.DISCUSSION...Current observations showing fog and low stratus in
many of the valleys west of the Cascades in southern Oregon and
northern California. Most of our area is under the influence of
mostly clear skies. The fog/stratus will continue to break up
through the afternoon, and temperatures will be a bit warmer today
than yesterday.
The big forecast challenge of today will be continuing to nail
down all the details of the incoming storms, including the low
elevation snow possibility on Monday. For more information on

DISCUSSION...Confidence is increasing that we will see a
substantial winter storm drop southward along the PacNW coast
Sunday night into Monday bringing the lowest snow levels of the
season so far with accumulating snow likely in the valleys west of
the Cascades and possibly even at some of the beaches Monday
morning. More on this later.
In the near term, high pressure will provide one last day of dry,
mild spring- like weather today. Dense fog developed again
overnight in the Umpqua Valley, the Illinois Valley and portions
of the Rogue Valley, especially NW of Medford. As a result, we
issued a dense fog advisory through 10 am this morning. The
thickest fog is along Interstate 5 from Drain southward to Grants
Pass and Rogue River and also along highway 199 from Grants Pass
south to Obrien. It'll lift and should dissipate late this morning
or early this afternoon. Another mild afternoon is expected in
Medford, since any fog this morning should be patchy/short-lived.
Overall, highs will largely range from 50 to 60 degrees.
Meanwhile, a frontal system offshore will approach the coast
tonight with increasing cloudiness. This system arrives Friday and
will mark the beginning of a period of active weather that will
last through this weekend into early next week. Some rain will
arrive at the coast late tonight, then spread inland across most
of the forecast area Friday. This system is expected to have the
biggest impact over northern California as low pressure develops
offshore Friday night and slowly meanders toward the northern
California coast Saturday before moving inland near or just south
of Cape Mendocino Saturday night. A period of gusty southerly
winds can be expected in advance of the frontal system tonight
through Friday night, especially in the Shasta Valley and over
portions of the East Side, where we have issued wind advisories.
Some sub-advisory southerly breezes will also be felt elsewhere,
including the southern end of the Rogue Valley. Precipitation
amounts for this system look modest across southern Oregon, but
will be heavier in the favored upslope areas of Siskiyou County,
including the Shasta Region. Snow levels initially will be high,
up around 6000 feet, but will lower to 5000 feet Friday night and
then to 4000 feet on Saturday. We have a winter storm watch out
for elevations above 5000 feet in the Shasta Region where 12 to 18
inches could accumulate. Additional advisories may be necessary
for lower elevations as the snow level drops. Overall, through
Sunday amounts of 5 to 10 inches will be common in the Oregon
Cascades.
Late Sunday and Sunday night, energy in the form of a very cold
closed low with modified arctic air will dig southward from
western Canada just offshore, then move onshore into Oregon
Monday morning. Models have been showing this scenario, to varying
degrees over the past few days, but have come more in line over
the past few runs. Model 850mb temps plunge to -6 to -8C
everywhere west of the Cascades and this will induce snow levels
to drop dramatically from ~3000 feet Sunday afternoon to 500 feet
and maybe even near some beaches by Monday morning. Snow will
accumulate at the passes north of Medford and will also likely
bring some accumulation to many west side valleys with preliminary
amounts of 1 to 4 inches. Even the coast could see some
accumulation Monday morning. Of course, we'll be ironing out the
details in the shifts ahead, so stay tuned for updates/adjustments
to the forecast. However, everyone should be getting prepared for
a return of hazardous winter weather early next week. Be on the
lookout for any watches/warnings/advisories.
Beyond Monday, model differences are substantial but the weather
is likely to be less impactful with the possibility of warming
and drying into mid-week, or additional lighter snow flurries
above around 3000 feet. -Spilde
AVIATION...For the 31/12Z TAFs...Areas of LIFR/IFR cigs/vsbys in
low clouds and fog over the west side valleys, the coast, and the
coastal waters will clear to VFR mid-morning to early afternoon
Thursday. There may be sufficient cloud cover to prevent a
recurrence of the lower conditions Thursday night. Over the
remainder of the area, VFR conditions will prevail through
Thursday evening. An incoming front will bring rain with lowering
ceilings late Thursday night into Friday. -Spilde

confidence on small craft advisory south winds and steep seas
developing late Friday night across the waters and easing below
criteria by early Friday evening. This will combine with building
long-period swell to create hazardous bar conditions into Saturday.
The swell will peak at 11 feet at 19 seconds Friday evening. Low
pressure moves onshore to the south Saturday producing increasing
north wind. Then, another cold front arrives front Sunday allowing
