.AVIATION(00Z TAFS)...
Gusty northwest winds should quickly diminish by 01Z to 02Z
Saturday, with loss of mixing from daytime heating. Lighter
northwest winds are then expected this evening, becoming northeast
later tonight. High clouds will gradually spread east into the
area later tonight.
Snow will move into the area from west to east Saturday morning,
reaching Madison around 13Z, and the eastern terminals around 15Z
to 16Z. A mix of rain/snow may briefly occur at the onset of the
precipitation.
Moderate to heavy snow is expected from late morning through the
afternoon. Snowfall rates of up to 1 inch per hour are possible
during this time. It will be a wet and dense type of snow, with
slushy accumulations of an inch or two on runways and hard
surfaces. Could get some thunder with the snow during this time.
Ceilings and visibility values should drop quickly below alternate
minimums during this period, with visibility values of 1/4 to 1/2
mile possible in heavy snow bands.
Gusty east northeast winds will develop by Saturday afternoon,
becoming northeast late Saturday afternoon and lingering Saturday
night. This will lead to some blowing snow.
The snow will become light in the evening, ending between 02Z and
05Z Sunday from west to east across the area. Ceilings and
visibility values should improve to VFR category by late evening.
Total snow accumulations should be in the 5 to 10 inch range
across the terminals. Locally higher amounts may occur.

SHORT TERM...
Rest of this Afternoon through Tonight...Forecast Confidence
High...
A windy but otherwise pleasant day is underway this afternoon,
with mid afternoon temperatures in the upper 50s to around 60
degrees. Gusty northwest winds will diminish rather quickly this
evening as high pressure briefly passes through the area.
Saturday and Saturday Night...Forecast Confidence Moderate to
High...
The main focus, of course, is on snow potential for tomorrow. Deep
low pressure will quickly move east across the I-80 corridor in
Nebraska and Iowa on Saturday, with a large area of snow
overspreading the forecast area from west to east during the
morning hours. Strong lift associated with a well-developed TROWAL
and deep frontogenetical circulation will combine with plentiful
moisture to produce an area of moderate to heavy snow across
southern Wisconsin from tomorrow morning through the early evening
hours. Some periods of intense snow banding will be possible
across the area tomorrow, especially during the afternoon. Along
with very heavy snowfall rates in excess of 1" per hour, elevated
instability may result in a few instances of thundersnow.
At this point, it looks like the heaviest axis of snow will fall
along and south of a line from the Spring Green/Dodgeville area
east to Madison, and then southeast to Whitewater and Racine. 5-10
inches of snow will be possible across this area, and it's
plausible that a few spots could see amounts approach a foot,
especially where the heaviest band sets up. The bulk of
accumulation will be on elevated and grassy surfaces, though at
least a few inches of wet, heavy slush is likely on area roadways,
resulting in considerable travel impacts. Those roads that are
less traveled will likely see higher accums compared to
highways/interstates.
Lower, though still significant amounts of snow are expected north
and south of the heaviest band.
A Winter Storm Warning will be in effect for a large portion of
the area starting Saturday morning, continuing through mid evening
(though western parts of the Warning will likely be able to be
cancelled a little early). A Winter Weather Advisory will be in
effect for a few counties north of the Warning area, where
forecast storm totals are lower.
LONG TERM...
High pressure will move across the area on Sunday, with
temperatures expected to be in the mid 40s. Another wave will
approach the area Sunday night, with rain overspreading the area
late Sunday night into Monday morning. The bulk of the rain looks
to end by Monday afternoon, though a few showers may persist into
the evening hours. Highs Monday will range from the upper 40s to
low to mid 50s.
An active pattern looks to continue for most of the week, with
additional chances for rain on Tuesday and Wednesday, and again
Thursday and Friday. Temperatures will be on the cool side, with
highs each day generally in the 50s, and lows in the 40s.
AVIATION(21Z TAF Update)...
Gusty northwest winds will continue through the rest of this
afternoon, with frequent 25 to 30 knot gusts. Winds will fall off
quickly this evening, as a fast moving area of high pressure moves
through the area.
Winds will become southeasterly to easterly on Saturday, and then
northeasterly Saturday evening. Snow will overspread the area
from the west Saturday morning, with periods of moderate to heavy
snow possible, especially from late morning through the afternoon
hours. Up to an inch per hour of accumulation will be possible.
Snow will be very wet and dense in nature, with pavement surfaces
seeing slushy accumulation.
Snow will end from west to east tomorrow evening.
MARINE...
Northwest gales will continue into tonight across the northern
half of the lake, with gusts to around 30 knots across the
nearshore waters. Winds will gradually diminish tonight, before
becoming easterly on Saturday.
Northeast winds then increase tomorrow evening, with gales likely
across the south half, where a Gale Watch will be in effect
beginning at 7 PM. For the nearshore, a Small Craft Advisory will
be needed, and will need to watch winds closely for gales.
