Area Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...

Early this morning...

Winds are light at the surface and aloft early this morning, but
expect the winds aloft to increase out of the northwest over the
next couple of hours. This will help any patchy fog diminish
by sunrise.

Today and Tonight...Forecast Confidence is High.

It will be a windy but sunny day across southern WI. Northwest
winds will be in the 15 to 20 mph range with gusts up to around 30
mph. This is below the wind advisory criteria (gusts over 45 mph).
High temperatures should be around 60 this afternoon.

Low pressure over western Lake Erie will slide east today as high
pressure guilds into the Northern Plains. This will put southern
WI in a tight pressure gradient and thus allow for gusty winds.
Cyclonic flow and lingering moisture may give us some scattered
cumulus clouds over east central and southeast WI this afternoon.

Look for winds to diminish early in the evening as the pressure
gradient relaxes. High cloud will begin to spread in overnight
ahead of the next system. Low temperatures in the 30s are
expected, with coldest temps around 33 degrees toward east central
WI.

Saturday into Saturday night...Forecast confidence is high.

A winter storm watch has been posted for far southern Wisconsin
for roughly Saturday into Saturday evening.

There has not been any significant deviation from the previous
forecast. The previously highlighted forcing elements have not
changed in a meaningful way. There is a potent, fast moving mid
level short wave tied into an impressive coupled upper jet. The
deep omega fields and frontogenesis are strong. The column
moisture has increased slightly...especially near the state line.
The atmosphere is initially dry in the lower portion of the
atmosphere, allowing for rapid wet bulbing below freezing
everywhere except at the surface where temps will be in the lower
to mid 30s. Thus, thankfully, there is no complicating elevated
warm layer. It looks like nearly all this precip will fall as
snow...a little will be lost to evaporation initially, but not
much. Given the strong dynamics, snowfall rates will be high and
will overcome high late April sun angle and mid 30s temp
influence. Ensembles give a large range in potential snowfall. The
aggregate model probabilities give strong support to the previous
forecast snow amounts. There will be a fairly large area of 4 to
6 inches, with a narrow band of up to 10 inches not out of the
question...especially from Madison on west. This banded, heavier
stuff will be assessed more in the very short term as the event
unfolds.

The peak snowfall will run from around mid morning through early
to mid evening. The earlier ending will be west of Madison, later
in the Milwaukee area.

Given the warm pavement temperatures, we'll see melting, but there
will be a rapid slushy accumulation. This slushy stuff will be
difficult to travel in. Impact will likely be high.

Lows Saturday night will fall into the mid 20s to lower 30s. That
slush will then freeze overnight. April sunshine and highs in the
mid to upper 40s will cause a lot of the snow to melt on Sunday.

Sunday...Forecast confidence is high.

There is good agreement that it will be dry as high pressure very
briefly moves through the area. Despite sunshine, the expected
snowcover will keep temps well below normal. As mentioned above,
that sunshine coupled with temps in the 40s will do a lot to melt
the snow.

Sunday night through Friday...Forecast confidence is medium.

The models are getting into a tighter agreement for next week...at
least the early half of the week. A series of low pressure
systems will bring us more rainfall. Temps will be warm enough to
keep it all rain. We should see rain move through Sunday night and
Monday. Tuesday looks to be dry right now. Another round of rain
for Tuesday night and Wednesday. Thursday and Friday look
uncertain as the guidance begins to diverge. There is more rain
potential toward the end of next week. Temps begin the week below
normal, but climb toward seasonal normals by the end of next week.

.AVIATION(09Z TAF Update)...

Patchy fog developing under the clearing skies and light winds
will diminish by sunrise as winds increase out of the northwest.
A brief period of low level wind shear is possible as these
northwest winds increase aloft before they increase at the ground.
Winds will become gusty out of the northwest by mid morning and
diminish later this evening. Scattered cumulus clouds are
possible across east central and far southeast WI this afternoon.

Accumulating snow is expected on Saturday. That will spread into
Madison by late morning and Milwaukee by early afternoon. The axis
of heaviest snow looks like it will be along the I-94 corridor
and highest snowfall rates should be during the afternoon hours,
perhaps lingering into the early evening in southeast WI.

Although the snow is falling during the day in late April,
snowfall rates should be able to overcome warm pavement and
accumulate thick slush on runways.

.MARINE...

Nearshore... Gusty northwest winds are expected over the nearshore
waters of southeast WI today as low pressure exits to the east and
high pressure builds into the Northern Plains. A potent low
pressure system tracking across Illinois on Saturday will bring
strong easterly winds to the nearshore areas Saturday afternoon
and evening. Gale force gusts are possible south of Milwaukee.

Open Lake... Northwest gales are expected across northern Lake
Michigan this afternoon and evening as low pressure tracks from
western Lake Erie to western Quebec. These should be confined to
just north of Door County and Manistee. The rest of the lake will
just have steady northwest winds around 20 kt.

A potent low pressure system tracking across Illinois on Saturday
will bring easterly gales to the southern Lake Michigan Saturday
afternoon and evening. These should be confined to just south of
Milwaukee and Muskegon.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of east central
Wisconsin, south central Wisconsin and southeast Wisconsin.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Thursday

Snow accumulations are very likely Saturday afternoon and
evening with amounts in the 3 to 8 inch range possible. The bulk
of the snow will accumulate on colder surfaces and grassy areas.
Despite warmer pavement temperatures, a slushy accumulation is
expected on roads, especially Saturday evening. There remains
uncertainty regarding the exact track and low level thermal
profile of the atmosphere as this late April storm passes by. Stay
on top of the latest forecast, especially if traveling across the
region on Saturday.

A Small Craft Advisory is in effect Friday for brisk northwest
winds from 9 AM to 5 PM.

Strong east to northeast winds are expected Saturday through
Saturday night as a potent low pressure system tracks south of
Lake Michigan. A few Gale Gusts are possible...especially south of
Milwaukee.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Thursday

A Gale Watch is in effect from 3 PM to 10 PM Friday as gusty
northwest winds from 35 to 40 knots will impact the far northern
portion of the lake.

A potent low pressure system will track south of Lake Michigan
Saturday into Saturday night. Look for brisk easterly winds on
Saturday followed by strong northeast winds Saturday night. Winds
will likely reach Gale force levels over the southern 1/3 of the
Lake Michigan basin Saturday night, diminishing by sunrise on
Sunday.
