.Strong low pressure will track just southeast of Lake Michigan
tonight. A tight pressure gradient associated with the low will
result in strong, gusty winds across Lake Michigan tonight. Gale 
force gusts are expected over portions of the southern Open 
Waters of Lake Michigan as well as the near shore waters south of 
North Point Light. Wave heights will build to 4 to 8 feet. The 
winds will back to the north and then northwest later tonight as 
the low pressure moves across Lower Michigan.

.AVIATION(12Z TAFS)...

Southeast winds will increase throughout the day and then turn to
the northeast this evening as strong low pressure slides across
southern Lake Michigan late this evening. Look for lowering
ceilings and rain to spread into southeast WI this afternoon and
expand into south central WI this evening as the system clips the
region. Ceilings and visibility will drop to IFR levels this
evening and gradually improve during the overnight hours. Lowest
ceilings and highest rainfall rates will be near the lakeshore
between Milwaukee and Kenosha.

SHORT TERM...

Today through Sunday...Forecast Confidence is Medium.

Surface low pressure over Arkansas will deepen as it quickly lifts
northward today. It will cross far southeast Lake Michigan late
this evening before weakening as it heads toward Lake Huron
Sunday. Rain on the northwest side of the low will spread westward
into south central Wisconsin this afternoon and evening. The
forecast timing has not changed much, maybe a little later with
the arrival time and a little later to exit the area. This is a
very dynamic system with a coupled Upper Jet structure and deep
upward vertical motion/Omega over southeast WI, along with sloped
frontogenesis.

Total rainfall amounts may exceed an inch in far southeast WI from
Milwaukee County to inland Kenosha County. Areas west of Madison
should see less than a quarter inch, as there will be a sharp
cutoff on the west edge of the precip shield.

With this system remaining progressive, the easterly winds will
slowly back, so a prolonged period of stronger onshore winds is
not expected, reducing wave heights and erosion potential along
the lakeshore areas.

LONG TERM...

Sunday Night through Tuesday...Forecast Confidence - Medium.

A dry start to Monday morning as weak high pressure moves across
the area. We'll stay under a mainly NW flow regime for Sun Night
and Monday, which will keeps temps on the cooler side. The focus
for early week quickly turns to a system moving out of the SW US
and into the plains Monday evening with it shifting into the Great
Lakes by Tuesday morning. There continues to be some disagreement
in guidance as to the speed and timing with the GFS/NAM/GEM the
fastest models with all precip out of area by Tuesday morning.
The slower ECMWF ends up bring a larger swath of QPF through the
area and will be something to keep an eye on as the surface low
track is closer to the area. The faster guidance has the low
tracking further south and would lead to lower QPF amounts. In
either case being on the northern side of the system it will put
southern WI in a good region for rain/snow Monday night into
Tuesday. Due to the lingering uncertainty don't want to jump on
any particular run just yet. Ensemble guidance does suggest the
potential for snow accums but whether or not any of the snow can
accumulate on the still warmer ground remains uncertain. In either
case this system bears watching as much of the activity occurs
during the overnight and there is potential for some impacts to
the morning commute on Tuesday.

Going through the day Tuesday the system shifts east but winds
aloft remain out of the SW and should keep some veil of clouds
over the region. So, not expecting much recovery in highs for
Tuesday with many sites staying around 40 degrees.

Tuesday night through Friday...Forecast Confidence - Low.

The pattern for much of the week consists of troughing across the
western CONUS and riding along the Atlantic coast. A couple of
shortwaves ejecting out of the western trough could bring slight
chances of precip through the week but most guidance keeps precip
further south. We'll likely just end up with continued clouds and
cooler temps with highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s each day and
lows in the 20s.

As we head into the Thu/Fri time period models continue to
struggle in just how the western trough breaks down and kicks
east. The GFS is more progressive with this system and only ends
up clipping the area. The ECMWF on the other hand strengthens the
system and continues to show it tracking over the area. There are
a few subtle changes from run to run with the ECMWF but it's still
suggesting a rather potent low crossing the area. For now will
continue to stick with a middle of the road approach until models
can come into better agreement.

AVIATION(09Z TAFS)...

Strong low pressure will slide across far southeast Lake Michigan
late this evening. Look for lowering ceilings and rain to spread
into southeast WI this afternoon and expand into south central
WI this evening as the system clips the region. Ceilings and

MARINE...

Strong low pressure will slide across far southeast Lake Michigan
late this evening. This will bring a period of gusty winds to the
south half of the lake from this afternoon through Sunday morning.
Gale force gusts are possible over the south half this evening
when winds are out of the north-northeast, and again during the
overnight hours after winds shift to the northwest.

Models show that winds in the 1000-2000 ft level are in the 35 to
40 kt range, but there is not enough confidence in those higher winds
reaching the surface, so we will not issue a Gale headline at this
time.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for the nearshore waters from
Sheboygan Wisconsin to Winthrop Harbor Illinois.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

A strong low pressure will track northeast across the southern
basin of the lake tonight. Breezy easterly winds will develop and
back to the north, then to the northwest through the overnight. Small
Craft Advisory is in effect starting this afternoon and
continuing through Sunday morning. Waves may build to 3 to 6 feet.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

Breezy northwesterly winds diminish through the day Sunday with a
Small Craft Advisory in effect until 10 AM Sunday.

Gusty northwesterly winds are possible Tuesday and Friday.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for the open waters of Lake Michigan.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Relatively strong low pressure will track northeast across far
southern Lake Michigan toward Lake Huron for tonight into Sunday
morning. Breezy easterly winds will develop over the southern half
of the lake this afternoon and evening, then back northwesterly
late tonight. Gusts could approach Gales force across the southern
half of the lake late tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

Wind gusts could approach gales on Friday but confidence is low at
this time.
