This Gale Warning is in effect from noon Tuesday to 3 AM CST Wednesday. The Small Craft Advisory is now in effect until noon CST Tuesday. * WINDS: North to northwest winds to 30 knots this evening and tonight, becoming west to 30 knots Tuesday morning. Winds then increase to gales to 35 knots Tuesday afternoon. * WAVES: 3 to 5 feet tonight in ice free areas. Waves 2 to 4 feet Tuesday, then 1 to 2 feet Tuesday night into Thursday. * FREEZING SPRAY: Gusty winds and very cold temperatures will result in a risk for heavy freezing spray. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A Small Craft Advisory means that wind speeds of 21 to 33 knots are expected to produce hazardous wave conditions to small craft. Light to moderate snow continues across the area, especially east
of I-90. Snow has increased in intensity in some areas as the mid
level wave begins to move through, especially along and north of
I-43. An additional 1-3 inches of snow is expected across much of
this area, with slightly higher amounts across Sheboygan and
Ozaukee Counties, where lake enhancement will increase as the
afternoon wears on. Winds will also be on the increase as the
surface low begins to lift into Michigan, which will result in
some blowing and drifting of snow.
Still coordinating exact details with neighboring offices, but
would anticipate being able to start trimming the Winter Storm
Warning from the west this afternoon.

.AVIATION(18Z TAFS)...
IFR visibility will continue this afternoon within areas of snow.
Ceilings will gradually improve to MVFR, and eventually VFR
tonight. Snow should mostly come to an end later this afternoon,
though will linger into the early evening for MKE and ENW due to
lake enhancement.
Winds will become increasingly gusty this afternoon as they
transition to north and then northwest. Gusty west to northwest
winds will prevail from late tonight through tomorrow.

UPDATE...
Mid level dry air has over performed a bit, which has cut down
somewhat on snow amounts and certainly rates during this early
morning period. In addition, some freezing drizzle has developed
where cloud ice has been lost. This has been most widespread along
and south of I-94 between Milwaukee and Madison.
All that said, however, we are not yet done with the snow. An
additional area of snow associated with the 700 MB low center is
currently between Madison and La Crosse, and will continue to
move east into the area later this morning. As the center of the
surface low pivots form northern Illinois into lower Michigan,
expect to see that area of snow swing across the area during the
late morning and afternoon hours. Additional snow will range from
3 to 5 inches northeast of a line from Baraboo to Madison to
Burlington. Amounts will be highest across Sheboygan, Ozaukee and
Washington Counties, where some lake enhancement is expected later
this afternoon once colder 850 MB temps start to build into the
area, and lake to 850 delta Ts increase into the 15-18 degree
range.
MARINE...
Gales will remain possible today and this evening across the lake
as strong low pressure lifts from northern Illinois into the
vicinity of Lake Huron. Winds will initially be from the east this
morning and early afternoon, becoming more northerly with time as
the low pressure moves further into Michigan.
Gusty winds are then expected for most of the remainder of the
week, along with a significant risk of heavy freezing spray. Gales
will be possible at times through the week over the open waters.
For the nearshore, Small Craft Advisories will likely be needed.
AVIATION(12Z TAFS)...
Moderate to heavy snow will move east of the eastern terminals in
the next hour or two. 1 to 2 inch per hour snowfall rates and 1/2
to 1/4 mile visibility values are expected before this moves out.
Ceilings should be IFR, then improve to MVFR in the lighter snow.
Gusty east winds are contributing to blowing and drifting snow
across the area, and will continue through the day into tonight.
There looks to be a period of light snow lingering this morning,
with more light to moderate snow moving into the area from the
northwest this morning into early this afternoon. The snow should
end from west to east this afternoon into early evening. May see
visibility values down to 1 mile with ceilings around 1500 feet or
so with the light snow. Snowfall rates of 1/4 inch per hour are
anticipated, with 1/2 inch per hour or more in any more moderate
snow bands.
Some areas southwest of Madison may not see much more snowfall
today. Some uncertainty with how things will play out today with
the snow.

SHORT TERM...
Today...Forecast Confidence Is Medium.
Winter Storm Warning continues through today across the area. Big
impacts to the morning commute are expected.
Band of moderate to heavy snow will continue to move east across
the area early this morning. This is in conjunction with the low
level jet nose and focused warm air advection/strong low level
frontogenesis response. There may be 1 to 2 inch per hour snowfall
rates with this band of moderate to heavy snow.
Blowing snow is also expected to develop, with near blizzard
conditions possible near Lake Michigan. No Blizzard Warning will
be issued, as 35 MPH gusts and 1/4 mile visibilities should not
reach the 3 hour or greater criteria in this area, with winds
ramping down as the low approaches the area.
One major issue with the snowfall forecast is the dry slot that is
working into areas southwest of Madison. Mesoscale models bring
this feature east across the area, shunting the moderate to heavy
snow to the east of the area by 12Z to 13Z this morning. Would
expect the focused warm air advection/low level frontogenesis
response to generate light snow with blowing snow for this morning
into the afternoon, before tapering off from west to east. In
addition, lake enhancement should help keep the snow going near
Lake Michigan, especially north of Milwaukee.
It appears that the best accumulations will be in the northern
parts of the area. The southern and southwestern parts of the area
may not see much more snow once the dry slot moves in during the
morning. Will have to wait and see if there is any new snow
development with the passing 850 mb low/frontogenesis. Adjusted
snow totals downward somewhat in the far south and southwest
areas.
Tonight Through Friday...Forecast Confidence Is High.
Strong cold air advection is expected tonight into Tuesday night,
as an extremely cold airmass moves into the region. This bitter
cold airmass should linger into Thursday. Still have high
confidence for bitter cold temperatures and wind chills for this
period. This may end up being one of the coldest stretch of
temperatures and wind chills we have ever seen.
Lows tonight of single digits below zero will fall to the 20
below to 28 below zero range Tuesday night, and 20 below to 32
below zero Wednesday night, before rising to the single digits
again Thursday night. Record lows may be reached Tuesday night and
Wednesday night. Highs Wednesday will only reach the 10 below to
16 below zero range, which is near record low maximum
temperatures.
Wind chills of 20 to 33 below zero are expected tonight, and a
Wind Chill Advisory will be needed once the winter storm ends.
Wind chills should plummet to 45 below to 55 below zero Tuesday
night into Wednesday morning, and 40 below to 50 below zero
Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Wind chills will only rise
to 35 to 45 below zero Wednesday. Thus, a Wind Chill Watch and
eventually a Warning will be needed for Tuesday night into
Thursday morning.
