Winds will be mostly east southeast at 5 to 10 knots through midday becoming mostly southeast to south this afternoon and tonight. 32/ee PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 454 AM CST Wed Feb 27 2019/ NEAR TERM /Now Through Wednesday night/...A large area of showers and thunderstorms, generated from increased isentropic upglide on the back side of broad surface ridge located further to the east, will continue to track east over the north central Gulf states and forecast area today, enhanced mostly this morning in response to a vigorous shortwave trof tracking quickly eastward over the lower MS river valley and north central Gulf states through this afternoon. The higher rain chances will continue over the adjacent waters and coastal areas through this afternoon with the better surface based instability remaining well offshore through tonight, generally south of a weak frontal boundary that eventually moves northward late tonight as a warm front. Model soundings reflect this pattern well showing modest instability remaining offshore this morning generally along and south of the weak frontal boundary that eventually moves northward towards the coast in response to a deeper upper trof and weak frontal boundary approaching from the west and northwest overnight and early Thu morning. As mentioned earlier the main concern with the stronger thunderstorms this morning and afternoon will be threat of hail due to wet-bulb zero values near or below 10kft though likely remaining below one inch in diameter. For late tonight and early Thu we will also continue to mention patchy fog mostly over the lower half of the forecast area as the boundary level continues to moisten in the lower levels. Temperatures will continue to be above seasonal levels through tonight. Highs today will range from the lower to middle 70s for most locations. Lows tonight will range from the lower to middle 60s for most inland locations and the middle 60s along the immediate coast. 32/ee SHORT TERM /Thursday Through Friday night/...A warm front that was expected to lift north across the forecast area Wednesday night will dissipate by early Thursday, but a cold front will settle into the interior southeastern states by the end of the day Thursday. This frontal boundary is then expected to remain nearly stationary just to the north of our forecast through Friday night. During the same time, a progressive pattern will continue aloft as a series of weak, fast-moving upper level shortwaves and impulses move eastward in a nearly zonal flow aloft. Still difficult to pin down the exact timing and strength of each wave and impulse, but these will interact with the surface boundary and the very moist airmass to the south of that boundary to keep a wet pattern in place over our area through Friday night. Scattered to numerous showers remain in the forecast Thursday, along with embedded thunderstorms, then become a little less widespread Thursday night through Friday night. The atmosphere will become more unstable across our forecast area on Thursday with MLCAPE values rising to 600 to 800 J/KG. The NAM, GFS, and ECMWF all also indicate mid and upper level lapse rates on Thursday ranging from 6.0 to near 7.0 C/KM. Forecast soundings also continue to show wet-bulb zero freezing levels ranging from 9000 to 10,000 feet throughout the day Thursday, along with some mid-layer dry air as well. So, any moderate updrafts that manage to develop on Thursday have the ability to produce some hail. Some strong gusty downdraft winds could also be possible. The Storm Prediction Center has outlooked our area with a Marginal Risk of strong to possibly severe storms (wind and hail potential) for Thursday, and with the parameters discussed above this seems reasonable. While overall confidence in severe weather on Thursday remains rather low, a few marginally severe storms could be possible. Daytime highs both Thursday and Friday in the low to mid 70s. Overnight lows ranging from upper 50s inland to the lower 60s coastal. 12/DS LONG TERM /Saturday Through Tuesday/...Little change in the pattern Saturday and Saturday night, but models coming into better agreement with the lingering front to the north likely moves south across our forecast area on Sunday with drier conditions early next week. Previous model runs were in a little more disagreement with the front, possibly not moving it through our area until Sunday night, so we will continue to monitor to see if the slightly faster solution continues. 12/DS MARINE...Patchy fog along with scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will continue over the marine area today and tonight mostly in response to a vigorous mid level disturbance tracking eastward over the northern Gulf. Expect mostly a light southerly wind flow through the remainder of week and into the weekend ahead of a cold front that is expected to move across the region by late Sunday.
