Some patchy fog has developed across western Minnesota. Otherwise, light winds and temperatures ranging from the low single digits in the deep fresh snowpack over western MN to the lower or middle teens across eastern MN into western WI are in place this morning. Clear skies and light winds will continue today and most of tonight. Additional fog could develop again tonight with some melting of the snowpack anticipated today as highs climb to near 30. Moisture will surge northward late tonight and especially Tuesday with clouds rapidly returning. The depth of the low level moisture will increase Tuesday and some lift in advance of the initial wave with the midweek system will allow for some drizzle or light rain to develop Tuesday afternoon. As dew points rise above freezing, we'll likely form advection fog over the cold snowpack. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Sunday) Issued at 426 AM CDT Mon Mar 11 2019 Main issue in the long term remains the Wednesday-Thursday timeframe with widespread rainfall and temperatures rising well into the 40s with a prolonged period above freezing. By Tuesday evening, the main low pressure system will be moving east across the southwestern CONUS toward the panhandle region, with surface cyclogenesis occurring through Wednesday. As the system deepens and pivots northeast, strong potential vorticity advection will target the local area by Wednesday morning along with strong theta-e advection in the low levels. By this time, the atmospheric column will have warmed significantly so expect rain as the primary p-type which is consistent with previous forecasts. Widespread moderate rain will lift north through the forecast area in response, but the biggest question mark in terms of rainfall amounts revolves around the potential dry slot. The ECMWF backed off on QPF for eastern MN into western WI indicating a strong dry slot shutting off or severely limiting rainfall amounts Wednesday evening and night. The GFS and CMC keep the dry slot suppressed to our south and still indicate the potential for 2" total rainfall amounts by the time the system pushes out. Given the uncertainty with the dry slot, stuck with the blended approach which incorporated the EC solution and lowered QPF somewhat across eastern MN and wester WI. The center of the dynamic low pressure system will advance northeast from western Kansas Wednesday across Nebraska and into western Iowa by early Thursday. Best LI's do become slightly negative Wednesday night mainly across far southern MN, and 500- 700mb lapse rates do exceed 7C/km, so went ahead and added a slight chance of thunder south of the Twin Cities. Once the system works into southern MN, conditions will quickly change northwest of the surface low. Very strong winds are anticipated to develop from the north/northwest as we get on the backside of the low, which will cool the atmosphere quickly and allow for a transition to snowfall as the system starts pulling away. Amounts would be light and short-lived but it's the wind that is the bigger issue. Sustained speeds near 30 MPH with gusts of 50 MPH are appearing increasingly likely especially across western through far southern MN Thursday afternoon. Beyond this system, the forecast looks drier and cooler, but daytime highs still may climb above freezing despite the cooler overall pattern. Average daytime highs reach 40 degrees by this Wednesday in the Twin Cities, so expecting temperatures slightly below normal into the weekend. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon) Issued at 1217 PM CDT Mon Mar 11 2019 VFR conditions will continue today with winds near 5 kts becoming southerly. There is a chance for fog tonight with IFR visibility possible. In addition, southerly winds will to increase to near 10 kts by 18Z. KMSP... Skies will remain mostly clear through tonight. There is a slight chance for IFR visibility due to fog overnight into Tuesday. Otherwise, the main concern will be incoming stratus late Tuesday morning with the decreasing ceiling heights into the afternoon.
