.DISCUSSION...No updates needed this morning. An upper ridge will
build over our area today and reach its peak in strength late
tomorrow before starting to move north of us Wednesday. This will
bring the hottest weather of the year by far to northern
California and southwest Oregon. High temperatures will be near
records, but the current forecast does not have any actual record
breaking temperatures. The forecast of 105 in Medford for
Tuesday would be near the record of 106 set in 1972. Records or
not, it's going to be very hot tomorrow through Wednesday.
The much bigger concern, however, is the potential for
thunderstorms on Wednesday. The remnants of tropical storm Ivo is
currently off southern California and moving our way. It will
bring a big surge in moisture (the fuel for thunderstorms), and
this coupled with the current heat wave is a big concern for fire
weather. Also of note this morning is that the remnants of Ivo is
currently producing lightning over the water which is, no pun
intended, a big red flag for us, because if it can produce
lightning over the water with no surface heat contribution, it
will only be more energetic when it encounters the heating from
land as it moves over us. We plan to upgrade much of the current
fire weather watches to red flag warnings today. The only question
mark remains on the west side where thunderstorm potential is
slightly less certain than other places, but we will consider that

.PREV DISCUSSION... /Issued 526 AM PDT Mon Aug 26 2019/
DISCUSSION...The two main changes to the forecast are increased
confidence in the development of thunderstorms over portions of
our area on Wednesday and Thursday, and increased confidence in
the forecast of hot temperatures through the week.
This includes near record to record heat on Tuesday and
Wednesday, which has led to an upgrade of the Excessive Heat Watch
to a Heat Advisory in Douglas County and an Excessive Heat
Warning in Josephine, Jackson, and Siskiyou Counties. Tuesday
still looks to be a slightly hotter day than Wednesday with west
side valley highs around 100 to 110 (hottest in the Lower Klamath
River Valley of western Siskiyou County) while valleys east of the
Cascades should see highs in the 90s.
Besides a shift in the pattern, a hindrance to heating on Wednesday
will be an increase of mid and upper level clouds associated with
the remnants of Tropical Storm Ivo. The embedded shortwave
trigger, influx of moisture, and unusual heat will produce a
slight chance to chance of thunderstorms over a large portion of
our area from late Wednesday morning through the evening. The risk
will extend eastward from the Coast Range across northern
California and southern Oregon. The probability now looks to be
highest from the southern Oregon Cascades across the northern
portions of Klamath and Lake Counties. The steering winds during
the day are likely to veer slightly from south-southwest to
southwest at 10 to 20 mph.
There will be a push of moist marine air to the coast on Wednesday
night along with the arrival of the main portion of the trough.
This may produce a few coastal showers into Thursday morning,
as well as begin a period of thicker/longer lasting mainly night
and morning coastal low clouds for the remainder of the week.
The trough will track northeastward across our area on Thursday.
There will be a slight chance of late day thunderstorms in the
vicinity of the trough, over the northern half of Klamath and Lake
Counties and northeastward into central Oregon.
Forecast confidence remains high for the start of the holiday
weekend with a stable air mass and slight cooling for Friday and
Saturday. Our region will be between a ridge over the Desert
Southwest and the next broad trough over the Gulf of Alaska. The
rest of the weekend forecast will largely depend upon the strength
and track of this next trough. At least a modest cooling trend is
likely early next week with the trough likely to move at least
toward and possibly into our area. There is also a high
probability of at least night and morning coastal low clouds. Less
certain is whether there will be any risk of showers or
thunderstorms in our area.
.AVIATION...For the 26/18Z TAFs...A dry, hot air mass is
developing over the forecast area. VFR conditions will continue for
inland TAF sites for the next 24 hours. Local IFR/LIFR cigs and
MVFR/IFR visibilities may develop along the coast late tonight. Keene
MARINE...Updated 200 AM PDT Monday, 26 August 2019...A strong
thermal trough persists along the coast and will bring continued
strong gusty north winds and steep to very steep, hazardous seas
through this evening. Strongest winds and steepest seas are expected
from near Bandon southward. Winds will gradually decrease late
tonight into Tuesday morning. However, steep, fresh swell will
maintain Small Craft Advisory conditions at most locations beyond 5
NM from shore and near Cape Blanco.
Models indicate that the thermal trough pattern continues to weaken
Tuesday night, with winds switching to southerly and areas of fog
and low stratus developing along the coast. Lighter seas are
expected as well Tuesday night and Wednesday. -CC
FIRE WEATHER...Updated 200 PM PDT Sunday 25 August 2019...It will
remain dry through at least next Tuesday. The main concern ahead is
the potential for thunderstorms from late Wednesday morning through
Wednesday evening. Details on this follow below.
The general consensus shows there is the potential for thunderstorms
Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday evening. The ECMWF and GFS show a
shortwave moving up from the south and tapping into moisture from
tropical storm Ivo during max heating Wednesday afternoon. All the
necessary ingredients (trigger, moisture and instability) are
present for at least a slight chance of thunderstorms Wednesday
afternoon and evening. Right now, we think the best case scenario
will be isolated thunderstorms. Worst case will be scattered
thunderstorms. Additionally this will follow a few days of hot
weather (Monday-Wednesday) and low relative humidity. A look st
some of the soundings also suggest thunderstorms could produce
little or no rainfall, but the details on the specifics on this
could change. Also the track of the shortwave is one that is
favorable for thunderstorms west of the Cascades and close to the
coast. Right now, there is no mention of thunderstorms near and at
the coast in forecast, but this will be something that we'll have to
watch closely. The models show stronger winds aloft, so the other
concern will be gusty and erratic winds near thunderstorms. Because
of the above mentioned reasoning and moderate confidence there will
be at least isolated thunderstorms, a Fire Weather Watch has been
issued. Details can be found at RFWMFR.
In the meantime, there are two main short term concerns. First will
be gusty winds east of the Cascades this afternoon and evening with
low relative humidity. Second is breezy winds with moderate to
locally poor overnight recoveries near and at the ridges in fire
weather zones 618, 619 and 620 tonight and Monday night. No critical
fire concerns are expected in these areas, therefore we'll just
highlight it in the fire weather forecast. Winds will be weaker
Tuesday night, but it will be unusually dry again.
The hottest temperatures will be on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
with triple digit readings likely for interior westside valleys
Tuesday and Wednesday. The wildcard for Wednesday will be cloud
cover which could result in afternoon temperatures a few degrees
lower than what's in the forecast.
Another weak shortwave will be on the heals of first one Thursday,
but the track is further north and east with the best chance for
thunderstorms east of the Cascades in Oregon. -Petrucelli
