.UPDATE...The heavier rain showers will move out of ern WI by
17-18Z but sct showers will continue as the upper wave and mid
level frontogenesis brings continued lift to ern WI. Sfc temps
will continue to cool into the 40s over ern WI via the strong cold
advection. The rain should completely end by late afternoon over
ern WI.

.MARINE...The cold front with a gusty wind shift to the southwest
is currently approaching the western shore of Lake MI. The cold
front will gradually move across all of Lake MI today with breezy
west winds over much of the lake by the middle to late afternoon.
Strong low pressure that is responsible for the breezy winds will
remain over nrn MN into Saturday night and then weaken and move
east across Ontario for Sun-Mon. The strongest winds over the open

UPDATE...

The cold front is marching eastward through southern Wisconsin
early this morning. It is upon Madison as we speak. Expect a
temperature drop of 10 to 15 degrees in 20 minutes with westerly wind
gusts on the order of 20 to 25 mph. The frontal boundary is
vaguely apparent on the radar. There are scattered showers popping
up within the frontal vicinity.

Light showers are possible until the main mid level wave pushes
through, ending from west to east around mid afternoon. We should
start to see some breaks in clouds over southeast WI this
afternoon and eventually across most of southern WI by this
evening and dry air wraps into the system.

AVIATION(12Z TAFS)...

IFR ceilings are spreading into southern WI just ahead of the cold
front. IFR ceilings will linger behind the cold front this morning
and gradually lift to MVFR for this afternoon. Expect skies to
clear out for most of the area this evening. VFR stratocumulus
clouds are expected Saturday, mainly in the afternoon.

Winds will shift to the west with the cold front this morning and
remain gusty through early evening. Gusts should diminish somewhat
overnight. Even higher winds are expected Saturday afternoon with
another surge of cold air.

SHORT TERM...

Today and Tonight...Forecast Confidence is Medium to High.

Lines of showers with a few rumbles of thunder are tracking
through southern WI overnight out ahead of strong low pressure
stationed over northern MN. The cold front is apparent with a
radar fine line and it is currently over western WI. There is at
least a 10 degree temperature drop behind the front, along with
gusty 23st winds. Peak winds have been around 25 to 27 kt with
the frontal passage on average, with slightly lower gusts behind
it. There are a few showers along the front and we can see some
developing behind it back into Iowa.

We should start to see some breaks in clouds over southeast WI
this afternoon and eventually across most of southern WI by this
evening and dry air wraps into the system. Despite elevated winds
all night, temperatures are expected to drop into the lower 30s
with efficient cold air advection. Confidence is high enough to
upgrade the Freeze Watch to a Freeze Warning for tonight.
Temperatures should be low enough just west of the Kettle
Moraine to support expanding that Freeze Warning eastward into
Dodge, Jefferson, and Walworth counties. Fond du Lac county is
still uncertain, but they may need a freeze warning as well.

LONG TERM...

Saturday through Monday...Forecast Confidence is Medium to High.

It'll be a cold start to the weekend with much of the area waking
up Saturday morning to temps below to slightly above freezing and
wind chills in the lower 20s. The strong upper low over northern
MN will wobble S/ESE towards Lake Superior during the day
Saturday. An increase in the pressure gradient across the area
is expected during the day and wind gusts ramp up with gusts up
to 35 mph. That is going to make for a fairly raw day compared to
what we've been used to with wind chills staying in the 30s.
There should be enough clearing to allow highs to warm into the
40s. Then as a wave rotates around the base of the upper low
during the afternoon and into the overnight hours, cloud cover
will increase and so will rain chances. The better chances will be
across the northern half of the area, closer to the low Saturday
evening into Sunday. Forecast soundings suggest a deep enough
layer of moisture will exist for snow. The only question is going
to be the temps near the surface. Models have been consistent in
showing values holding steady in the lower 40s through midnight,
then gradually lowering into the 30s Sunday morning. The better
rain chances will occur in the window around midnight, which would
suggest much of the area will see more liquid than snow. The
exception being locations in central WI where temps cool off
quicker and a mix of rain/snow is likely.

The upper low remains parked to the north on Sunday and with
mostly cloudy skies, not expecting much recovery in temps during
the day. Highs will only warm into the lower 40s. It won't be
nearly as windy as Saturday but wind chills are still forecast to
be in the 30s. With the system still in close proximity to the
area it's possible we'll see a few flurries. Heading into early
next week, high pressure moves in just west of the area, which
will allow for clearing skies and temps warming into the upper 40s
to near 50 for Monday.

Monday night through Friday...Forecast Confidence is Medium.

A quick moving shortwave will shift out of the Dakotas and into
the Great Lakes region Monday night through Tuesday night. A weak
surface low develops in response to this wave and tracks along the
IL/WI border. Winds briefly turn southerly on Tuesday and weak WAA
will allow temps to warm into the low to mid 50s. Scattered
showers are forecast during the afternoon and evening hours on
Tuesday associated with the surface low.

Heading into the middle of the week, high pressure moves from the
plains into the OH Valley. We hold onto the NW flow regime Wed/Thu
keeping temps on the cooler side, highs in the 40s/50s. Winds
begin to shift to the south on Friday with temps warming back
towards normal (upper 50s to lower 60s).

AVIATION(09Z TAFS)...

MARINE...

Strong low pressure will sit over northern Minnesota through the
weekend. Southeast winds will continue to increase in strength
through late morning, but should remain just below gales. A strong
cold front will cross Lake Michigan this morning into the
afternoon which will bring an abrupt wind shift to the west-
southwest and possible gale force gusts.

Westerly gales are likely over Lake Michigan Saturday afternoon
and night. Highest winds up to 40 or maybe 45 kt are expected over
the south half. A Gale Watch is in effect. Gusty winds (below
gales) will continue for Sunday with lighter winds afterward as
the low pressure area weakens and moves away.

In addition, there will be a risk for waterspouts starting Sunday,
and possibly continuing into Monday. The risk will be highest
across the northern half to two thirds of the lake.
