Issued at 629 AM CDT Wed Mar 20 2019 Updated to include 12z aviation discussion below. && .SHORT TERM...(Today through Thursday) Issued at 314 AM CDT Wed Mar 20 2019 Surface analysis early this morning shows a weak low pressure center over southwest Ontario province with a cold front extending westward over southern Manitoba province. A secondary low pressure center remains well to the south over Missouri. Aloft, generally northwesterly flow prevails atop the north-central CONUS while each aforementioned low pressure center has a compact shortwave trough atop it. The northern low will track south southeast into the Great Lakes, dragging its associated cold front south across MN/WI. No precipitation is expected for the vast majority of the WFO MPX coverage area, with the only exception being far interior west-central WI where a few isolated rain/snow showers are possible during the first half of the day today. The two low pressure centers, along with their respective upper level shortwave troughs, are expected to merge east of the Mississippi River later this afternoon while high pressure slides in behind the departing systems. Surface high pressure with northwest flow aloft, the leading edge of a sharp incoming ridge axis, will prevail tonight through tomorrow with gradually decreasing cloud cover. Another cold front is expected to drop through the region late Thursday but this will be of little to no consequence. Highs will remain in the 40s both Wednesday and Thursday with lows remaining in the 20s. .LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Tuesday) Issued at 314 AM CDT Wed Mar 20 2019 Deep ridging builds into the central US for the end of the week ushering in our first spring warm up and continuing our run of dry weather. While models have backed off on the 850 mb temperatures under the ridge axis, we still look to warm into the upper 40s Friday and mid 50s saturday under plenty of sunshine. Temperatures Sunday also look to approach 50, albeit under cloudy skies and with possible precipitation. Low temperatures look to remain below freezing Friday and Saturday morning, ideal for halting the snow melt overnight, but will stay above freezing Sunday ahead of the next possible chance for precipitation. These above normal temperatures along with dewpoints increasing above freezing Saturday and Sunday will really accelerate the spring snowmelt, especially across western Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin where snow depths of 20+ inches still remain. Flood warnings are already out for many area rivers, and rises are only expected to increase over the weekend. As mentioned previously, precipitation chances return Sunday as a shortwave approaches from the northern plains. There continues to be discrepancies in the handling of this wave with the GFS being stronger and producing more precipitation over the area, and the ECMWF/CMC weaker with the bulk of the precipitation farther south. Even if models trend towards the stronger solution on the GFS, precipitation amounts remain under 0.5" so not expecting the potential for heavy precipitation out of this system. Temperatures drop behind this system as a cold front drags south across the upper Midwest, and rain changing over to a rain snow/mix can't be ruled out Sunday evening if precipitation is still occurring. Temperatures will be cooler on Monday, but still seasonable for late March, before another warm up midweek as ridging again builds into the central US. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Thursday morning) Issued at 629 AM CDT Wed Mar 20 2019 VFR conditions to generally prevail at all sites throughout this TAF set but there will be lowering ceilings throughout the day with the approach and passage of a cold front from the north. Ceilings will mainly stay in the mid-levels just within VFR levels, but with the WI TAF sites closer to the main low associated with the cold front, both RNH and EAU may be susceptible to MVFR ceilings late this afternoon.
