.UPDATE...

Storms ahead of the cold front are looking like they'll be largely
sliding by to the north this afternoon. Based on the current
heating and increase in dewpoints, still think additional
development will be possible along and ahead of the front this
afternoon across southern Wisconsin. The latest mesoscale models
are suggesting this possibility as well. Severe storms are still a
possibility based on the environment.

The front should clear the southeast forecast area early evening,
which will bring an end to storm chances for the day.

.AVIATION(18Z TAFS)...

There will be a chance for storms until early evening as a cold
front moves through the area. Some of the storms may be severe.
Could see some lower visibilities in any moderate to heavy rain.

Breezy southwest winds ahead of the front will flip to the
northwest behind the front this afternoon into early evening,
then ease overnight as high pressure moves in. Quiet weather is
expected Friday under the high.

UPDATE...

A line of thunderstorms along a cold front continues to approach
from the northwest. Current timing puts this activity in the far
nw forecast area at noon, the Madison area between 1 and 2, and
the Milwaukee area by around 3. Given the moisture gets up here as
anticipated, the potential for severe storms still looks solid.

MARINE...

Gusty south to southwest winds are expected ahead of a cold front
today. A few gale force gusts will be possible in the north, with
a Gale Warning in effect until early evening. A Small Craft
Advisory is in effect for the same time period today.

High pressure will bring lighter winds to Lake Michigan Friday
into the weekend.

UPDATE...Going forecast still on track. Convection that has
fired within WAA/moist advection region in western Iowa will stay
off to our southwest. Still looking at decent shot of
afternoon/early evening strong/severe convection.

loop. overall, VFR conditions will prevail though breezy southwest
winds will develop this morning and shift to the northwest late in
the day with a cold frontal passage. VFR cu/cu congestus with
scattered tstorms expected with the frontal passage in the afternoon
and early evening. Low cigs and vsbys within and near storms. Clearing
skies after the cold frontal passage.

PREV DISCUSSION... (Issued 235 AM CDT THU AUG 29 2019)

SHORT TERM...

TODAY - Confidence...Medium.

Concern lies with the potential for afternoon/early evening severe
threat across the area. Southwest winds will draw warm and humid air
into the area ahead of an advancing cold front. Thermal ridge will
setup ahead of the boundary with temps reaching the 80s. Dew points
should reach the 60s though some concern that some of this could be
scaled back due to some dry air mix out which could result in a bump
in high temps and a reduction in the dews except for pooling that
would likely occur right along the front. The GFS MOS showing
low/mid 60s looks reasonable for now especially with the upstream
airmass poised to advect our way. 500 millibar progs show better
vorticity will be well north and most of that is
elongated/channelized. So best forcing will be driven by the lower
level frontal convergence interacting with the unstable airmass.
While mid level lapse rates are not ideal the bulk shear values are
impressive along with the 500-sfc crossover overlaid with the CAPE
in the southeast portion of the area. There is some concern that any
discrete cells could rotate. However if convection goes more linear
in nature then the primary threat is looking more like damaging
winds. Some variation on the CAM's on degree of
severity/organization as well as timing. There has been some move in
the models to speed things up a bit. Slight risk from SPC still
looks good and will retain the likely pops along with the warm temps
today in the airmass ahead of the front.

TONIGHT - Confidence...Medium.

Any lingering activity across the far southeast should quickly exit
the area as the front shifts south and northwest winds bring drier
air in. Overall should be a quiet night with high pressure ridging
through the northern Plains.

FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY - Forecast Confidence...High trending
Low.

Drier air settling into the region and broad-scale high pressure
will result in a pleasant, comfortable day across the area on
Friday, with lighter winds.  Daytime temps wl rise into the 70s,
with a developing lake breeze causing temps to stabilize in the
afternoon close to the lake.

For Friday night and Saturday, ECMWF has been showing the most
variability over the past several days with regards to the potential
isentropic precipitation and channeled vorticity event expected
during this period across the midwest. The 00Z ECWMF continues the
variability trend but is now in better agreement with other Medium
Range guidance in showing dry conditions persisting through Friday
night with high pressure lingering a bit longer over the area.
Removed precipitation chances except in the far west for later
Friday night.

Southern Wisconsin looks to remain on northern fringe of weak
baroclinic zone setting up over northern IL.  Both ECMWF and GFS
show an increase in precipitable water on Saturday with weak south
to southwest flow aloft.  For now, wl continue chance pops for light
showers on Saturday into Saturday evening, but confidence remains
low and variability likely to continue.  More than half of the
Global Ensemble Forecast System QPF plumes for KMKE continue to show
QPF on Saturday as well.  Still expecting light showers to move off
to the east by Sunday, with dry conditions lasting through Labor
Day.

LONG TERM...

SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY - Forecast Confidence...Low.

Steering flow through the holiday weekend will turn more west to
northwest with considerable uncertainty in the long range outlook
for the late periods into the middle of next week. Uncertainty from
handling of tropical system in southeast CONUS also having an effect
on outlook for upper Midwest and Great Lakes. GFS/GEM keeping
steering winds more zonal through next Tuesday and Wednesday, while
12Z ECMWF had been showing more amplified long wave trof over
central Canada extending into the Great Lakes and adjoining areas.
This would result in stronger and cooler northwest flow across WI.
Most Medium Range guidance show a frontal boundary approaching from
the north early next week with the latest ECMWF carrying front
through the area on Tuesday, hence stronger northwest winds. GFS/GEM
show stronger system carrying frontal boundary back to the north.
For now, wl continue small pops due to potential passing front, but
wl likely continue to see variability regarding this period next
several days.

AVIATION(09Z TAF UPDATE)...Quiet and clear skies this morning per IR
loop. overall, VFR conditions will prevail though breezy southwest
winds will develop this morning and shift to the northwest late in
the day with a cold frontal passage. VFR cu/cu congestus with
scattered tstorms expected with the frontal passage in the afternoon

MARINE...Breezy southwest winds will develop today as a wave of
low pressure and its cold front moves across Lake MI late in the
day. A few gale force wind gusts are possible over nrn Lake MI in
the afternoon with a Gale Warning in effect. A Small Craft Advisory
is in effect from Sheboygan to Winthrop Harbor. The breezy southwest
winds will veer to the northwest with the passage of the cold front
during the evening hours. Much lighter winds and lower wave heights
are expected for Friday through Sunday as high pressure moves from
the northern Great Plains through the Great Lakes.

Scattered thunderstorms will affect the near shore waters of Lake
Michigan this afternoon, between 1 pm CDT and 7 pm CDT. A few
severe storms are possible, producing large hail, damaging winds
and isolated waterspouts.

...A STRONG THUNDERSTORM WILL AFFECT NORTHERN SHEBOYGAN COUNTY...

At 210 PM CDT, a strong thunderstorm was located near Camp Rokilio
Scout Camp, or near Howards Grove, moving east at 55 mph.

Winds of 40 to 50 mph and penny size hail are possible with this
storm.

Locations impacted include...
Sheboygan, Howards Grove, Elkhart Lake, Haven and Johnsonville.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.
Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe
shelter inside a building or vehicle.
