.SHORT TERM...Snow has diminished to just a few flurries on the east
side with the rest of us seeing mostly cloudy skies. The sun has
popped out at times, and with valley temperatures in the mid to
upper 30s, the snow has been able to melt from a lot of areas.
Conditions area-wide should remain similar to what we've got now
through the evening.
The next storm system is moving steadily down the B.C. coast this
afternoon, and precipitation is already breaking out along the
Washington coast. This precipitation will spread into our area from
the north late this evening and continue into Monday. As this is a
warm front, there will be warm air advection with this system, so
snow levels will generally rise, but the question is how fast? The
snow that fell in the west side valleys complicates matters quite a
bit, since this snow will tend to keep the air cooler in valleys
than would otherwise be the case. At the same time, west-southwest
winds will be developing ahead of this system tonight, and this will
promote the mixing out of this cool air and also inhibit
precipitation in the valleys due to downsloping. That said, if the
air cools enough in the valleys, the winds could go right over the
top and negate any downsloping.
Obviously, there are a lot of competing factors tonight, but we've
struck a balance between all of this, and that is to keep the winter
weather advisory we have above 1500 feet, and also force light snow
down into the west side valleys overnight. There are valleys that
tend to be very resistant to warming up once they've got snow in
them, namely: the Evans and Illinois Valleys. It is possible they
could see more snow than we're currently forecasting, but confidence
is low, so we'll just have to watch to see how it develops tonight.
By tomorrow afternoon, we do think there will be enough wind to mix
the valleys out and allow snow levels to finally rise and put an end
to the low level snow threat for the time being.
The warm front moves east of us later Monday, then we're in between
that front and the next cold front moving toward the coast. This
squeeze play should keep precipitation going over our area through
Monday night with the exception of the interior valleys and east
side which will be subject to continued downsloping. However, the
main front (and most of the precipitation) stalls offshore Tuesday
as an upper trough digs out around 130W. As a result, precipitation
will at least lighten up or perhaps stop altogether Tuesday - at
least according to the operational models. The ensemble guidance
shows considerably more precipitation over us Tuesday. We've trended
toward the drier models as a compromise.
As a result of lower precipitation amounts, snow in the Cascades
does not look as heavy through Tuesday morning as previously
thought. We've got a total of around 24 inches in the high Cascades
through Tuesday morning, which sounds like a lot, but over a 48 hour
period should be manageable. Snow totals over passes such as Lake of
the Woods, Siskiyou Summit, and the Mt. Shasta area are much lighter
in the same time period (maybe up to 8 inches altogether). Given all
this, we'll be issuing a winter weather advisory for the appropriate
areas through Tuesday morning. This will set the stage for what will
likely be a very snowy mid week period in all of our mountain
locations and very wet weather over the lower elevations. Winter
storm watched have been issued for the mountains Tuesday afternoon
through Wednesday afternoon, and those will be described in the
extended forecast discussion below. -Wright

the area between systems and VFR conditions prevail with areas of
obscured higher terrain. The next front will bring lowering
conditions tonight with widespread obscuration of higher terrain.
Areas of MVFR cigs/vsbys in rain, low clouds, and fog will develop
tonight at lower elevations. Above the snow level, areas of IFR
cigs/vsbys in low clouds and snow will develop tonight. Snow levels
along the coast and over the coastal waters will rising from 1500
feet up to around 3000 feet late tonight, then higher Monday. Snow
levels inland will rise from around 1000 feet to 1500 feet late
tonight, but lower in some valleys where cold air will be trapped.
Snow levels will then rise to 2000 to 3500 feet Monday afternoon
with the higher levels over the west side.
