TONIGHT WITH BLIZZARD CONDITIONS/HIGH WINDS...
Water vapor imagery and RAP analysis a vigorous shortwave/mid-level
low lifting quickly ne across WI. At the sfc, rapidly deepening sfc
low of 984mb was located just e of Green Bay, WI at 10z. For anytime
of the year, this will end up as an usually deep sfc low tracking
thru the northern Great Lakes. Model consensus has the pres down
into the low/mid 970s mb by the time it's ne of Whitefish Bay early
this aftn. Northern stream shortwave currently over the eastern
Dakotas will be phasing with the main wave and will be a factor in
maintaining system snow across much of the area today.
Strengthening wind fields in the wake of the deep, intensifying sfc
low and ahead of a 1040mb sfc high building se toward the Dakotas
will be one of the major concerns today/tonight. Once stronger caa
kicks in from w to e this aftn thru early evening and pres rises
upwards of 10mb/3hr develop over/just nw of the area, winds will
really crank up. Momentum transfer on fcst soundings support wind
gusts of 40-50mph across the board with peak gusts of 55 to 60mph
possible. Of particular concern is the area east of Marquette close
to Lake Superior. Increased mixing over Lake Superior could support
65 to perhaps 70mph gusts along the lakeshore. Across the area,
there will likely be some tree limbs and power lines downed by the
winds. Sporadic power outages are expected with widespread power
outages a possibility. With the very cold air surging into the area
for tonight and Mon, the prospect of potentially long duration power
outages is a serious concern.
Heaviest pcpn with the system is already lifting out of s central
Upper MI as mid-level dry slot surges ne. Ongoing mixed pcpn over
the s central and eastern fcst area will diminish quickly over the
next hr or two, perhaps leaving behind some -dz/-fzdz for a time
before areas of snow wrap back into that area. To the w, hvy
deformation snow will continue this morning. As cyclonic ne to n
winds back to the nw and caa gets underway, snow will take on an
increasing upslope/lake enhanced component late morning thru the
aftn. While there is considerable ice cover over western Lake
Superior, expect strong winds to open up sufficiently large gaps in
the ice as the ice compresses/is windrowed to allow for an increase
in lake heat/moisture fluxes with time. The strong winds will likely
displace upslope enhancement much farther inland than normally
occurs. Often in such cases, enhancement will be displaced beyond
the Keweenaw, and it quite likely that Baraga County/parts of
western Marquette County sw into eastern Gogebic/se Ontonagon/nw
Iron Counties will see the best enhancement. Herman in Baraga County
may be a prime location for greatest storm total snowfall. Eastern
Dakotas shortwave will provide further assistance to the snowfall
today. This aftn into this evening, nw flow lake enhanced snowfall
will increase into the eastern fcst area. Deeper moisture will
depart from w to e tonight, but still expect several inches of new
snow across the nw and eastern fcst area snow belts.
Storm total accumulations by sunrise Mon will likely exceed 1 foot
across the w and nw with amounts locally up to 2 feet over the nw
fcst area. 8 to as much as 12 inches should be the rule for the n
central/ne fcst area, ranging down to 1 to 3 inches s central.
With the combination of falling snow/high winds/blsn/frequent
whiteouts, blizzard warning issuance for the western and northern
fcst area will be forthcoming around 12z. Travel will be or will
become very difficult to impossible across the w and n. Travel
should be avoided. Where high snow banks line the shoulders of
roads, deep drifting will likely occur once the strong winds/blsn
develop, making some of them impassable.
.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)

Despite turning the calender from February to March late this
week, it appears the active winter weather pattern continues
until further notice. Powerful storm that is bringing multiple
weather hazards today will be over western Quebec on Monday
morning. Pressure gradient still tight enough to keep some 30 mph
wind gusts going near Lk Superior. Should also be some lake
effect, likely more than most models indicate as with the strong
winds later today and tonight, should be some areas of open water
develop as the ice moves around. Banking on fact there will be
sufficient open water, soundings suggest lake effect convective
layer up to 3kft with equilibrium level perhaps as high as 6kft
will be at temps at or below -20c. So, looking at smaller
snowflakes and generally light accums. Blowing snow and reduced
vsby likely bigger hazard on Mon. Though very strong winds that
occur tonight will be winding down, certainly may need an advisory
type headline for areas east of Marquette on Mon due to the lake
effect and blowing snow.
Otherwise, main issue most areas on Monday will be the cold airmass
that spills across the Upper Great Lakes. With H85 temps down to -
25c, expect highs to only reach single digits above zero over much
of Upper Michigan. Normal highs are upper 20s to near 30F, so these
temps will be much below normal. Wind chills in the morning will be
lower than 20 below over west half and in the teens blo zero in the
east half and wind chills should remain blo zero even into the aftn.
Scattered lake effect should continue into Tue, mainly east of
Munising. Another chilly day with temps only moderating to around 10
above most areas, maybe mid teens south central. Clipper type
system, right now projected to weaker strength, slides across Tue
night into Wed. A few inches of snow could occur with this system.
Sizable break expected in wake of this system, but seems that GFS is
trying to lead the way showing another very strong low pressure
system (down to 970s mb again) with heavy snow lifting across Upper
Michigan. Last couple runs of the ECMWF have trended sharply to this
idea as well. Its early, but obviously it bears watching. Noteable
that the blends are already projecting 40+ kts for winds on Lk
Superior next Sat which is pretty impressive this far out. Obviously
details could change, so stuck with the blends. We'll take it one
storm at a time in this very active pattern.

Conditions will continue to deteriorate as heavy snow moves in as a
strong/deepening low pressure system tracks toward eastern Upper
Michigan. Expect LIFR conditions early becoming VLIFR with the heavy
snow at all sites. Poor conditions will continue into Sun evening
with very strong northwest winds Sunday into Sunday evening. Wind
gusts may exceed 40 kts at all sites by late Sunday morning/early
afternoon due to the powerful low pressure system. The strong winds
will also result in considerable blowing snow at all sites on
Sunday. Conditions improve at all sites by Sun evening as the heavy
snow ends as the system moves away.
