.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 313 AM EST TUE NOV 26 2019

Upper air pattern consists of a 500 mb shortwave over the lower
Great Lakes and a deep and strong trough over the Rockies this
morning. This 500 mb trough will eject out into the plains and will
take on a negative tilt to it as it heads towards the upper Great
Lakes region 12z Wed. Strong 850-500 mb q-vector convergence comes
in later tonight along with deeper moisture and strong isentropic
lift after 06z on the I285K surface. For today, looks like there
could be some drizzle and freezing drizzle in upslope areas, but qpf
looks negligible.

Very busy shift with lots of products to be written with many
headlines, so will hit the highlights. The 00z run of the models
came in stronger on the wind and increased the winds slightly. Also,
looks like the pcpn tonight based off of soundings for IMT and
places in the southwest start off as snow. Freezing rain does not
look likely tonight as temperatures are too cold and there is not
any warm nose to come in in the southwest. Over the east, looks like
a rain/snow mix with pcpn first starting off as rain and then going
to a rain/snow mix as warm air is there initially with sfc
temperatures well above freezing. There will be a sharp gradient in
snow across the highlands of Marquette County tonight which there
usually is based on an ENE wind. 850 mb temperatures will be -4C to
-6C and with Lake Superior being around 4C to 5C, this is enough for
lake enhancement to the pcpn along with the upslope component and
will cause an uptick in the snowfall and qpf totals with this event.
This leads into the next forecast period which will be quite active.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday)

...High-impact storm to bring heavy snow and strong winds Wednesday...

The well advertised snowstorm will be really getting going to start
off the long term period. Strong low to mid level fgen will lead to
very intense snowfall early in the morning, and it won't let up
through midday as the deformation zone traverses the west half of
the region and lake enhancement processes add additional moisture.
The addition of high resolution model guidance has led to some
significant increases in snow accumulation over the western UP,
especially in interior northern Marquette County where there is a
solid chance for totals approaching 2 feet. Several high-res models
are indicating the potential for even more than that. Snowfall rates
may exceed 2"/hr for brief periods through the morning hours, with
visibility falling to a quarter mile or less. While there are still
a few models/ens members that produce significant snows along the
Lake Michigan shore, confidence is higher in little to no snow along
that corridor with sfc temps too warm as the low center tracks near
or just south of the Straits of Mackinac. For this reason, have
opted for an advy for Delta/Menominee Counties since only northern
portions of those counties will see accumulating snow. Nrn
Menominee may not see 4", but with only a very slight shift in track
significant fluctuations in snow totals would be possible.

Alger County is interesting, as snow will fall below criteria but
given the gusty winds and the time of year a WSW is warranted. West
of there, 8-14" is likely with higher totals in a few spots. To the
east, given some uncertainty in sfc temps and snow totals, in
coordination with Gaylord have opted to hold the watch to see if
things become clearer with the 12Z suite.

In addition to the intense snowfall, this system will also be windy.
3 Hr pressure falls of 10-12 mb followed by rises of a similar
magnitude point towards a significant isallobaric component to the
wind field in addition to strong gradient winds. Widespread gusts of
20-30 mph inland and 30-45 mph near Lake Superior are likely.
Gustiest winds will be along the tip of the Keweenaw where they
could reach storm force, and so a Blizzard Warning will be needed
there. But elsewhere the winds and snow will still have very
significant impacts, with travel highly discouraged despite the
holiday as blowing and drifting snow combined with very low
visibility may make some roads nearly impassable at times during the
day.

Synoptic forcing will exit through the afternoon but lingering ll
moisture and cold 850 temps will lead to at least some LES in the N
wind belts through the evening. It will end quickly overnight as
ridging pushes dry air in from the W. Should be dry Thur/Fri with
near normal temps. Then, a strong system working it's way down the
Pacific Coast today and tomorrow will eject out of the Rockies
Friday night and head towards the Great Lakes by Saturday night.
There still remains ample uncertainty in the strength and track of
this system. Ensemble solutions have started to hint at a more
southerly track that could prevent significant accumulations across
the northern UP, but it still remains very possible that portions of
the area could be looking at another foot+ over the weekend. Will
hone in on the details after we get done with this first doozy of a
storm.

MVFR to IFR ceilings are expected tonight at KIWD/KCMX, with the
potential for some snow showers and/or freezing drizzle to develop
through the rest of the early morning hours. After this shallow
moisture starts to thin midday Tuesday, precipitation chances look
to end, but MVFR ceilings remain in place. Towards the very end of
this TAF forecast, ceilings look to start the downward trend into
IFR ahead of an approaching winter storm. At KSAW, MVFR ceilings are
expected to arrive later this morning. There could be a few sporadic
showers or two, but given the overall downsloping winds expected
through the morning hours confidence wasn't high enough to mention
anything other than VCSH. Otherwise, as winds become northeast
throughout the latter half of this TAF period, expect ceilings to
lower into the IFR range and light, upslope snow to begin ahead of
an approaching winter storm.

While just outside of this TAF issuance, it should be noted that
conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly at all TAF sites
Wednesday morning as accumulating wet, dense snow arrives with a
winter storm.

The calm before the storm will happen today with the wind quickly
increasing tonight as a strong low pressure system moves towards the
area, but passes by to the south and goes across northern Lake
Michigan and into Lake Huron. Latest 00z model runs increased the
winds a bit and for that reason and the quick increase in the wind
speeds, dropped the gale watch and went right to a storm warning
instead as storm force wind gusts up to 55 knots are expected late
tonight into Wed morning. The stronger wind speeds will also cause
higher waves which will lead to some lakeshore flooding as well
which really gets going on Wed as the storm force winds will be
east and northeast. The wind drops below gales late Wed night.
Next gale event looks to be Sat with another strong fall storm
approaching the area. This would be an east northeast gale event.

Heavy, wet snow and strong winds with a significant storm system
moving through the Great Lakes will impact travel late Tuesday
night through Wednesday. See the latest Winter Weather Message for
details.

Strong north to northeast winds will allow waves along the
majority of the Lake Superior shoreline to build to 13 to 16 feet
Wednesday afternoon and evening. Locally higher waves are
possible! This will lead to beach erosion, and may lead to minor
lakeshore flooding concerns for some. See the latest Lakeshore
Hazards Message for further details.

Strong east-northeast to northeast winds will allow waves to build
to 8 to 10 feet across northwest Lake Michigan Tuesday night into
midday Wednesday. The wind forecast may change slightly over the
next 24 hours, but if waves of this magnitude continue to be
forecast, this will cause concerns for lakeshore flooding and
beach erosion along the Lake Michigan shoreline, including
Menominee, Delta, and southern Schoolcraft counties. The largest
waves are expected to impact the eastern shoreline of the Garden
Peninsula.

Another winter storm may impact the region this weekend.
