.UPDATE...

Any light freezing drizzle over the northeast counties should be
ending, as enough ice gets into the air column. Expect on and off
light snow showers to occur today, as a 500 mb shortwave trough
and associated differential cyclonic vorticity advection moves
through. May see light snow accumulations under an inch,
especially in northern parts of the area. These light snow showers
should move out of the area by late afternoon or early evening.

Gusty west to northwest winds will develop this afternoon, after
the strong Arctic cold front moves through. This may lead to some
blowing snow across the area this afternoon into early evening.

Temperatures and wind chills will begin to plummet with the strong
cold air advection by middle to late afternoon. The Wind Chill
Advisory for tonight into Friday morning looks on track, with wind
chills of 20 below to 30 below zero expected.

Nearshore Waters...

Small Craft Advisory remains in effect from 18Z today through 18Z
Friday. Gusty west to northwest winds to 30 knots are expected
during this period, after a strong Arctic cold front moves through
the area. A few gusts near 35 knot gales are possible later this
afternoon into tonight, though not confident enough in frequent
gusts to gale force occurring to issue a Gale Warning. Any high
waves will be out over the open waters.

Winds may reach Small Craft Advisory levels again Saturday night
into Sunday, and for most of next week. Waves will build for
Monday into Monday night with onshore winds.

Heavy Freezing Spray Warning remains in effect from 00Z Thursday
until 12Z Saturday. The very cold airmass moving into the region
during this time, combined with the gusty winds at times, will
bring heavy freezing spray to the nearshore waters. These
conditions may linger through the weekend and into next week, with
very cold temperatures and gusty winds at times remaining over the
region.

Open Waters...

Gusty west to northwest winds to 30 knots are expected this
afternoon into Friday morning, after a strong Arctic cold front
moves through the area. A few gusts near 35 knot gales are
possible later this afternoon into tonight, though not confident

West to northwest winds to 25 knots are forecast for Saturday

build for Monday into Monday night and remain elevated into the
rest of next week.

Heavy Freezing Spray Warning remains in effect from 00Z Thursday

UPDATE...

The forecast is on track for the morning hours. Might need to
boost precip chances up though mid-morning into this afternoon as
confidence increases in upstream snowfall bringing a dusting to
the forecast area.

AVIATION(12Z TAFS)...

Clouds continue to move into the area from the west in response
to an approaching shortwave. This wave will bring MVFR ceilings
through the day...possibly IFR at times. Also, light snow is
expected, especially northeast of Madison where there could be up
to a half an inch. Most places will see at least some flurries.
Skies will gradually clear out this evening into tonight behind
the wave.

Winds will become gusty today as the wave and associated potent
cold front move through.

SHORT TERM...

Today through Friday...Forecast confidence is high:

A shortwave and potent cold front will move through the area
today. This will bring cloudy skies, gusty winds, and light snow
to southern Wisconsin. Increased precip chances and may need to
bump them up even more given upstream radar returns. Most places
will see at least flurries, with a dusting to half an inch
possible from Madison northeastward. The better chance for
steadier snow and the half an inch will be in the northeast
forecast area. Wind gusts of 30 to 35 mph this afternoon into the
evening will likely result in some blowing and drifting snow
given the fresh snowpack.

Temperatures will drop behind the front this afternoon,
particularly from Madison westward, with steadily falling
temperatures across the forecast area during the evening and
overnight. Temperatures of -5 to -15 are expected by daybreak,
mildest east and coldest in the west. Winds will ease overnight,
but there will be enough wind for bitterly cold wind chills of -20
to -30 this evening through Friday morning. Issued a Wind Chill
Advisory for this time period. Even though wind chills will rise
above advisory criteria Friday afternoon, they will likely only
top out in the -10 to -20 range with high temperatures struggling
up to around 0.

LONG TERM...

Friday night through Sunday...Forecast confidence high.

Temperatures Friday night will fall back into the teens below
zero. Winds will be lighter than Thursday night, which will help a
bit with wind chills, though even a light breeze will quickly
produce wind chills in the -20 to -25 degree range. Given that
potential, the Wind Chill Advisory may eventually need to be
extended through Saturday morning.

A few flurries or light snow showers will be possible Saturday,
especially over southwestern Wisconsin as another weak clipper
passes through the area. High Saturday will be in the mid single
digits above zero. The daytime hours on Sunday should be dry but
quite cold, with highs between 0 and 5 above.

Sunday Night through Tuesday...Forecast confidence low to medium.

A much stronger system is then expected to approach the area
starting Sunday night. All extended model guidance is in decent
agreement with the structure of this system, with a well-formed
mid level wave and fairly robust surface low. The biggest
uncertainty right now is with storm track, with some solutions
bringing the heaviest precipitation across far southern Wisconsin
into northern Illinois, while a few keep the heavier precip over
the central part of the state. Potentially significant snow
accumulations are possible with this system, but all will depend
on the eventual storm track. This will certainly be something to
keep a close eye on as we head into the weekend.

Tuesday Night through next Thursday...Forecast confidence high.

Behind this system, a very deep upper level low is expected to be
carved out over the Great Lakes. All signs point to another round
of impressively cold air coming into the area. 850 mb temps may
approach -40, corresponding to lows less than -20, and highs
likely remaining below zero (perhaps well below). It also looks to
remain fairly breezy during this stretch, which would likely
result in wind chill values of less than -30.

AVIATION(09Z TAFS)...

Clouds are beginning to move into the area from the west in
response to an approaching shortwave. This wave will bring MVFR
ceilings through the day...possibly IFR at times. Also, light
snow is expected, especially northeast of Madison where there
could be up to a half an inch. Most places will see at least some
flurries. Skies will gradually clear out this evening into tonight
behind the wave.

MARINE...

A potent cold front will move through today, bringing gusty west
to northwest winds to the area. Gusts to 30 knots are likely by
late afternoon across the south half of the lake, with gusts into
the low 30s across the lake during the evening and into the night.
A few gale force gusts will be possible, but it doesn't look like
widespread gales, so held off on a warning. Did keep the Small
Craft Advisory going across the nearshore waters for this
afternoon through Friday morning.

Heavy freezing spray is expected this evening through Friday
night, so upgraded the watch to a warning. More rounds of heavy
freezing spray will be possible over the weekend and into next
week as a very cold airmass remains over the region.

Easterly winds could approach gale force over the open waters
Monday as low pressure passes through the region. Small Craft
Advisory conditions look likely for the nearshore waters.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of east central
Wisconsin, south central Wisconsin and southeast Wisconsin.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

The coldest air of the season will build into the area later
today. Wind chills tonight will fall to around 30 degrees below
zero.  A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

The Arctic airmass will remain across the area through much of the
weekend. Wind chills during the day Friday will only improve to
between 10 and 15 degrees below zero. Wind chills will then fall
to between 20 and 25 degrees below zero by Saturday morning.

Another winter storm may then affect the Upper Mississippi River

Heavy Freezing Spray will remain a concern at times through the
coming week as gusty winds and a very cold airmass remains in
