.UPDATE...Extended Sheboygan and Ozaukee counties Winter Weather
Advisory through the afternoon due to expected periods of lake
effect snow showers. Impressive lake band upstream over Manitowoc
County, extending northeast should rotate through the two counties
as low level winds gradually back to the NNE. A quick 1 to 3
inches is possible in the eastern parts of the county. Interesting
enhanced band of snow showers from around West Bend extending
southwest toward Watertown showing up on 88D over last hour,
could be topographically generated by slight change in elevation.
This enhanced band beginning to weaken however.
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the other lakeshore
counties through this evening. An additional 1 to 4 inches is
likely. Total snowfall of 6 to 12 inches is likely, with a few
spots exceeding 12 inches, especially in eastern Kenosha county.
Favorable lift in good Dendritic Growth Zone as low level winds
back will result in a period of moderate to possibly heavy snow
showers along the lakeshore from Milwaukee south in the mid-late
afternoon.

UPDATE...Steady snow caused by the low pressure system moving
through the TN Valley has about lost its grip of southeast
Wisconsin. Mainly lake effect light snow and snow showers now
affecting eastern areas, with moderate snow showers over parts of
Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha counties. Snow showers will
continue through the afternoon, and likely into the evening in
eastern parts of the southern counties. Additional snowfall of 1
to 3 inches is likely with locally higher amounts. Winter Storm
Warning will remain in effect for the Milwaukee, Racine and
Kenosha counties. May extend Winter Weather Advisory for Sheboygan
and Ozaukee counties through the afternoon as well due to threat
for passing snow showers and additional inch or two in eastern
areas. Will likely let inland counties expire at 18Z.
Northeast low level winds begin to gradually back to the NNE by
late afternoon, resulting in the snow showers mainly focused on
eastern parts of the three far southeast counties.
MARINE...No changes at this time. Small Craft Advisory remains in
effect due to gusty northeast winds to 30 knots. The gusty winds
and cold temperatures will cause heavy freezing spray at times
across the northern open waters of Lake Michigan.

UPDATE...No changes to headlines. Snow continues this morning
with some bands of higher dbz's that reduce vsbys to under 1 mile
at times. things are starting to diminish a bit west of Madison
though still winds may keep some blowing snow going for a time.
Another band of higher dbz's lifting northward from northeast IL.
Primary lake band noted near Kewaunee and Manitowoc areas.

AVIATION(12Z TAFS)...Snow will persist for the morning though
some improvements in vsbys and ceilings noted west of Madison, but
still expecting some blowing/drifting snow even after snow eases
there. Otherwise another band will be lifting into se WI from nrn
IL. This will keep some IFR and LIFR vsbys going with this band
through mid morning or so. Keeping an eye on the lake band near
Manitowc and Kewaunee in ne WI as this may impact the eastern
locales later today and this evening.

SHORT TERM...
Today and Tonight - Confidence...Medium
Models are in good agreement in gradually ending the synoptic
scale lift/qpf from west to east this morning. Already seeing
evidence of lake effect bands from offshore of GRB and MTW
southward all the way into se WI. Going to extend the headlines in
our western cwa to 15z to account for lingering enhancement south
of KARX that is trending east. Was initially concerned that
warning for Waukesha might not work, however given ongoing inland
penetration of lake effect elements will leave things as is for
now. Otherwise for now headlines look good with fetch and
delta-T looking favorable for a continuation of LES potential
right into the evening hours. With time this evening the fetch
will become more favorable for just the far southeast counties
before it shifts to completely offshore. The fickle nature of
these convective lake bands makes it hard to pin down specific
amounts for specific locations but the potential will remain in
place well into the evening hours. Will let dayshift handle the
eastern headlines as synoptic snows depart and the focus shifts
to lake effect trends/timing.
Sunday into Monday Night - Confidence...Medium-High
Lake effect should mainly focus on the southern/eastern sides of
Lake Michigan going into Sunday as the low level flow loses any
easterly component to it. However, once the surface/low level
ridge axis passes late Sunday night into Monday, winds turn around
back to the southeast and appear to push the lake effect band back
west toward the lakefront in eastern WI. Given the quick turn
around and lake of fetch, do not anticipate this to be an
accumulating snow, but enough to warrant some low end POPs for a
few snow showers that could occur.
Otherwise, the main story will be with how cold temperatures get
with a fresh snow pack and northerly low level flow out of Canada.
850mb temperatures drop into the -17C to -21C range early Sunday
on into Monday. This will be the coldest air of the season thus
far (until the following weekend) with temperatures struggling to
get to double digits. With surface ridging in place the wind
chills should not drop too much but will still get into the -5 to
-15 range (above wind chill advisory threshold of -20F).
LONG TERM...
Tuesday into Wednesday - Confidence...Medium
Focus is on another system which will impact southern Wisconsin
Tuesday into potentially Wednesday. Some differences showing up
between the 19.00z GFS/ECMWF/GEM but they all do at least have a
surface low pressure system making the hook from northern Missouri
through northern Illinois and then toward central Lake Michigan.
The GFS is a bit faster than the ECMWF and spreads some
precipitation into southern Wisconsin already on Tuesday morning
while the ECMWF waits until the afternoon. Thanks to southerly low
level flow ahead of this system, there is a warm nose to the
thermal profile right around 850mb and as this warm nose pushes
into southern WI, it appears to push the colder portions of the
profile (around 950mb and 700mb) out of the ice creation zones, so
there could be some freezing drizzle/rain that could occur at the
onset. Based on GFS soundings, far SE WI (Kenosha) could see it
get above freezing from the surface on up through 800mb, so there
could be a turnover to rain/mix there. Further northwest (so the
rest of southern WI) should see mainly snow, particularly as the
low approaches and the lift increases. This appears to be a lower
snow to liquid ratio snow, so a bit on the wetter side compared to
the current snow that is falling. The GFS clears out the
precipitation by 6am Wednesday though the ECMWF develops a
secondary low and brings more snow through on Wednesday. Seems to
be a solid advisory type event at a minimum.
Thursday into Friday - Confidence...High
A very cold air mass will follow this system and bring
temperatures well below normal with 850mb temperatures pushing
-30C. Definitely the coldest air of the season for next weekend.
AVIATION(09Z TAFS)...Synoptic scale snows will continue this
morning with steady northeast winds, gusting at times to 25 knots.
Progs gradually diminish this snow through the morning from west
to east as the low pressure system pulls further away. The concern
will then shift to the lake effect snow bands. Already seeing
multiple bands across the far eastern cwa and expecting a more
elongated singular band later today into this evening. Any IFR
cigs/vsbys this morning will improve though localized IFR
conditions expected in any lake effect activity for eastern
locales this afternoon/evening. As we head into the later overnight
hours any lake effect potential will shift offshore.
MARINE...Windy conditions this period as low pressure works its
way into the Ohio valley today. Going headlines which include a
Small craft advisory for our nearshore waters and Heavy Freezing
Spray Warning for the northern open waters look good. Contemplated
a Gale Warning in the south but not confident in gales at this
time. Will be close through as we have some gusts reaching into
the low 30 knot range.
