.SHORT TERM...(Today through Wednesday)

Low to mid level cloud cover will continue shifting southward this
morning as a trough axis pivots southeastward through the western
Great Lakes region. Cloud cover will also increase from the
southwest during the late morning and afternoon as theta-e advection
reaches southwestern Minnesota ahead of the developing significant
winter storm system. There will be fairly dry boundary layer air
in place, so rain chances will be limited and precipitation will
be light this afternoon and evening.

A significant low pressure system will develop lee of the Rockies
late Tuesday into Wednesday. Moisture will continue to increase
ahead of the low in the Northern Great Plains. Continued isentropic
lift will allow for increasing precipitation chances Wednesday
morning and afternoon. The rain will likely transition to a mix of
rain, snow, and sleet overnight into Wednesday. There remains some
uncertainty in regards to how much sleet will occur as models differ
in the depth of the melting layer and refreezing layer. A period of
solely snow will be possible during the mid-morning on Wednesday.
Precipitation should transition to primarily rain again by
Wednesday afternoon. Areas along and south of I-94 will likely
receive the most precipitation through Wednesday afternoon with
widespread 0.25- 0.75 inch of QPF likely and near 1 inch possible.

...ANOTHER POTENTIALLY HISTORIC MID APRIL WINTER STORM WEDNESDAY
NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT...

The overall forecast reasoning remains the same from the last
several days. A potent low pressure system will track from
Colorado and Kansas northeast to the Upper Midwest. Incredible
dynamics with this system will bring a well developed and heavy
shield of precipitation in beginning Wednesday night, continuing
Thursday, then tapering off gradually Thursday night into early
Friday morning.

The biggest change made to the forecast stems from a shift in the
latest deterministic guidance to the northwest, closer to the NAM
solution. With this track shift comes a warm nose between 700-800
mb that should also lift further north into more of the region on
southerly flow in that layer. While the warm layer is not as
extreme as the NAM, the GFS/Canadian/ECMWF bring the 0C max
wetbulb temperature aloft isotherm in the vicinity of a line from
New Ulm to the Twin Cities and Rice Lake Wednesday night and
Thursday. This should be considered the northern extent of the
wintry mix potential, but there are still differences in the
placement of this above freezing layer, so further adjustments
should be expected going forward. The most likely result will be
sleet due to a deep layer of freezing air below this warm layer,
which is quite a distance above the surface. However, if the
hydrometeors cannot freeze in time, we are going to end up with
more rain, especially with surface temperatures in the low to mid
30s Thursday. Before the warm nose arrives, there will be a good
chance for a several hour burst of heavy snow over much of the
area Wednesday evening, which could be when most of the snow
accumulation occurs with this event in the mix zone. The big
takeaway with this issue is the snowfall gradient will likely be
tighter than currently forecast where ever the warm nose halts its
northern progression. Left the Winter Storm Watch going for these
areas due to that uncertainty.

The area that should experience the worst conditions appears to
be over western Minnesota. Here, there is little chance for a
transition to a mix, the heavy snow shield will persist longest,
and wind gusts in excess of 50 mph are quite likely at times. In
fact, the 850 mb easterly low level jet maximizes Thursday
morning and early afternoon over the region with an intensity
ranging from 55 kts on the NAM, to 60 kts on the GFS and Canadian,
to an astonishing 75 kts on the ECMWF. With the inversion
expected near or above that level, there is potential to mix down
some very strong winds early Thursday within the heavy snow bands
or isolated thunderstorms. Total accumulations of 12 to 20+ inches
are expected across western Minnesota. With the strength of the
winds anticipated, went ahead and pulled the trigger already on a
Blizzard Warning for most of that area. If the mix doesn't reach
as far north as the Twin Cities, then perhaps the metro could
experience blizzard conditions as well - similar to what happened
last year.

The intensity of the snow and the winds will start winding down
Thursday night and should taper off Friday morning.

An area of low clouds will continue to shift southward this
morning and will likely lead to a period of MVFR ceilings at AXN,
STC, and RNH. Mid-level cloud cover will increase from the
southwest this afternoon and overnight into Wednesday. Chances
for precipitation return by late Wednesday morning as a
significant winter storm nears the northern plains.

KMSP... VFR conditions are expected through today, but there is a
slight chance for MVFR ceilings during the late morning as an
area of low clouds shifts southward. The current thinking is that
there will be enough dry air to scatter out and lift the cloud
layer. Mid-level cloud cover will increase overnight with a chance
for -RASN during the late morning on Wednesday.
