* WINDS: East to northeast winds 15 to 20 knots with higher gusts
  this evening veering south by sunrise Friday. Southwest winds
  around 20 knots gusting to near gale force for late Friday
  morning through the afternoon. A Gale Warning may be needed. 

* WAVES: 5 to 9 feet subsiding to 2 to 4 feet just after sunrise
  Friday.

A Small Craft Advisory means that wind speeds of 21 to 33 knots
are expected to produce hazardous wave conditions to small craft.

that the majority of roads would remain just wet for the daytime
hours with any snow accum on grassy or elevated surfaces.

expected to move into ern WI toward sunrise Wednesday. During the
morning daylight hours, stratus clouds and rain and snow will

may not reach central WI until late afternoon. Cigs will
eventually fall to 400-1000 feet for late Wed afternoon and

likely develop as strong low pressure moves from the central Great
Plains to southern Minnesota.

PREV DISCUSSION... (Issued 722 PM CDT Tue Apr 9 2019)

UPDATE...Fast moving cold front is moving quickly down the lake
with much of the MKE metro area already in the 40s. The front
farther inland extends from near WI Dells to Watertown and will
continue swd to the IL border around 02Z. Low temps for tnt in the
lower 30s looks good.

For Wed, the initial round of mid level warm advection and
frontogenesis may be delayed 2-4 hours from the current forecast
via the latest HRRR and the 18Z NAM. Will not commit to this yet,
but this would support sfc temps warm enough for at least a
mixture of rain and snow versus all snow. The current forecast
does reflect the mixture well. There would be an even higher
likelihood that the majority of roads would remain just wet for
the daytime hours with any snow accum on grassy or elevated
surfaces.

SHORT TERM...

Tonight And Wednesday...Forecast Confidence Is Medium.

May see a few showers develop in the east parts of the area late
this afternoon, with a passing shortwave to the northeast of the
area. Cold front will move south/southeast through the area into
this evening, shifting gusty winds to the north.

The 12Z ECMWF is now much slower with bringing QPF into the
southwest parts of the area later tonight into Wednesday morning.
Other synoptic and mesoscale models have trended somewhat in this
direction. Thus, the current timing of the frontogenesis response
at 850 mb to 700 mb with the expected precipitation may be a bit
too fast. It should eventually move in Wednesday morning and into
the afternoon across the area.

The temperatures at the surface will be key for snow, or
rain/snow, for Wednesday, Went with a blend of
CONSShort/CONSRaw/SuperBlend temperatures for later tonight into
Wednesday, which keep values in the 34 to 36 degree range with the
main band of precipitation. It is possible dynamic cooling could
bring surface temperatures down below 34 degrees, which would give
more snow than a rain/snow mix.

Any accumulations will be mainly on grassy areas, with surface
temperatures on roads warm from the past few days. Have a 1 to 2
inch range for Wednesday for now. Certainly some uncertainty here,
so keep up with the forecast.

LONG TERM...

Wednesday Night through Thursday... Forecast Confidence is Medium.

The 850-600mb warm front will precede the surface front by a long
shot Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Warm air advection
will continue to shift the axis of precip northward through the
evening. We will continue to see that rain/snow mix with some wet
snow likely accumulating on at least grassy surfaces (slush on
roadways) over the northern forecast area, from the Dells to the
Montello area through Sheboygan.

Overnight, the warm nose aloft will be quite pronounced across
southern WI into Thu morning. This will give us a chance for some
freezing rain during this period when surface temperatures and
dewpoints will be right around the freezing mark. It will be dark,
so road temps will have a chance to drop to around freezing as
well. This, along with the slush, could lead to a hazardous
Thursday morning commute. The worst of it will be NORTH of the
I-94 corridor from Madison to Milwaukee and straight west to Lone
Rock.

Despite the strong easterly winds all day Thursday and 925mb temps
remaining below freezing, surface temps should gradually rise
above freezing, and precip will change over to all rain from south
to north. There is a chance for thunderstorms across all of
southern WI Thursday afternoon and evening as the upper low
approaches and lapse rates steepen aloft.

The surface front will finally arrive at the WI/IL border
early Thursday evening, but there is a good chance that the
occluded front will be just to the east of southeast WI and we
would miss the severe thunderstorm potential. Right now, SPC has
the Marginal Risk right up to the WI/IL border for Day 3.

We are going to have a prolonged period of rain/liquid with this
system that totals of 1.5 to 2 inches. With the frost out of the
ground, most of the rain will soak right in. Rivers are expected
to respond and several could reach Moderate Flood Stage once
again.

Thursday Night through Friday... Forecast Confidence is Medium.

The dry slot will reach us Thursday night and the wrap-around
region is expected to clip at least the northwest half of the MKX
forecast area as the low tracks across central WI on Friday while
weakening. Temperatures should be warm enough so that we just see
rain showers with this wrap-around, but there is a small chance
for snow to mix in for a short period of time. Low temperatures
Friday night will dip to around freezing.

Saturday through Monday... Forecast Confidence is Low.

A low pressure system will track from the Southern Plains through
Ohio over the weekend. The north edge of this system may clip
southern WI. Models trended farther north with this system
compared to yesterday. If it clips us, we have a chance for some
wet snow or a rain/snow mix Saturday night into Sunday morning and
then rain Sunday late morning through the afternoon.

The ECWMF is showing the upper low over the south phasing with a
northern stream low which would bring a better potential for snow
to portions of south central and central WI.

Tuesday and Beyond...

It looks like warmer temperatures will return to southern WI
toward the middle of next week, although this would come with an
active weather pattern.

AVIATION(21Z TAF Update)...

Gusty west northwest winds will linger late this afternoon,
before shifting north into early evening, as a cold front moves
south/southeast through the area. The gusty north winds should
linger for a time tonight as well. Diurnal cumulus will linger
into early evening, with more clouds moving southeast into the
area. A few showers may affect eastern parts of the area,
especially toward the Sheboygan area, later this afternoon.

Winds will gradually shift northeast by later tonight, and east on
Wednesday. They will become gusty during the late morning and
afternoon.

Area of a rain/snow mix should move northeast into the area
Wednesday morning, remaining a rain/snow mix into the afternoon.
Any snow will be of the wet variety, and is more likely to
accumulate on grassy areas than the warmer pavement and runways.
Uncertainty exists here with how this will play out with amounts,
so keep up with the forecast. At this time, 1 to 3 inches may
occur, highest in northern parts of the area, but this could
change. Rates may be in the 1/4 inch per hour range.

Ceilings and visibilities should drop in to the MVFR category with
the onset of the precipitation, and should drop to IFR category or
lower Wednesday afternoon and night.

MARINE...

Nearshore Waters...

Gusty west northwest winds, with gusts to around 25 knots near
the shore, are expected until a cold front moves quickly
southward across the waters later this afternoon and early this
evening. Gusty north winds are expected immediately behind it.
Some gusts to 25 knots are expected for a time after the front
moves through. Waves will increase to 3 to 5 feet tonight, before
subsiding Wednesday morning. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect
until 14Z Wednesday.

Gusty east winds are then expected late Wednesday into Thursday,
with gale force gusts possible during this period. Waves are
expected to build during this time. A Gale Watch is in effect for
Wednesday night into Thursday.

The winds will then gradually veer southeast to southwest
Thursday night into Friday morning, remaining gusty into Friday
night and Saturday morning. A Small Craft Advisory will likely be
needed Thursday night into Saturday morning.

Open Waters...

Gusty west northwest winds are anticipated near the shoreline
until a cold front moves southward across the lake late this
afternoon and evening. Gusty north winds immediately behind the
front are expected, some gusting to 25 knots at times.

Gusty east to northeast winds are expected to gradually develop
later Wednesday, becoming east Wednesday night into Thursday
morning. Gale force gusts are possible Wednesday night into
Thursday across the open waters. This will lead to building wave
heights as well. A Gale Watch is in effect Wednesday night into
Thursday.

These gusty winds will gradually veer southeast to southwest from
Thursday afternoon into Friday, from south to north across Lake
Michigan. They will then veer west Friday night into Saturday,
remaining gusty.

Accumulating snow is possible Wednesday into early Thursday as a
strong spring storm system moves into the region. At this time,
the best potential for accumulation is along and north of the
interstate 94 corridor. Stay tuned to updated forecasts for
potential impacts to area roads for the Wednesday afternoon and
Thursday morning commutes.

A few thunderstorms are possible Thursday into Thursday evening.

Northwest wind gusts up to 30 knots are expected through late
evening. Winds will shift to the north overnight and build high
waves over the nearshore waters. A Small Craft Advisory is in
effect.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Wednesday through Tuesday

A powerful spring storm system will track from Kansas to central
Lake Michigan Wednesday night through Thursday night. Expect
rapidly increasing easterly winds Wednesday afternoon. Gale force
wind gusts are likely Wednesday evening through Thursday evening.

A few thunderstorms are possible Thursday afternoon and evening.

A powerful spring storm system will track from Kansas to central
Lake Michigan Wednesday night through Thursday night. Expect
rapidly increasing easterly winds Wednesday afternoon. The winds
will then shift to the west on Friday as the low passes by. Gale
force gusts are likely Wednesday evening through Thursday evening.

A few thunderstorms are possible Thursday afternoon and evening.
