Ocean! The main shortwave that is going to
lift north and bring us the winter storm tomorrow is beginning to
pivot along the southern edge of the main longwave trough, all the
way down in New Mexico/northern Mexico. As this wave lifts northeast
into the Ohio River Valley, it brings with it more of the tropical-
rich air mass (PWATs remaining anomalously high with 2-3+ SD) and a
developing area of low pressure. By Monday, the main longwave trough
will transiting into a cutoff low, as the vort max rotates around
and northward across our region. As this wave arrives, a widespread
swatch of moderate to heavy precipitation is expected to overspread
the region from the south-southwest. Any lingering rain and/or
possibly some freezing rain in spots will diminish quickly Monday
morning as lift/dynamically cooling increases and the system
strengthens. There is still some uncertainty in the overall track of
the surface low, with high-res guidance guidance taking the furthest
west track compared to the medium-range guidance. However, even
models that have this further west track they all are consistent in
showing widespread QPF around 1 inch, with orographic enhancements
across the north central and west due to northeast - to north - to
northwest flow throughout the duration of the event.

As for how much snow is expected? Well, it will be highly dependent
on how the colder air evolves as the large-scale forcing
strengthens, where terrain/lake enhancements will occur, and overall
SLRs. As mentioned above, snow will be wet, dense. Given the overall
strong large-scale lift, high QPF forecast and unseasonably high
PWATs, did go less than 10:1 for SLRs Monday morning, when the bulk
of the heaviest snow is expected. Initially it doesn't look cold
enough aloft to support lake-enhancement, but there certainly will
be upslope/terrain augmentation going on to boost snowfall totals
across the Keweenaw and north central. Right now, just during the
morning hours on Monday some locations could pick up 4 to 8'' of
snow, locally highest over the higher terrain of Marquette County
and over the Keweenaw. Progressing through the afternoon and into
the overnight hours on Monday, an additional 3 to 7 inches of snow
are possible, with the axis of additional heavy snow expected across
the west where some lake-enhancement and terrain/upslope
augmentation is expected.

By Tuesday, area-wide snow looks to linger but will be much lighter
as the main upper-level low continues to pivot across the Upper
Great Lakes. It finally starts to push eastward into Ontario late
Tuesday into Wednesday, leaving behind some lingering lake-effect
snow showers mainly across the northwest wind snow belts. By
Wednesday, LES shuts down as surface ridging slides into the region
and ushers in more stable air.

Looking ahead to the end of the week/next weekend, there is the
potential for more active winter weather. However, as of right now
there is a lot of uncertainty as to which systems will bring impacts
to the region.
