...MAJOR WINTER STORM EXPECTED SATURDAY INTO SUNDAY MORNING WITH
HEAVY SNOW LIKELY...

.A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for all of central and 
southern Minnesota and western Wisconsin from Saturday through 
Sunday morning.

Heavy snow will develop over the Plains and advance into southern
and western Minnesota early Saturday morning, before reaching
eastern Minnesota by late morning, and western Wisconsin by early
afternoon. Snow rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are expected
through early evening before easing Saturday night. Some rain or
freezing rain could mix with the snow at times along Interstate 90
Saturday. The snow is expected to end by mid morning Sunday. 
Total snow accumulations of 7 to 13 inches are possible across the
entire region, with the highest amounts currently expected across
central Minnesota, including western parts of the Twin Cities 
metro.

Strong northwest winds will develop Saturday night and Sunday
morning with gusts of 40 to 45 mph possible. This will lead to
areas of blowing and drifting snow, but widespread blizzard
conditions are not currently expected.

Minnesota around midday, and western Wisconsin during the afternoon.
Snow rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are expected through early 
evening before easing Saturday night. Some rain, sleet, or 
freezing rain will mix with the snow at times across southern
Minnesota Saturday. The snow is expected to end by early morning 
Sunday. Snowfall totals of 7 to 12 inches are expected across

.A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect north of a line from 
St. James to Faribault and a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect 
for the rest of southern Minnesota for Saturday into early Sunday.

Heavy snow will develop over the Plains and advance into southern
and western Minnesota Saturday morning, before reaching eastern
Minnesota around midday, and western Wisconsin during the
afternoon and early evening. Snow rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour
are expected through early evening before easing Saturday night. 
Some rain, sleet, or freezing rain will mix with the snow at times
across southern Minnesota Saturday. The snow is expected to end 
by early morning Sunday. Snowfall totals of 7 to 10 inches are
likely with localized 12 inches possible over west central
Minnesota. Snow totals of 4 to 7 inches are expected across 
southern Minnesota where a mix is possible.

Strong northwest winds will develop Saturday night and Sunday
morning with gusts of 40 to 45 mph possible across southern and
western Minnesota. This will lead to areas of blowing and
drifting snow, but widespread blizzard conditions are not
currently expected. The Winter Storm Warning continues through
Sunday morning across western and portions of southern Minnesota

...MAJOR WINTER STORM TO AFFECT MINNESOTA AND WESTERN WISCONSIN
SATURDAY INTO SUNDAY MORNING...

.A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect north of a line from
St. James to Faribault to Eau Claire, and a Winter Weather 
Advisory has been issued for the rest of southern Minnesota for 
Saturday into early Sunday.

Snow will move into western and southern Minnesota on Saturday 
morning, reach eastern Minnesota around midday, and spread across 
western Wisconsin during the afternoon and evening. Some rain, 
sleet, or freezing rain will mix with the snow at times along the 
I-90 and I-35 corridors in south central and east central 
Minnesota and west central Wisconsin Saturday. Snow rates of 1 to 
2 inches per hour are expected from west central into central 
Minnesota through early evening before easing Saturday night. The 
snow is expected to end by early morning Sunday. Snowfall totals 
of 5 to 10 inches are likely in the Warning area, with localized 
amounts around 12 inches possible over west central Minnesota. 
Snow totals of 2 to 4 inches along with light ice accumulations 
are expected in the Advisory area across southern Minnesota where 
a longer duration of a wintry mix is possible. 

Strong northwest winds will develop Saturday night and Sunday
morning with gusts of 40 mph possible across southern and western
Minnesota. This will lead to areas of blowing and drifting snow,
but widespread blizzard conditions are not currently expected.
The Winter Storm Warning continues through Sunday morning across
western and portions of southern Minnesota due to the potential
for blowing snow.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday night)

Short term concern is model handling the weak short wave that
traverses southern CWA Thu/Thu night.

Few lower clouds/flurries ending by dark to the east. Then mix of
higher to mid clouds encroaching the region from west to east
through midday Thursday. Model trends continue to lift the weak
farther to the north, with the 12z NAM into central MN Thu
afternoon. The ECMWF has been most consistent with this feature and
will include a chance of light snow over the southern third of the
CWA developing to the southwest Thu morning and spreading along the
south and southeast into Thursday evening. I did mention likely PoP
along the I90 corridor for few hours as this location looks best for
some light accumulation.

The ECMWF is slower with the trough so will have to continue some l
ow end PoP after 06z Fri to the southeast.  With clouds increasing
during the night to the west, temepratures may not drop off as much
as the last couple nights. Trended a little warmer than blended
guidance tonight and Thursday night. High temperatures Thursday
should be tempered somewhat to the west with cloud cover. A general
15 to 20 degree max temperature looks good across southern MN.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

The extended period has two storm systems in question. One will
occur over the weekend, and another during the middle of next
week.

Confidence remains high that a large, and powerful winter storm
will affect the Upper Midwest over the weekend. Subtle differences
in the thermal profile, the amount of precipitation that falls,
and the duration of the event, remains in question.

Since this morning, the only change in the forecast is that this
system is cooler than previous model runs, which leads to higher
confidence in all snow vs. a mixture of precipitation types.
There could still be some freezing drizzle at the beginning, or
toward the end of this storm as we lose ice in the clouds, or we
get dry slotted. This is more non-impactful over the weekend as
the main hazard and impacts will be the snowfall amounts and
blowing snow.

First, the onset of precipitation looks to be Saturday morning from
southwest to northeast as the storm moves out of the Rockies, and
into the Plains. Both the EC and GFS support a negatively tilted
trough moving across Nebraska, and into the Upper Midwest through
Sunday morning. This negatively tilted trough will aid in a more
potent storm system as it draws up ample moisture from the Gulf
of Mexico. Even the strong moisture transport at different levels
of the atmosphere, support higher than normal moisture content
with this system.

Another aspect to this storm is the convection across Iowa. Due to
the potent nature, and the possibility of strong storms in Iowa, the
thermal gradient, and aspects of latent heat could displace the
higher QPF amounts in Iowa, vs Minnesota. The current run of the GFS
has this scenario with bands of higher QPF amounts in eastern Iowa.
The EC doesn't show the convective bands, and therefore QPF amounts
are higher in Minnesota vs, the GFS. These differences will affect
the total amount of snowfall over the weekend.

This system does support a progressive element which leads to
improving conditions by Sunday afternoon/evening.

Compared to the blizzard we had in late February, this system is not
as intense as it moves across the Upper Midwest/Great Lakes. But at
the same time, heavy snowfall, strong winds of 20 to 35 mph in the
typical areas of western/southern Minnesota, will lead to whiteout
conditions. I wouldn't be surprised to see blizzard warnings issued,
but it looks as though it will be more high end Winter Storm vs. a
true blizzard. Besides the whiteout conditions, the heavy snowfall,
and the anticipated heavy snowfall rates Saturday, will lead to
hazardous driving, if not impossible at times. Please continue to
monitor this storm as it becomes more apparent with the strength
and timing.

After this storm, the atmosphere will once again wrap up with the
persistent, progressive western CONUS trough, and storm systems
moving out into the Plains. One different aspect to next weeks storm
is an apparent stronger upper ridge building across the
southeastern CONUS. This ridge will aid in much warm air advecting
northern into the Plains, and Upper Midwest. Therefore, next week
system could be more liquid vs. snow.

that some light snow is possible at KMKT and KRWF Thursday
evening. Winds will become northeast later tonight, and
eventually switch to the southeast. High clouds will thicken as
well.

KMSP...

VFR conditions with no aviation concerns. Northeast winds will
become southeast with high clouds.

/OUTLOOK FOR KMSP/

Fri...MVFR then IFR. Wind SE 5-10 kts.
Sat...IFR with LIFR/SN+ in the afternoon. Rates 1 in/hr, 6-10
