...GALES AND HIGH WAVES EXPECTED THURSDAY...

.A strengthening low pressure system will pass well southeast of
Lake Michigan tonight and Thursday, bringing gusty winds and high
waves. Gusty north to northeast winds tonight will persist into 
Thursday night as they veer to the northwest then west as the low 
pushes off to the east. Gales are expected for the open waters of 
Lake Michigan late Thursday morning into Thursday evening. Expect 
waves to gradually build tonight and through the day Thursday.

.UPDATE...

Models do seem to be trending a bit southeast with this next
system so we will have to keep a close eye on just how much
snowfall could be expected, especially further northwest where
the highest uncertainty is.

.AVIATION(12Z TAFS)...

MVFR CIGS will push into the region from the southeast by mid
morning possibly bringing a little snow initially but will switch
to rain as temperatures warm today. Lower CIGS will initially
remain in far southeast Wisconsin but by mid to late afternoon the
system will begin to move fully into the region from the
southwest bringing MVFR CIGS across the region and possibly some
MVFR VSBYS as we will likely see some scattered rain showers. CIGS
will become IFR into the evening across much of southeast
Wisconsin with some areas possibly seeing periods of LIFR CIGS. In
addition, we expect temperatures to fall to near or just below
freezing which should allow for a switch this evening over to snow
from the west to the east. This will impact VSBYS for the period
with mostly MVFR VSBYS but IFR and even some LIFR VSBYS will be
possible in any heavier pockets of snow. This period of snow
beginning this evening will continue through the TAF period with
snow likely ending by 0z Friday.

SHORT TERM...

Today Through Thursday...Forecast Confidence is Medium...

A fairly large and expansive system is headed toward the region
with part of this system nudging into the area this morning. The
system direction is being driven by the upper levels as a very
strong upper level jet will be draped from eastern Nebraska up
into northern Quebec. This jet will remain fairly stationary
through the day today but will drift east with the approaching
upper level low Wednesday evening through Thursday.

The main forcing for precipitation through the day today will be
the tightening low level baroclinic zone with lots of moisture and
WAA in the low to mid levels. Models suggest the precipitation
will begin in the southeast with increasing chances further
northwest during the day. Much of this is expected to be rain
though a rain/snow mix is possible this morning while cooler
temperatures persist. In addition, we will be watching for some
lake influence this afternoon/evening as north/northeast winds
persist and surface to 850mb temperature differences over the lake
hover around 13-14 degree Celsius. Temperatures at this time will
likely be too warm for lake effect snow but some lake effect rain
will certainly be possible, primarily across southeast Wisconsin.

Into this evening and through the day Thursday, the main story
will become the upper level low, which will bring strong upper
level forcing across the region. The main concern for this period
will be snowfall as surface temperatures will quickly fall below
freezing with a mostly saturated dendritic growth zone. This
should allow for snow to begin reaching the ground by the mid
evening hours and likely continue through the day Thursday.
Temperatures near the lake will be a bit higher so we could see a
bit more of a mix closer to the lake, especially as
north/northeast winds push some of the warmer temps a bit inland.
With these north/northeast winds continuing through at least the
early evening some enhancement is possible, especially in the
southeast, with at least some additional moisture flux potentially
impacting snow amounts. Overall, snow accumulations are expected
to be from 1 to 5 inches across the region with highest amounts
expected toward the southeast away from the lake with some
uncertainty remaining, especially to the northwest.

Winds will increase starting tonight, and especially on Thursday,
as deepening low pressure lifts northeast through the Ohio Valley.
Strong north-east flow tonight and Thursday will result in
building waves along the Lake Michigan shoreline, especially from
Milwaukee south into northern Illinois. Some lakeshore flooding
will be possible given the high waves and elevated lake levels,
and a Lakeshore Flood Advisory is in effect starting late tonight.

LONG TERM...

Thursday Night through Saturday...Forecast Confidence High...

Any lingering snow should end early Thursday evening, with a cold
night on tap Thursday night into Friday morning, with lows in the
low 20s.

Cool and somewhat blustery conditions are expected for Friday and
Saturday. Another shortwave passing through the region Friday
evening may bring a smattering of light rain/snow mix to the area,
but it shouldn't amount to anything impactful. Highs both days
will be in the mid to upper 30s, but brisk west winds will keep
wind chills in the 20s.

Sunday into Mid Week Next Week...Forecast Confidence Moderate...

High pressure is expected to move from the Ozarks into the Ohio
Valley Sunday, with southerly flow developing across the region in
response. This will help boost temps by a couple of degrees, with
readings expected to reach the low 40s.

The parade of shortwaves will continue with another passage Sunday
night, and likely again during the early to middle part of next
week. With continued cyclonic flow across the region, temperatures
look to remain below average through at least the latter portion
of next workweek.

AVIATION(09Z TAFS)...

Moisture will surge north into far southeast Wisconsin after 12z
today with MVFR CIGS arriving by mid morning. The lower CIGS will
remain confined to the far southeast until mid afternoon.
Thereafter, they will begin to spread across all of southern
Wisconsin through the afternoon and evening. Look for a wintry mix
of rain and snow to push into the far southeast after 12z
today, then transition over to all rain by mid to late morning as
warmer temps move in. Little to no accumulation is expected. More
widespread rainfall and the lower CIGS/VSBYS will push across the
area later this afternoon and tonight. The precipitation will
transition back to snow from west to east after about 03z Thu.

MARINE...

Today will remain mostly quiet with showers expending across the
southern half of the lake and a system pushes in. This system will
initially bring breezy northeast winds by this afternoon evening.
Winds will slowly drift to the northwest on Thursday but winds
will become very strong, likely bringing gale force winds through
much of the the day Thursday across the southern half of the lake.
Thus, we have issued a Gale Watch from 12z Thursday through 03z
Friday. In addition, nearshore winds will be breezy so there is a
Small Craft Advisory in effect this afternoon/evening through
Thursday evening.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of east central
Wisconsin, south central Wisconsin and southeast Wisconsin.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Another round of accumulating snow is expected to overspread the
area starting this evening, continuing through the night and
during the day Thursday. Between one and five inches of snow will
be possible, with the heaviest amounts currently expected to fall
across southeastern Wisconsin. Some locations across this area
could see slightly higher amounts. Further to the northwest,
lower amounts are expected, and there is considerable uncertainty
as to where exactly the northwestern edge of the snow will set up.
A Winter Weather Advisory may be issued later today, once
additional forecast details become more clear.

Strong north to northeast winds are expected to develop over Lake
Michigan starting later tonight, continuing into Thursday. This
onshore flow will result in building waves across the lakeshore
area, with a risk for minor flooding. A Lakeshore Flood Advisory
is in effect starting late tonight for areas from Milwaukee
southward.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Wet, slushy snow will continue across the area on Thursday,
ending Thursday night. A total of one to five inches of snow is
expected, with a few locally higher amounts possible over
southeastern Wisconsin.
