The greatest snow accumulations will stretch from west central Minnesota through southwest Wisconsin with lesser amounts to the north. This system is expected to cause significant travel impacts, especially through the Monday morning commute. Winter Storm Warnings are in place for central Minnesota into west central Wisconsin. Western Minnesota is in a Winter Weather Advisory. Additional snowfall totals of 1-3 inches are expected in the Winter Storm Warning. Additional snowfall is not expected in the advisory area, but blowing snow is possible. Wind chills are expected to fall to 25 below zero and lower Monday night and Tuesday morning. Dangerous wind chills as low as 60 below zero are expected Tuesday morning through Thursday morning in western and central Minnesota. Surface analysis this afternoon shows a compact but potent clipper
low over far southern Saskatchewan province with a trailing warm
front draped over the central Dakotas into the Kansas City area and
a cold front extending west over the Rockies international border.
This low will drop into south-central ND this evening then to the
MN/SD/IA triple point around midnight. The center will then shift
due east and move across IA into northern IL overnight to daybreak
Monday and to southern Lake Michigan by midday Monday. The leading
edge of frigid Canadian air will then move into northern MN Monday
evening and expand across all of MN/WI Monday night into Tuesday
morning.
A couple of key changes took place in the models this morning.
First, the track of the low is closer to MN. It was progged to stay
a little further west and south, including when it was making its
eastward turn. Secondly, slightly higher amounts of moisture are
accompanying the system. With stronger lift closer to the WFO MPX,
especially this evening into the early morning hours, plus the
higher QPF, this leads to an increase in the snow amounts for this
event in the short-term. Highest snowfall totals are now in the 8"
to 11" range from Stevens/Swift/Chippewa counties in western MN
through the Twin Cities metro to the Eau Claire area. And, overall,
snow amounts have been increased such that all counties in the WFO
MPX coverage area (except Martin County MN) are now included in the
Winter Storm Warning. Only Martin County is not expected to exceed
6" snowfall, so that county remains in the Winter Weather Advisory.
The snow will be moderate-heavy at times, especially late this
afternoon through this evening into the early morning hours. Rates
at times may equal or even slightly exceed 1 in/hr. Snowfall will be
tapering off by the Monday morning commute. However, due to such
cold air in place (lows within a few degrees of 0F), the snow will
be a dry powdery type of snow which will easily be blown around and
make for slippery roads.
Even when the snow ends, breezy NW winds of 10-20 mph will make for
blowing/drifting snow issues through at least the first half of
Monday, hence continuing the warning/advisory products through then.
Once the snow ends, then attention will turn to the dangerously
frigid air incoming to the area. Highs Monday will range roughly 5-
12 degrees with wind chills -5F to as low as -25F. Temperatures will
then plummet to between -10F and -20F as the 1044mb high pressure
airmass approaches. Even with winds diminishing slightly to 8-15mph,
wind chills early Tuesday morning will reach -30F to -40F.
.LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday)

Main story in the long term continues to be the historic cold
outbreak and dangerously cold wind chills Tuesday through Thursday.
The cold anomaly is already showing up in surface observations across
the northern Canadian Archipelago, with widespread observations of -40
degrees this afternoon to go along with wind speeds of 20-30 mph.
This airmass will only moderate slightly as a deep polar airmass
slides south and lingers over the Great Lakes region Tuesday
through Thursday. Confidence is high in this scenario with GEFS &
Euro ensembles showing heights and cold temperatures approaching
historic levels through multiple layers of the atmosphere. To put
this cold air in perspective: if you're looking for the
stratosphere you won't have to go far Tuesday afternoon, with
forecast soundings showing the tropopause height as low as 3-4 km
AGL. This parameters of this cold airmass compare well to other
well-known cold outbreaks during the winters of 1982, 1994, 1996,
& 2014. Meanwhile, at the surface, we will be sandwiched between a
strong Arctic high dropping out of northwest Canada and a broad
region of low pressure over the eastern Great Lakes. This pressure
gradient will lead to strong northwest winds to go along with the
polar airmass, with the gustiest winds expected Tuesday afternoon
& evening as strong low-level cold advection allows for gusts of
30-35 mph mixing down to the surface. Expect dangerous wind chills
below -35 to begin as early as Tuesday morning, with temperatures
containing to fall through Wednesday morning. Models are in
agreement with bringing the core of the polar air over our area
Tuesday afternoon, which will likely keep temperatures from
reaching record-cold levels Wednesday morning. Low temperatures of
-25 to -35 are expected with an isolated -40 or two not out over
the question in low-lying and sheltered areas over the deepest
snowpack. However with wind speeds not expected to drop below
10-15 mph overnight, wind chill values approaching -50 degrees or
colder are looking increasingly likely area-wide Wednesday
morning. Wind chills are expected to remain below -35 degrees
Wednesday afternoon, with temperatures "warming" to -15 to -20
during the day but winds remaining at or above 10 mph. Winds
become calm Thursday morning which would lead to better
radiational cooling conditions, but with the core of the polar air
already east of the area, expect temperatures to be similar to
those Wednesday morning. Though winds will be light, even winds of
4-5 mph will lead to dangerous wind chills at these temperatures
so will likely need to continue wind chill warnings through
Thursday morning.
The polar air finally breaks it grip over the region Thursday
afternoon, as the high slides off to the east and southerly flow
allows temperatures to rebound back near 0. The warming trend
continues through the weekend with temperatures above freezing
expected on Saturday. Guidance shows a low in the Saturday-Sunday
time frame, but confidence is low at this time in precipitation
chances and what precipitation types we may expect.

MVFR/LIFR conditions with snow overnight. This snow will end from
west to east, but could see some MVFR clouds linger throughout the
day. Northeast winds will become northerly and eventually
northwesterly with gusts near 20 to 25 kts. These gusts will taper
off Monday evening as VFR conditions set in.
KMSP...
Light snow will linger overnight, but should taper off to MVFR and
eventually IFR by morning. Could see ceilings below 1700 ft at
times, but most of Monday should have ceilings above 2000 ft.
Winds will become northwest with gusts tapering off over night.
