Area Forecast Discussion

.UPDATE...

Measurable precip has mostly exited the area at this point, with
just freezing drizzle and fog/freezing fog across the region. This
will continue into the early morning hours.

Initial look at 00Z guidance suggests a few small but meaningful
changes. First, the arrival time for precipitation is a little
slower than initially expected, perhaps more in the 12-14z
timeframe. This is good news for areas from Kenosha to Milwaukee,
as temperatures may rise above freezing before any meaningful
precip begins to fall. Further west, however, QPF has definitely
ticked up compared to earlier model runs. Still expect to see
widespread freezing rain with at least some sleet mixed in. Models
do show 50-75 J/KG of MUCAPE, which may be enough instability to
increase the convective sleet potential, cutting down somewhat on
freezing rain accretion. That said, it is looking like our
northern two or so tiers of counties (i.e., Sauk to Ozaukee and
north) is in line for a solid quarter to third of an inch of ice.
Will need to coordinate with surrounding WFOs, but certainly will
be considering upgrades to a Winter Storm Warning for this area
over the next few hours.

&&

.AVIATION(06Z TAFS)...

IFR ceilings will continue through the night, along with areas of
light freezing drizzle and fog. Ceilings may eventually fall to
LIFR in some areas toward morning. Winds overnight will remain
east to northeast.

More widespread precipitation then approaches the area in the
morning from the south, likely in the 11-13Z timeframe. For
Kenosha and Milwaukee, temperatures are expected to generally be
at or above freezing when the heavier precip arrives, thus just
rain is expected. Did include a short tempo group at MKE for
freezing rain, as temperatures will likely be within a degree or
of freezing.

Further west, precipitation will being as a mix of freezing rain
and sleet. Temperatures will gradually rise above freezing at
Waukesha around mid day, and Madison in early afternoon, causing
precipitation to transition to just rain. Colder air will
eventually build back in from the west as precip begins to wane,
so a period of wintry mix is again possible later in the
afternoon.

Winds on Thursday will initially be east to northeast, then will
become very gusty from the west late in the day, with gusts to
around 30 knots at times.

.PREV DISCUSSION... (Issued 901 PM CST Wed Feb 6 2019)

UPDATE...

Area of mostly freezing rain continues to push north through the
area. Have gotten a few reports of sleet mixed in, along with some
snow across the far north. Freezing rain amounts thus far have
ranged from a glaze to a few hundreths of an inch. Once the main
area of QPF moves through tonight, expect to see areas of light
freezing drizzle and freezing fog until the early morning, when
the more widespread precip moves into the area.

00Z NAM is a little beefier with QPF for Thursday compared to
earlier runs, as are some of the short term model runs (i.e, RAP
and HRRR). Forecast soundings remain right on the line between
sleet and freezing rain in many spots, leading to considerable
uncertainty with exact precip type and associated accumulations.
No major changes at this point, but will be watching guidance
closely through the rest of the evening.

MARINE...

Gale Watches for the northern half of the lake and nearshore have
been upgraded to Gale Warnings for Thursday evening and Thursday
night.

Strong low pressure will lift into the region tomorrow. Winds
ahead of the system won't be too strong, but west winds will
become quite gusty once the cold front moves through Thursday
afternoon and evening, with gales expected across the entire lake.
Gales will develop first Thursday afternoon across the southern
half, then expand to include the nearshore and finally northern
half of the lake. Gales to 40 knots are expected.

Rapidly falling temperatures will also result in a risk for heavy
freezing spray, and a warning may eventually be needed for that.

PREV DISCUSSION... (Issued 611 PM CST Wed Feb 6 2019)

UPDATE...

Initial batch of mostly freezing rain is overspreading the area
this evening. Some sleet pellets may mix in at times, especially
north and west of Madison, but p-type should predominately be
freezing rain. A few hundreths of an inch of accretion is expected
from this round.

Once this moves through this evening, much of the area should
experience just light freezing drizzle for most of the night.
More substantial  precipitation will arrive in the 5-6 AM
timeframe tomorrow morning, as low level WAA ramps up. No changes
to overall snow/sleet/freezing rain accumulations or
Warning/Advisory decisions, but will be closely watching the 00z
guidance as it comes in this evening.

AVIATION(00Z TAFS)...

Freezing rain, occasionally mixed with sleet, will overspread the
area this evening, along with IFR ceilings. This initial area of
organized precipitation will push out of the region mid to late
evening, with light freezing drizzle expected for most of the
night, along with lowering ceilings.

More widespread precipitation will overspread the area tomorrow
morning in the 11-12Z timeframe. P-type will be quite variable,
with sleet and freezing rain as the predominate type early on.
By mid morning, temperatures at MKE and ENW are expected to rise
just above freezing, which would change precip over to just rain.
At Waukesha, that change is expected to happen for a brief time
during the early afternoon hours. For now, currently expect
Madison to remain below freezing for the duration of the event.
With a mix of freezing rain and sleet during the day, eventually
with more snow mixing in by mid to late afternoon.

Precip begins to end later tomorrow afternoon and evening from
west to east, with more snow mixing in on the tail end as
temperatures rapidly cool. West winds will also increase
considerably tomorrow as a cold front sweeps through, with gusts
in the 25-30 knot range for much of tomorrow evening. IFR and LIFR
conditions will improve with time.

PREV DISCUSSION... (Issued 351 PM CST Wed Feb 6 2019)

SHORT TERM...

Tonight and Thursday...Forecast Confidence is Medium to High.

The initial surge of warm air advection ahead of developing low
pressure in the southern Plains will produce a wintery mix of
freezing rain and sleet across southern WI late this afternoon and
evening. Pushed up start time of Winter Weather Advisory to 4 pm
as this precipitation is knocking on our doorstep from northeast
IA. This initial warm air advection surge wanes later this
evening so looks like we will have a lull in the precip intensity
to freezing drizzle and/or pockets of light sleet. Introduced
small pops for thunder in the south overnight as well due to this
approaching strong push of warm air advection and weakly elevated
instability. Threat for light freezing drizzle or rain looks to
continue in the southeast through the morning commute so extended
the advisory through 15Z Thursday in this area. Otherwise, the
remainder of the area will remain in the Advisory through 00Z
Friday for the wintery mix. Leaning more on a blend of the GFS and
ECMWF which carry the surface low across northeast IL and across
Lake Michigan and southern Lake Michigan. This is fairly
consistent from earlier runs, but did notice that slightly colder
air lingers over the northwest CWA on Thursday as the low
pressure and upper trof deepen. This will result in higher
snowfall totals northwest of Madison, so bumped up amounts into
the 2 to 5 inch range in this area. It is possible some northern
and northwest areas may need to be upgraded to a Winter Storm
Warning pending the snowfall, ice accumulations approaching one
quarter inch and increasing winds on Thursday but not enough
confidence at this point to pull the trigger. The main synoptic
lift associated with the left exit region of the upper jet will be
late tonight into mid Thursday afternoon before the lingering
mid- level deformation with the upper low begins to wane into the
early evening. Blustery wind gusts up to 30 mph should develop
late Thursday, but wl hold off on heightening blowing snow issues
due to expected wetness of snow.

LONG TERM...

Thursday night through Saturday...Forecast confidence is high:

A little light snow or flurries will linger Thursday evening into
Thursday night as low pressure pulls away from the area. Temps
will crash Thursday night, with wind chills possibly dipping below
-20, especially in the west.

Strong high pressure behind the departing low will bring dry and
colder conditions back to southern Wisconsin for Friday and
Saturday. Highs may not reach 10 Friday...but will recover a bit
into the mid/upper teens for Saturday. Breezy winds Friday will
likely result in subzero wind chills through the day.

Sunday through Wednesday...Forecast confidence is low to medium:

A weak wave may bring some light snow accumulations to southern
Wisconsin on Sunday. Looks like the potential for a 1 to 3 inches
type event.

A much stronger system is then expected to move through the area
at some point Monday night through Tuesday night. Though there is
a good amount of uncertainty in the low track and timing several
days out, this system does have the potential to bring several
inches of snow to the area. Dry weather should return by
Wednesday.

Temps should recover a bit more early next week...climbing back

Will let the Dense Fog Advisory continue until 6 pm CST, as
webcams along shore still look hazy.

Winds and waves will generally be on the lower end into Thursday
as low pressure approaches the area. Strong westerly winds and
high waves are then expected behind the departing low later
Thursday into Friday morning. A Gale Warning has been issued for
the south half of the open waters from mid-afternoon Thursday
through the day Friday. A Gale Watch is in effect for the north
half, as there is less certainty in higher gusts and the gusts
will arrive a little later. Decided to go with a Gale Watch for
the nearshore waters as well.

Heavy freezing spray will be possible across Lake Michigan later
Thursday night through Friday night.

Winds will gradually drop off Friday night, with lighter winds
expected over the weekend.

An area of freezing rain, occasionally mixed with sleet, will
continue to push across the area this evening. This will
eventually transition to mostly freezing drizzle for the overnight
hours. More widespread wintry weather will arrive Thursday
morning.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Wednesday

The Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 9 AM CST Thursday
across far southeast Wisconsin, and until 6 PM CST Thursday across
the rest of the area. Far southeast Wisconsin should see a change
to all rain Thursday morning into the afternoon.

Freezing rain, sleet and snow will continue elsewhere Thursday.
Ice accumulations may reach up to 1/4 inch in parts of the area.
Hazardous travel conditions are expected. Snow accumulations of 3
to 5 inches will be possible northwest of Madison.

Colder temperatures will move into the region Thursday night into
Saturday morning. Wind chills Thursday night into Friday morning
and Friday night into Saturday morning may reach 15 below to 25
below zero.

The risk for ice jams and possible localized river flooding will
continue this week.

Light snow accumulations will be possible on Sunday, with a
stronger system possibly bringing several inches of snow to the
area early next week.
