.SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday night...A frontal system
will bring active weather to the forecast area through Saturday at
least...and perhaps through Sunday. Moderate to strong winds,
mountain snowfall, and moderate to heavy lower elevation rainfall
will accompany this front. These elements are detailed below.
...SNOW...Some light snow associated with weakening low pressure
has been observed on webcams over portions of Northern California
and the Southern Oregon Cascades. Precipitation will increase over
the area tonight into Thursday as a warm front begins to move
northward. Snow levels will start out around 4000 feet as warm
frontal precipitation arrives, and this will bring a round of snow
to Siskiyou Summit on Interstate 5 and Klamath Falls. The
majority of guidance shows snow levels rising some in the mid
morning hours, so only several inches of snow are expected at
Siskiyou Summit and Klamath Falls. We've left those areas out of
the Winter Weather Advisory. Higher elevation areas, to include
Snowmans Summit on Highway 89...the Southern Oregon Cascades, and
Highway 97 north of Klamath Falls will see snow for a longer
period of time, and we continue to advertise this with a Winter
Weather Advisory. Precipitation diminishes and snow levels rise in
the afternoon, so our Advisory ends at 3pm Thursday. Before that,
there will be travel impacts to the passes, Highway 97, and
portions of Highway 140 east of Klamath Falls.
There will be a distinct break in snow impacts from Thursday night
through Friday night as the frontal boundary remains mainly
offshore. Snow returns to the forecast area Saturday as the frontal
boundary swings inland. Confidence in timing for snowfall is low at
this time based on some timing differences between model solutions.
It's likely that we'll see at least another 6 inches of snow in the
mountains above 4500 feet as the front pushes through on Saturday.
Some model data show Mt Shasta City receiving significant snowfall
Saturday, and we'll be monitoring that for potential hazard
issuances.
...RAIN...Confidence has grown over the past 24 hours in the
expected evolution of the heaviest precipitation with the frontal
system. In short, moderate to heavy rainfall will impact lower
elevation areas (heaviest coast and Western Siskiyou County) with
the warm front tonight and Thursday. Then, there will be a break
in heavy rainfall Friday (some rainfall continuing in
upslope/terrain areas like Coast Range and Mt Shasta area). Then
the front will move back in Saturday and bring a period of
moderate to heavy rainfall (heaviest Curry County coast and nearby
mountains). Operational model and ensemble trends have given us
higher confidence in the break in precipitation on Friday, so we
have better confidence now that we won't have major flooding
impacts from this front. We'll of course have to keep an eye on
the Atmospheric River (AR) placement by future models because a
shift southward of 100 miles would make a big difference in our
forecast and expected impacts. For now, this AR should be mostly
beneficial (rainfall in a relatively dry water year thus far...and
building snowpack) with some hazards such as ponding of water on
roadways and rising creeks/streams. Keene
...WIND...Strong winds will probably hit the coast late Thursday
night through most of Friday. The orientation of the winds hitting
the coast Thursday night is more south westerly, so this should
allow for many locations along our coast to see strong winds and
wind gusts around 55 mph to 60 mph Thursday night. As the event
drags on into Friday, winds near the surface and aloft will turn
more southerly as a cold front pushes towards the coast. As a
result, most locations south of Cape Blanco will still see strong
winds through Friday night, yet areas north of Cape Blanco won't
feel as strong of winds.
The coast won't be the only location that will see strong winds. Our
typical impacted areas east of the Cascades will likely see breezy
conditions for most of this event. Summer Lake will be pretty close
to hitting wind advisory conditions Saturday morning. Most of the
models are showing 65 knot 700 mb winds over that location. In
addition, the Shasta Valley will likely see stronger winds from
Friday into Saturday. We are not excited about the Rogue Valley
seeing the strong winds because we need more of southeast component
to get the winds down in Medford. Ashland could very well see
breezy conditions for most of the event, Thursday night through
most of Friday.
Overall, the impacts for these strong winds will be difficult
driving conditions for large profile vehicles in addition to the
potential for some downed trees along the coast. Lastly, holiday
decorations may be disturbed if one is living on the coast.

.LONG TERM...Sunday through Tuesday...A low pressure system
will approach the region from the southwest on Sunday while inland,
a front remains over central or eastern portions of the CWA.
Precipitation may increase along the front as the disturbance
moves inland from the southwest. Although there is variability on
where the front will linger on Sunday, overall expect light to
moderate precipitation likely across much of the area Sunday.
Snow levels are expected near 4000 feet Sunday so some snow
accumulations are possible across higher passes. Sunday night, as
the disturbance gradually moves east and an upper trough remains in
place, showers may linger across inland areas. Meanwhile at the
coast, another disturbance may move just off the coast from north to
south with continued chances for showers across coastal areas as
well.
An upper trough is forecast to remain over the area Monday. As the
upper trough is in place on Monday some continued light showers are
possible. Given the colder air mass, snow levels down to lower
passes are possible. However, models are in good agreement
indicating any showers would have only very light precipitation
amounts.
Monday night into Tuesday, a broad upper trough will remain with
main energy associated with earlier shortwave trough south to
southeast of the CWA. As a result, expect a cold pattern with only
weak chances for any precipitation. Temperatures may drop to
freezing or below in western valleys on Tuesday morning if there is
a break between weather systems and decreased cloud cover. Model
and ensemble solutions then indicate another low will approach the
region Tuesday night. Model variability increases Tuesday night into
Wednesday with low confidence in the track and strength of this low.
There is a range of possible solutions includes that the low may
track south along the coast before shifting inland south of the area
or the low may move inland over the area on Christmas Day with a
mix of light to moderate of rain and snow. Confidence is low on the
forecast details for the Christmas day period and we will continue
to monitor and update as confidence increases. -CC

for areas of MVFR cigs, particularly in the Mt. Shasta region.
Ceilings will lower late this afternoon and this evening with

Friday into Saturday morning. Due to the long duration of gale force
winds, seas will become fully arisen. The very high and very steep
southerly wind waves combined with high and steep northwest swell
will likely result in particularly hazardous seas reaching peak
heights in the 20-25 foot range late Thursday night through Friday.
Mariners should consider altering their plans or remain in port
until this long-lived storm passes. Conditions will begin to improve
Saturday. After a few days of relatively calm conditions early next
