...WSW headline management necessary with rapidly developing bands
of heavy snow over the southern portions of Upper Michigan this
evening...
Based on radar and mesoscale model trends through the evening hours,
felt compelled to include southern Schoolcraft in winter storm
warning tonight as more intense snow bands already reaching into
there this evening and could see more heavy snow through the next
several hours. Also bumped up amounts a few inches over the warning
counties as strong mid-level fgen, isentropic ascent and instability
will contribute to more intense bands with snowfall rates of 1-2"
per hour possible. Some heavier snow is also reaching into far
southern Marquette and southwest Alger counties and some of this
may even clip southern Luce county but believe this heavier snow
may be just temporary based on upstream radar imagery, so kept the
winter weather advisories going for these counties. Rest of the
headlines still look on target this evening.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday)

...Very heavy band of snow over southern portions of Upper Michigan
tonight but exact location still uncertain...
Upper levels show a trough over western CONUS with west-southwest
flow into the Upper Great Lakes. Jet streak is over Upper Great
Lakes with another heading into the central Plains. Shortwave
lifting fm Neb to southwest MN tracks across Upper Great Lakes
tonight supporting widespread snow spreading across most of Upper
Michigan. Though main sfc low stays well south toward Ohio Valley,
inverted sfc trough along with H85 low will support widespread snow
into our area through late tonight. Shortwave and low-level
troughing along with lift from the coupled jet and strong isentropic
ascent/H85-H6 fgen is aiding in flourishing of widespread shield of
snow from south 1/3 of MN across much of northwest half of WI and
just recently to the WI border. Already have lake effect going
over north central as well. A lot of areas within that shield of
snow are already sporting echoes over 28dbz and sfc obs with vsby
of 3/4 sm or less, pointing to moderate to heavy snow.
Late last night into this morning models trended toward showing more
snow across especially the south half of Upper Michigan. Biggest
forecast issue is strong band of fgen that is expected to spread
along WI border into scntrl Upper Michigan this evening. Still
uncertain where that heaviest band of snow sets up shop with ideas
varying from Iron county to northern Menominee county or anywhere in
between. Extrapolation of regional radar trends in the last couple
hours really still could support any of these scenarios.
What is certain is that where that band, or maybe even bands, set
up, very heavy snow could occur. Certainly have many positive
factors lining up for an intense mesoscale snow band including
focused fgen (h75-H6) with negative epv atop, isentropic ascent with
3-4g/kg mixing ratios and steep lapse rates filling into the shield
of snow from south with many convective elements observed down into
Iowa. Current forecast has what will likely will be a too
broadbrushed 4-7 inches of snow over scntrl. Would not be surprised
at all to see at least a few hours of 1-2"/hour snowfall rates in
the heavier band(s) of snow and could even see storm total snowfall
within the band(s) pushing 10 inches. Right now the messaging in the
WSW statement indicated a very heavy band of snow would occur and
also mentioned the higher snowfall rates while still talking to the
uncertainty of the location of the band.
Away from the focused heavy mesoscale snow band, expect a general 2-
4" type snow for all but the Keweenaw. All snow should end late
tonight, possibly tapering off as freezing drizzle while ending over
the south. Rest of day on Wed will be quiet with highs in the teens.
Headlines were kind of a challenge but went ahead and upgraded Iron,
Dickinson, Menominee and Delta counties to a winter storm warning to
cover where there is the best chance that the stronger band of snow
will occur. Kept the advisory for Gogebic as is, but did expand
winter weather advisories for rest of the forecast area except the
Copper Country as they look to stay far enough removed from
shortwave forcing to only allow for a couple inches of snow there.
.LONG TERM...(Wednesday night through Tuesday)
Issued at 525 PM EST TUE FEB 5 2019
Strong positive height anomaly/ridging over the ne Pacific, but also
having an extention across AK will be the driver of the pattern
across N America for at least the next 10 days. This anomaly will
force a mean western CONUS trof, supporting an active storm track
downstream across the CONUS. Next shortwave in the series, a minor
one, will be lifting across the Upper Lakes tonight, providing
tonight's snow event. Main event for the long term will occur
Thu/Thu night in association with the next stronger shortwave moving
across the southern Rockies Wed/Wed night. This wave will lift ne
across the Upper Great Lakes region Thu night with the wave
undergoing a significant deepening phase it does so. The last 12-
18hrs of model runs point toward this system being a more
significant winter event for Upper MI. Strong, gusty winds/blsn and
LES will follow this system into Fri. An active storm track may
continue into next week, depending on the evolution/structure of the
ne Pacific positive height anomaly which will impact the amplitude
of western troffing. With some degree of western troffing likely to
persist, there should be additional shortwaves ejecting downstream
across the CONUS next week to provide the potential for additional
snow events in the Great Lakes region. As for temps, the ne Pacific
ridging extending into AK will support a vast supply of arctic air
across Canada. Over the next 7 to 10 days, Upper MI will fall at
least under the southern extent of this arctic air, resulting in blo
normal temps prevailing. With the passage of the stronger system Thu
night, arctic air will more strongly surge into the area for Fri.
Could be some issues with wind chills under blustery conditions in
the tight pres gradient btwn strong high pres building into the
Plains and the deepening low pres lifting out of the Upper Lakes
into se Canada.
Beginning Wed night thru Fri...Attention will be on the shortwave
moving across the southern Rockies Wed night. This wave will lift
across the Upper Great Lakes Thu evening while deepening. Last 12-
18hrs of model runs have trended to show this wave more rapidly
deepening as it passes across the Upper Lakes. 12hr 500mb height
falls up to 200m over IA Thu aftn, increase to an impressive 250-
300m across eastern Upper MI Thu night, and then reach a very
impressive around 350m s of James Bay Fri morning. Arctic air
dominating to the nw and unseasonable warmth to the se will also be
supportive of a rapidly strengthening system. With the deepening
phase of the shortwave underway while it crosses the area, pcpn
amounts will be tied to how quickly the pcpn field
expands/intensifies/organizes in response to the rapidly
strengthening forcing, and that will likely be something the models
will struggle with. Generally speaking, with the mid-level low now
likely to close off over or just before reaching Upper MI, rather
than after the wave passes Upper MI, potential has increased for
more significant snow accumulations in Upper MI. Fast movement of
the system will be the biggest limiting aspect on the snow totals.
As for pytpes, CMC and especially ECMWF have trended more to the nw
with the low track/warmer, closer to the consensus of recent GFS
runs, though not as warm or as far nw with the low track. Recent GFS
runs have probably been too far nw based on GFS and especially CMC
ensembles, but certainly the se portion of the fcst area appears to
have some risk of seeing mixed pcpn for a time. NAM is still playing
catch up with the pattern and is of no use yet. 12z GFS/CMC/ECMWF
have, at least on this run, trended toward much better agreement
with sfc low track from MO to vcnty of the Straits/far eastern Upper
MI. This would place much of the fcst area under the risk of mdt to
hvy snowfall. A short period of significant lake/upslope enhancement
will also occur with the duration/intensity dependent on how quickly
the 850mb low organizes. The enhancement will lead to the highest
snow totals for the synoptic portion of the event occurring
somewhere in the area from Ironwood to the Keweenaw to the high
terrain of n central Upper MI. Heaviest pcpn will occur Thu
aftn/early evening under the passing, deepening wave. Could end up
pushing a foot of snow during that period in some portions of the
aforementioned favored lake/upslope enhanced areas with 4 to 8
elsewhere. Prior to the main period of pcpn, broad waa/isentropic
ascent and lead, weak shortwave will support a general light snow
Wed night/Thu morning. During this period of pcpn, fcst soundings
show some potential for -fzdz/-fzra occasionally se half as moisture
depth may not reach -10C at times.
As the system departs, a healthy surge of arctic air will send 850mb
temps down to -20 to -25C for Fri. So, synoptic snow will transition
to LES and blsn Thu night, and then continue on Fri for the snow
belts favored by nw winds. With the DGZ pushed down blo or at the
bottom of the convective layer, snowflakes will again become small
and much more effective at reducing vis. When combined with blsn due
to winds gusting 20-30mph w near Lake Superior and 25-40mph e of
Marquette near Lake Superior, expect near white-out conditions at
times on the backside of the system in the nw wind lake effect snow
belts. As for the LES on Fri, while a deep moisture profile is
present to at least 10kft, lack of the dgz and indications of a low
inversion at 3-5kft will strongly limit accumulations over what they
could be in such a situation following a winter storm system. Will
be a cold Fri with highs mostly single digits above 0F. Depending on
how tight the pres gradient becomes btwn the deepening, departing
low pres and strong high pres building into the Plains, wind chills
could be near advy criteria Fri morning. With the very cold air
arriving on gusty winds, the potential of power outages due to
falling ice laden branches on power lines will be a significant
concern in areas impacted by Monday's ice storm.
LES will wind down/shift to the w wind snow belts Fri night/Sat.
Shortwave swinging across northern Ontario Sat night/Sun will
then support an increase in LES for mainly the w wind snow belts.
With the mean western trof likely still in place, there should be
the potential of another wave to eject toward the Great Lakes at
some point early next week, roughly around Tue.
